Be it known that we, LornAfRULnY and ORVILLE F. OSBURN citizens of the United.-
States, residin at Ilelena, in the county of Alfalfa and tate of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tool mainly designed for removing and replacing bushings in automobile pistons and the like, the
principal object of the invention bein to provide means for forcing the bushing into or out of place by a screw device which has screw threaded engagement with a seat member so that the movement of one part toward the other part will force the bushing out of the opening or into the opening, as the case ma be.
, Another 0 ject of the invention is to provide a plurality of ferrules or sleeves of differentsizes, any one of which is adapted to be passed over the screw member and to fit in the bushing, said ferrule transmitting the pressure of the screw member to the bushing.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arran ement of the several parts, to be hereina illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which 2-- Fi re 1 is a view, with parts in section, showing the tool being used to force a bushing from a piston.

' catedat 13. It will thus be seen that when the socket member is placed in a vise and thethe-old .bushings when worn or broken and inserting new ones. As shown the device comprises a spindle 3 having a reduced lower part 4, a portion of which 1s provided with screw threads 5. The head 6 of the spindle has an opening 7 therein to receive a handle 8 by which the spindle may be turned. A plurality of ferrules or sleeves 9 of varying sizes are provided, any one of which may be placed on the reduced part of the spindle with its upper end engaging the shoulder formed at the junction of the reduced part with the main part of the spindle. The upper end of each ferrule is provided with a flange 10. The cylindrical part of the ferrule is adapted to, enter the bushin while spindle is made of sufficient length as to extend entirely through the piston as shown in the drawing and when the bushings are to, be removed a socket member 11 is used with the spindle, this socket member having its large end curved to conform to the curved wall of the piston to form a seat for said piston. The socket in said member is made large enough to receive the bushing. The socket member is provided with a flattened extension 12 which has a screw threaded bore therein and which is adapted to be placed between the jaws of a vise as indi-' piston placed on its curved end, the spindle may be passed through the bushings of the piston with its screw threaded end engaging the screw threaded bore in the socket member. Before the spindle is placed in position the ferrule of proper size is placed on its reduced part with the cylindrical part of the ferrule engaging the bushing. Then by screwing the spindle into the socket member pressure will be exerted against the ferrule to cause the same to press upon the busht ng and thus force said bushing out of the piston and into the socket member.
After the bushings have been removed from the 'piston and. it is desired to insert new ones a member 14 has its stem 15 placed in the vise with its enlarged part 16 located under the inner end of one of the sockets 2 of the piston. This enlarged part is provided with a screw threaded bore 17 and a counter-sink 18, this counter-sink being of a size to receive snugly the end of the bushing. The proper sized ferrule is then the ferrule is placed on'the spin 1e and the screw threaded part of the spindle placed *5 in engagement with the screw threaded bore rule to press 17 of the member 14. Then the spindle is rotated so as to cause the threads thereon engagin" "the bore of member 14 to feed the parts downwardly and thus cause the ferthe new bushings into place. It will of course be understood that our tool may be used for removing and replacing bushingls wherever desired as we do not wish to be imited upon its use on automobile pistons or other parts. It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of our invention will be readily apparent.
We desire it to be understoo that we may make changes in the construction and inthe combination 'and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is 1. A tool of the class described comprising a spindle having a reduced part forming a shoulder with screw threads upon the reduced portion, a flanged ferrule removably arranged on the spindle and having its upper end engaging the shoulder and a supporting member having a screw threaded bore for receiving the screw threaded end of the spindle.
2. A tool of the class described comprising a spindle having a reduced screw threaded part, said reduced part forming a shoulder, 'a flanged ferrule on the reduced part with its upper end engaging the shoulder and a socket member having a screw threaded bore for receiving the screw threaded part of the spindle and a vise engaging part.
