I Specification of Letters Patent.
TELESCOPIC PICTURE-FRAME.
PatentedAug. so, 1921.
Application filed March 24, 1921. Serial No. 455,056.
To all whom-it may concern: f
Be it known that we, Trmonon KoZLow- SKY and Noaomori Roeosnr, citizens of P0- land, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented cer-' tain new and useful Improvements in Telescopic Picture-Frames, of wh1ch the following is a specification. This invention relates to picture frames adapted to hold photographs, plctures, dising-"description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in Which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth. 7
Figure 1 of the drawings is a rear elevation of a picture frame constructed according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. v
Fig. 1 is a fragmentaryplan view, with the resilient contraction element removed, showing the means for connecting the telescopic sections to one another.
In constructing our improved picture frame we divide the members thereof so of the frame. The angle pieces extending along the ends of the frame connect directly to one another while on the sides of the frame they connect to intermediate side frame members 11.
Each of these angle pieces 10 and side frame members 11 is preferably of channel cross section with the legs extending rearwardly and the bottom of the channel forming the front of the frame. along the 1nner side of each of the angle {PATENT OFFICE.
Extending pieces 10 andmembers 11, in alinement with the bottom elements of the channels, are the inwardly projecting flanges 12 which jointly form a supporting ledge for the photograph or picture.
The angle pieces 10 and members llare joined to form the frame as follows: On the sides of the frame the members 11 are of, slightly greater depth from front torear than the adjacent legs of the angle pieces 10 so that their front faces are offset-for-- wardly from the front faces of the angle pieces. These front faces of which the flanges 12 form a part are extended as at 13 beyond the legs of the channeled angle pieces to overlap the front faces of the angle pieces,.while the bottom elements of the latter have tongue-like extensions 14 which project between the legs of the said members 11. These tongues 14 1 are longitudinally slotted as at 15 and headed rivets 16 are fixed in-the extended parts of the members l1 and pass through these slots. Relative longitudinal movement of the frame members is thus permitted. At the ends of the frame the same arrangement is followed, one of the angle pieces having its front wall extended to overlap the front wall of the other as at 18, the other having a tongue 19 slotted as at 20 to receive headed rivets 21 fixed in the extension 18.
To draw the frame together we provide resilient means comprising a series of cylinders 25 secured at one end to the required angle pieces and each'having a coiled ex-' pansion spring 26 therein which bears against a piston 27 on a rod 28, the projecting ends of these rods 28 being fixed to com tiguous angle pieces or side frame members which are shown as provided with cross elements 29 to which the endsof the rods may be secured by bolts 30. We also provide a similar arrangement extending transversely of the frame between the side members 11.
To form a back support for the picture we provide a series of fiat springs 31 some of which may be fastened to the anglepieces 10 and some to the cylinder and rod of the intermediate contraction device and which are adapted to bear against the picture and press the same outwardly against the flange 12.
In the use of the device the frame is first expanded until the flange 12 can clear the edges of the picture, thelatter is then inserted from the front until it is bearing on the springs 31 and has moved rearwardly past said flange. The frame is then allowed to contract under the influence of springs 26, holding the picture securely in place.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A picture frame having a series of telescopic frame members, and resilient means acting to contract said frame members, said. means comprising cylinders fixed to certain of said frame members, pistons in said cylinders, springs in said cylinders bearing on said pistons, and piston rods fixed to other of said frame members.
2. A picture frame comprising angle pieces and side frame members, said angle pieces having telescopic connection with each other at the ends of the frame and with said side frame members at the sides of the frame, resilient means acting transversely and longitudinally of the frame to contract the same.
3. A picture frame comprising angle pieces and side frame members, said angle pieces having telescopic connection with each other at the ends of the frame and with said side frame members at the sides of the frame, resilient means acting transversely and longitudinally of the frame to contract the same, said means including a device extending transversely of the frame intermediate its with the webs of the channels forming the front of the frame, being extended on their inner sides to form an inwardly projecting flange, said webs being longitudinally extended beyond the main bodies of the memhere to overlap one another, and means con- 7 necting said overlapping elements together to permit of relative sliding movement.
5. A picture frame comprising a series of telescopic members, said members being of channel cross section with the bottom element of the channel forming the front of the frame, and inwardly projecting flanges on said members flush with the bottom element of the channel and spring elements located in the channelsof the said members for contracting the same.
7 6. A picture frame comprising a series of telescopic members, said members being of channel cross section with the bottom element of the channel forming the front of the frame, and inwardly projecting flanges on 7 said members flush with the bottom element THEODOR KOZLOWSKY. WOJCIEGH i noeosKY.
