Specification of Letters Patent.

T 0 all 20 ham it may concern Be it known that we, ALBERT RUEBSAMEN and VVALTER L. DENNIS, citizens of the United States, respectively residing at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, and at Decatur, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fare-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in coin, ticket, fare or other article collecting devices bearing a till or other article receptacle which is adapted to be removed from the main body or casing by certain authorized parties only. This invention relates particularly to the mechanism disclosed and claimed in our copending application, Serial Number 282,307 filed March 13. 1919 and the principal object thereof is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of certain of the parts thereof.
One object of the invention is the improvement of the means for controlling the operation of the tilting lid or tray and the sliding lid or cover of the receptacle or till, whereby the lid or cover of the receptacle or till cannot be moved to closed position until the lid 01' tray is dumped and whereby the lid or tray cannot be dumped when the sliding lid or cover is in closed position.
Another object of this invention is the provision of improved means for normally holding the tilting lid or tray in closed position and returning the same to closed position after being dumped.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, our invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and which show merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure,preferred embodiments of our invention, it being expressly understood. however, that various changes may be made in practice, within the scope of the claims, without digressing from our inventive idea.

It is to be noted that in these drawings only the pertinent parts of the construction are shown as a. full and complete disclosure is made in said copending application, the construction being the same except for the parts herein shown. described and claimed.
In these drawings, the numeral 10 designates the main casing or body of the receptacle as a whole, which is adapted to be supported in proper position for use by any suitable means. This casing is preferably of elongated rectangular form and has a suitable hopper portion 11, having glass or other transparent panels 12 and battle plates, as usual, part of one being shown and designated 13.
At the bottom of this hopper portion, the interior frame work of the casing is formed so as to provide a somewhat restricted opening 14 leading from the hopper to an. intermediate part or compartment. This opening is provided with the downwardly inclined side edge parts 15. Baffle plate 13 leads to the inclined edge part at one side which is removed some distance from the side of the casing so that there is no opportunity for coins or other articles passing into that part of the casing to interfere with the various operating parts which are located there.
This opening or passage 14 is adapted to be normally closed by means of the tray or plate 16, the rear end of which is secured to shaft 17 which is suitably journaled in the frame and has the operating handle 18 on the outside of the casing for manipulation.

member 22 which is slidably mounted in bracket 23 resting upon roller 21 therein. This wedge shaped forcing member is nor mally held in its extended position, shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, by means of expansion spring 25, embracing rod or stem 26- and bearing against the stop or abutment 27 and the end of the member 22. It is obvious from a consideration of this construction that the tilting lid or tray 16 is normally held in closed position by means of spring 25, forcing member 22 against the cam element 19, but that the construction is such that manipulation of handle 18 with sufficient force to tilt the lid or tray, will cause the cam element 19 to push the forcing member 22 back against the pressure of spring 25, so that when the pressure on the handle ceases the spring will immediately cause the closing of the tilting lid or tray.
Referring now, particularly to Figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the drawing, the till or article receptacle, part of which only is shown, is designated by the reference numeral 28. It may be removed from the casing, either through the bottom thereof or the side, and is locked in position against unauthorized removal, as explained in said copending application. This till or receptacle is of general cubical shape. In the upper part ,of this till, the giudeways 30, are provided, which are adapted to register with the guideways 31 provided in the intermediate part of the casing below the tilting lid or tray 16. The lid or cover 32 of the till is slidably mounted in the guideways 30 and is provided with a rack 33 on the under side thereof, in which pinion 31 011 shaft 35 meshes, so that when this shaft is rotated, the lid or cover will be moved either to or from its open or closed position, as the case may be.

Referring to Fig. 3, it is seen that on the shaft 17 are provided two elongated arms or extensions 39 and 40, disposed out of alinement with each other.

