UNITED STATES PATENT oFFicE.
RICHARD E. PERKINS, or BOSTON, mnssacnusn'rrs.
RAZOR.
To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, RICHARD E. lnnnms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State this character with novel and improved,
means whereby the cutting blade is caused to vibrate as the device makes a working stroke and wherein the blade isofa double cutting edge type. I
Another object of the invention is to pro ride a. novel and improved device of this general character embodying a cutting blade adapted to reciprocate or vibrate during a shaving stroke and wherein the razor is of a type whereby the same may be manipulated in the same manner as the old fashioned flat blade razor.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the'combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved razor whereby certain improtant advontages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as'will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to dcscribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view partly in top'plan and partly in section illustrating a razor constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention. a
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view partly in front elevation and partly in section of the razor as herein disclosed with the handle fragmentarily shown in full open position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: is a view in end elevation of the device as herein embodied.
Fig. 5 is a view in top plan "of the guard member as herein embodied, theshank car.- ried thereby being shown in fragment.
- with an elongated and relativelybroad opening or slot 3, the central portion of the lonplan of the blade as Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d A 23 1921 Application filed September 4, 1920. Serial No, 408,171.
gitudinal edge of said slot-being provided with the supplemental notch orrecess 4.
One end portion of the member 1 has integrally formed therewith an elongated shank 5 to the outer or free end portion of.
which is pivotally engaged, as. at (i, a bone handle 7 of a well. known type and which,
in the present instance, is employed to facilitate the proper andeasy holding of the dev ce during a shaving operation. As is particularly indicated. in Flg. 2, the major portion of the shank 5 is of double thickness.
The end portion of the member 1 with which the shank 5 is en aged is provided at opposite sides of said s iank with the upstandlng lugs 8 while the opposite end portion of the member 1 is provided with the upstanding flange 9 provided adjacent its opposite ends with the inwardly directed lips or tongues 10. 7
W11 denotes a blade carrier which overlies the guard member 1 and said blade carrier 11 has its central portion provided with the elongated opening or slot 12 with the ends of said slot or opening defined by the down-. wardly disposed flanges 14. Theblade carrier 11 is of a length. less than the member 1 and the flanges 14 are spaced apart a distance less than the longitudinal axis of the opening or slot 3 so that when the blade carrier 11 is in applied position, the same is capable of reci rocation. The flanges 14 extend through tie slot or opening 3 and substantially snugly engage therein, where by the slot or opening 3 serves as a guide whereby the blade carrier 11 has vibration in substantially a fixed path of travel.
A longitudinal margin of the blade carrier 11 defining the o ening or slot 12 is provided with a depen ing arcuate win 15 which when the blade carrier 11 is app ied, exten 5 through the opening or slot 3 and \mountings for a" journal rod 26.
the lower or free end portion of said wing a blade carrier 11 and the central portion of said cutting blade C is provided with the elongated opening or slot 17 through which the flanges 14 also extend, said flanges and end edges of the blade C being in contact so that the blade carrier 11 and the blade C will be caused to reciprocate or vibrate in unison. The blade C is of a double edge type and of such width to permit the .blade to be used in connection w1th either of the guards 2. i The notch or recess 4 is provided to facilitate the proper passage of 'thewing 15 through the slot or opening 3'and for which reason. it is also deslred that the width of the slot or openin 17 be substantially equal to the width of t e slot or opening 3 plus,
the depth of the notch or recess 4. The marginal portions of the blade C defining the ends of the opening or-slot 17 are provided with the notches or recesses 18 in which the flanges 14snugl engage so that the blade C is effectivel lie movement in ependently ofthe blade .carrier 11 which would otherwise interfere with the efliciency of the device.
19 denotes a clamping late which is adapted to overlie the app ied blade carrier 11 and one end portion of the plate 19 is provided in its upper surface with the recesses or notches 20 which receive the lips or tongues 10 hereinbefore referred to. The
opposite end portion of the plate 19 has close contact with the inner faces of the lugs 8. Said end portion of the plate 19 between the lugs 8 is provided with a short shank 21 which overlles and. contacts withthe remaining parts of the device are effectively held or retained in working assembly. The central portion of theplate 19 is pro: vided with an elongated opening For slot 24 provided at its opposite ends with the u standing ears 25. The ears 25 rovi e fioosely mounted on the rod 26 and ,snugl fitting between the earsv 25 is a roller 2 This roller 27 extends through the openings or slots 17, 12 and 3 so that the pin 16 hereld against any transverseinbefore referred to may be properly engaged within the cam groove 28 provided in the periphery of the roller 27 and extending circumferentially therearound.
he periphery of the roller 27 is serrated or otherwise roughened so that as the razor is drawn across the face with the roller 27 in contact therewith, said roller will rotate and at the same time reciprocate or vibrate the blade carrier 11 and the blade C so that the cutting of the hair is materially facilitated.
Under certain conditions, it is of advantage that the cutting blade C be held against vibration or reciprocation and particularly wheneit is desired to shave the upper lip in close proximity to the nostril. As herein disclosed, the roller 27 is held against rotationby a catch 29 carried b the clamping plate 19 which engages witiiin one of the circumferentially spaced notches or recesses 30 formed in the periphery of the roller 27. The notches or recesses 30 are spaced apart a distance whereby, when the catch 29 is engaged in one of said notches, or recesses 30, the blade C will be positively held at the limit of its reciprocatory movement in one direction. This isof importance in view of the fact that an end of the blade C will be sufficiently extended to materially facilitate the shaving of the upper lip in close proximity to the nostril.
From the foregoing description it is. thought to be obvious that a razor constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obviousthat my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof andv for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: v
