CARL SCH IRMER, F IB IIBBING, MINNESOTA.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pa,tent d A 1 1 1 Application filed November 23, 320; Serial No. 425,989.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL SOHIRMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hibbing, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing- 7 construct such a machine as to enable the edover a closet bowl so as to discharge the user thereof to wash and cleanse infants soiled clothing and other garments quickly and conveniently with a minimum amount of handling;
Another object is chine of this character that itmay be mountwater into the bowl after the washing has been effected without necessitating lifting of the machine. 7 I
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings. 7
Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of a washing machine embodying this invention shown mounted on a closet bowl the bowl being in elevation.
Fig. 2 represents a detail sectional view of the upper portion or section of the machine taken in a plane at rightangles to Fig. 1, and, r i
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated the machine constituting this invention is shown constructed in the form of a cylindrical body member 1 composed of two sections 2 and 3 telescopically connected the upper. section 2 being provided on its outer face with a laterally extending annular flange 4: spaced from its lower edge and which is designed to rest on the upper edge of section 8 when the sections are in assembled position.
The uppersection 2 has a closed upper end and is provided with handles'2 to facilitate its application and removal. This section 2 1s provlded near its'lower end with a transversely extending bar 5 secured by any suitable means to the opposed side walls of the section and which is designed to form a guide for plunger rods 9 and 10 which carry at their lower ends plungers or 7 pounders 11 and 12. These pounders are preferably constructed in the formof hol-' lowtruncated cones perforated as shownat 13 for the passage therethrough of the cleanslng liquid.
A crank shaft 6 extends transversely across the upper end of section 2 and'is here shown provided with two oppositely extendingcranks 7'and 8 with which are connected the plunger rods 9 and. 10' so that be alternately reciprocated.
A cogwheel-M is carried by thecrank shaft 6 andmeshes'with a gear 15 carried p wvhen shaft 6 is rotatedthe plungerswill to so constructama by a shaft 16 equipped with a crank arm 17.
This shaft-16 extends through one side wall of section 2 and through an upright support 18 which'depends from the inner face of the top of section2 and is apertured forthe passage therethrough of shaft 6. It will thus be seen that when the crank 17 is r0- tated the shaft 6 will be driven through the gears 15 and 14 thus reciprocating the plungers 11 and 12 it being obvious that power may be substituted for the manually actuated means.
The top of section 2 is preferably pro- I vided with a vent valve 19 to permit the escape of steam and to prevent the formation of a vacuum in the machine.
The lower section 3 is closed at its lower end by a downwardly inclined bottom 20 spaced inwardly from the lower .end of section 3 said end being designed for insertion within the closet bowl B as is shown clearly in Fig. 1. This inclined bottom 20 is provided with a centrally disposed discharge opening closed by a slide valve 21 having a handle 22 extending through the side wall of the section in convenient position for operation.
A false bottom 23 is mounted in the lower endof section 3 above and spaced from the bottom 20 and is composed of perforated ment of a hose to supply water to the cylinder 1. A flange 25 L-shaped in cross section is fixed to section. 3 on its outer face at a point spaced from its lower end and is designed to rest on the closet seat with its end mizrtending into the closet bowl as shown in In the use of this machine it having been mounted on a closet bowl B as shown in Fig. 1 the upper section 2 is lifted from section 3 and the clothing to be washed placed in said section 3 on the perforated bottom 23. Soap or other cleansing material may be placed in with the clothing and the section 2 replaced. The connection 24. which is equipped with a valve is then opened to admit water to the container and after a sufficient amount has been admitted the valve in said connection is closed and the machine is ready for use.
valve 211s opened which permits the dirty water to pass out of the machine into the closet bowl and thence to the sewer. valve may be closed and clean water inserted for rinsing. After the rinsing water has been discharged the shaft 6 may be rotated to press out as effectively as possible all water from the clothing and the clothing may then be removed and hung out to dry or treated in any other manner.
The
It is to be understood that this machine is for washing small articles of clothing only and will be found very convenient for washing babies clothes especially.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claim may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. 1
What I claim is:
A washing machine composed of two telescoping cylindrical sections one of which is open at both ends and the other open at one end and closed at the other, means for limiting the telescopic engagementv of said sections, washing elements mounted to re ciprocate in one of said sections, an annular flange on the outer face of the lower end of the open ended section spaced from the end of said section and adapted to rest on the closet seat to form a support for the machine, a bottom in said section spaced inwardly from its lower end and having a central opening, said bottom inclining downwardly toward said opening, a slide, valve for closing the opening and having a handle extending through one side wall of the cylinder, and a perforated false bottom mounted above the first named bottom.
In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature hereto.
CARL SCHIRMER.
