COMBINED BRUSH AND COMB;
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that W6,- THEODOR KozLows Y and Wo orncH RoGosKY, citizensof Poland, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and StatejofOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Brushes and Combs, of which the following is a specification. 7
This invention relates to hair dressing articles generally, having particular reference to a device in whicha comb and brush are combined in a single unitary structure.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel means for. mounting a comb and brush in a single structure whereby the comb and brush can be more readily alternated in use. j i
Y A further object is to provide a device in which the comb may be carried within the brushq backing when not in use and have its teeth readily projected from the latter for use, and also to provide for the automatic cleaning of the teeth of the comb as the same is withdrawn into the brush back.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the .invention are may have a mirror 11 mounted thereon.
Within the back 10, on the rear side thereof, is formed a recess 13, which extends the major portion of the area of the back and is covered by a plate 14: secured in place by screws 15.
This recess is adapted to accommodate a comb 16, which is in the main of ordinary construction, and is adapted to project from one side of the recess 13. Formed on opposite ends of this comb, at the back edge thereof,-are a pair of lugs 17 which project transversely into a pair of transverse grooves 18 V in the bottom wallof the recess 13 and serve as guides to prevent angular displacement of the comb.
I Specification of Letters Patent." PatentedAug. 30, 1921 Application filedfilllarchfi t, .1921; Serial No 455,055.. C a
The'comb 16 is held in the projected'p'ositlon shown, by an abutment element comprising a segmental arm 20 fulcrumed as at 21 on a suitable stud in the brush back 10 and having a series of fingers 21, 22, 23 of'differcut radial lengths, these, fingers being adapted to be engaged in a notch 2&in the back of. the comb'16, this notch 24 and the fulcrum point 21 of the arm having a relative position in the line of movement of the comb so as to prevent any turning moment on the arm 20 due to back thrust of the comb. The arm 20 may have a handle extension 25 which projects from the recess 13. oppositely to the comb 16.
The comb 16 is moved back'into the recess '13 whenthearm 20 is swung to one side by comb 16 under the influence of the springs 27 may be limited by a pair of shoulders 10 formed on the brush back 10. l
The teeth of the comb 16 project between a series of projections 30 extending along the slde of the recess 13, these projections having a snug fit with the teeth, and having sharp outer corners which, by rubbing along the teeth, act to clean the latter as the comb moves intothe recess 13.
It is believed that the manner of operation of our improved device will be readily understood from the foregoing description. Nor mally the comb is concealed in the brush back while only the tip of handle 25 projects.
When the handle is swung to one side the fingers 21, 22, 23 act on the back of the comb with a cam action and move it to the projected position. Either of these fingers may be engaged in the notch 241 according to the distance it may be desired to project the teeth of the comb. I
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent of the United States is as follows 1. A device of the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a comb slidable in said recess, a spring normally urging said comb into said recess, and means locking said comb in position with its teeth projected from said recess,
said means including an abutment arm pivoted to said back and adapted to be engaged by the rear edge of the comb.
2. A device of the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a comb slidable in said recess, a
tion With its teeth projected from said recess,
said means including an abutment arm pivoted to said back, and having a series of circumferentially spaced abutment fingers of different radial lengths any one of Which is adapted to be brought into operative engagement with the rear edge of the comb, for the purpose specified.
3. A device of the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a comb slidable in said recess, lugs on said comb engaging grooves in the bottom Wall of said recess to guide said comb, and means on said back engaging the teeth of the comb and acting both to clean said teeth'during inward movement of the comb, and to cooperate with said lugs in guiding the comb.
4:. A device of the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a comb slidable in said recess, lugs on said comb engaging groovesin the bottom Wall of said recess to guide said comb, and means on said back engaging the teeth of the comb and acting both to clean said teeth during inward movement of the comb, and to cooperate with said lugs in guiding the comb, a pair of springs located in said grooves and engaging said lugs to urge the comb into said recess, and'a variable abutment to hold said comb with its teeth projected from said recess.
5. A deviceof the class described comprising a brush including a back having a recess therein, a comb slidable in said recess, lugs on said comb engaging grooves in the bottom Wall of said recess to guide said comb, coiled expansion springs located in said grooves and engaging said lugs to urge the comb into the said recess, and means locking said comb in positionwith its teeth projected from said re cess.
6. A device of'the class described compris- 1 ing a brush including a back having a recess therein, 'acomb 'slidable in said recess, lugs on said comb engaging grooves in the bottom Wall of said recess to guide said comb, coiled expansion springs located in said grooves and engaging said lugs to urge the comb into the said recess, and means locking said comb in position With its teeth projected from said recess, said means comprising an abutment arm pivoted to said back, a series of circumferentially spaced abutment fingers of different radial lengths on said arm, and a handle extension on said arm projecting edgewise of the brush back from-the said recess.
' In testimony whereof We have ailixed our signatures.