The longer extension 40 is offset from member 39 and extends slightly forward of the vertical plane of shaft 17, it being understootl that the left hand side of Fig. 3 is referred to as the forward part thereof. This member 41-0 is located in line with or in the path of movement of the stop element It is seen, therefore, that when the till or receptacle is inserted within the casing, with its sliding lid or cover 32 closed, that the parts assume the full line position of Fig. 3, with the arm or extension 39 bearing against the top surface of the stop member 37, so that the lid or tray 16 cannot be tilted until the sliding lid or cover is moved to open position, when the stop member 37 is moved out from under arm or extension 39.
It is also to be noted, that, as the arm or extension 40 is in the path of movement of the stop member 38, the opening move ment of the sliding lid or cover 32 will cause theengagement of the member 40 by the element 38 and the consequent rotation of shaft 17 and tilting of the lid or tray 16, so
that any articles thereon must be dumped into the till or receptacle when its lid or cover is opened. Also that it is impossible to dump the tilting lid or tray 16 until the sliding lid or cover 32 of'the till or rez-eptacle is opened.
It is also to be noted that when the sliding lid or cover 32 is in its .open position that it fits partly in the guideways 31 of the casing and partly in the guideways 30 of the till or receptacle whereby the till or receptacle is held in the casing againstremoval until the lid or cover 32 is closed. Furthermore, it is seen that as the ex-terr. sion 40 is located in the path of movement of stop element 38, see dotted line -i osition of lid or .cover 32 in Fig. 3, it is impossible to close the lid or cover 32 unless the tilting lid or tray is dumped and held in that posi-, tion, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3-. In that event, the extension 10 is moved out" of the way and the lid or cover 32 maybe moved to closed position.
'It is seen, therefore, that any articles on tray 16 will be dumped when the coroner lid 32 is moved to open position and also that any articles on tray 16, must be dumped and it held in dumping position before the lid or cover 32 can be. moved from open position to closed position, whereby the loss or theft of coins or other articles is prevented Having described our invention, what We claim is 1. A mechanism of thecharacter described including in'combination a main casing or body having a hopper and provided witl r an opening leadinginto an intermediate part,
a lid or tray for opening and-closingsaid opening, a shaft journaled in said main case mg ,or body and located near one side of said opening, said lid or tray being secured to said shaft, a spring pressed wedge element slidably mounted in one side of said body or casing, and cooperatively arranged with reference to said shaft so as to resist the opening movement of said lid or tray and to force the, same to a closed position when pressure on the shaft is released, a sliding closure held closed by a part moved by said tray while the latter is closed.
2. A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a main casing or body having a hopper and provided with an opening leading into an intermediate part, a lid or tray for opening and closing said opening, a shaft j ournaled in said main casing or body and extending along one side of said opening, said lid or tray being secured to said shaft, a cam element on one end of said shaft, a wedge shaped element arranged so as to be engaged by said cam ele ment and resilient means for holding said wedge shaped element against said cam element whereby the opening movement of said lid or tray is resisted and the same is forced to a closed position when pressure on the shaft is released, a sliding closure held closed by a part moved by said tray While the latter is closed. 1
3. A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a main casing or body having a hopper and provided with an opening leading into an intermediate part, a lid or tray for opening and closing said opening, a shaft journaled in said main casing or body, located adjacent one side of said opening, said lid or tray being connected to said shaft, a laterally extending cam element secured to one end of said shaft, a member slidably mounted along one side of said main casing or body and having an inclined surface arranged in such position as to be engaged by said cam element and resilient means for forcing said member against said cam element whereby the opening movement of said lid or tray is resisted and the same is forced to a closed position when pressure on the operating shaft re leased, a sliding closure and means controlled by the aforesaid tray to hold said 'closure closed.
4. A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a main casing or body having a hopper and provided with an opening leading into an intermediate part, a tilting lid or tray for opening and closing said opening, an article receiving till adapted to be inserted in said main body or casing below said intermediate portion thereof, said till having a sliding cover and associated means on said sliding cover in the path of movement of a part of said tilting lid or tray for preventing the tilting of the lid or tray when the sliding cover is in closed position and for causing the tilting of the lid or tray as the sliding cover is moved from closed to open position and for preventing the movement of the sliding cover from open position to closed position without dumping the tilting lid or tray.

A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a main casing or body having a hopper and provided with an opening leading into an intermediate part, a tilting lid 01' tray for opening and closing said opening, an article receiving till adapted to be inserted in said main body or casing below said intermediate portion thereof, said till having'a sliding cover, an abutment on said sliding cover and extension members connected to said tilting lid or tray and adapted to cooperate with said abutment on the sliding cover to prevent dumping of the tilting lid or tray when the sliding cover is in closed position, to cause the tilting of the dumping lid or tray as the sliding cover is moved from closed to open position and to prevent the movement of the sliding cover from open to closed position without dumping the tilting lid or tray.

A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a main casing or body having a hopper and provided with an opening leading into an intermediate part, a tilting lid or tray for opening and closing said opening, an article receiving till adapted to be inserted in said main body or casing below said intermediate portion thereof, said till having a sliding cover, an abutment member on said sliding cover and extension members connected to said tilting lid or tray, one of said xtension members being adapted to bear on top of said abutment member when the sliding cover is in closed position so as to prevent the dumping of the tilting lid or tray, the other of said extension members being located in the path of movement of said abutment so as to cause the dumping of the tilting lid or tray when the sliding cover is moved from closed to open position.

A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a main casing or body having a hopper and provided with an opening leading into an intermediate part, a tilting lid or tray for opening and closing said opening, an article receiving till adapted to be inserted in said main body or casing below said intermediate portion thereof, said till having a sliding cover, an abutment member on said sliding cover and extension members connected to said tilting lid or tray, one of said extension members being adapted to bear on top of said abutment member when the sliding cover is in closed position so as to prevent the dumping of the tilting lid or tray, the other of said extension members being also located in the path of movement of said abutment when the sliding cover is in open position so that the sliding cover cannot be moved from open position to closed position unless the tilting lid or tray is dumped to move the extension out of the path of movement of said abutment when the sliding cover moves from open to closed position.

A mechanism of the character described including in combination, a main casing or body having a hopper and provided with an opening leading into an intermediate part, a tilting lid or tray for opening and closing said opening, an article receiving till adapted to be inserted in said main body or casing below said intermediate portion thereof, said till having a sliding cover, an abutment member on said sliding cover formed in two parts, one being les in height and less in length than the other and a pair of extension members connected to said tilting lid or tray, one extending at a slight angle to the perpendicular through the axis thereof and. the other extending at a slight angle on the other side of said perpendicular to the axis thereof, one of said extension members being said shorter extension being adapted'to rest upon the top of the smaller part of said abutment member when the sliding cover 1s 1n closed position and thereby prevent the dumping of the tilting lid or tray when the sliding cover is in said closed position, said longer extension member being adapted to be actuated by the larger part of said abutment member in the movement of said sliding cover from closed to open position whereby the tilting lid or tray is dumped during this movement, said longer extension also serving as means to prevent th movement of the sliding lid or cover from open to closed position unless the tilting lid or tray is dumped.
