JERSEY,
A. 'WOI'I'ON, OF MONTGLAIB, NEW
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that we, HARRY W. PUG]! and JAMES A. WOTTON, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, and at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, respectivelly, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Adapters for Telephone Callin Devices, of which the following is a full, 0 ear, concise,
, and exact description.
This invention relates to adapters for calling devices and transmitters, and more particularly to an adapter providing means for assembling together-a calling device and a telephone transmitter into a self-contained unit which may be readily attached to a subscribers telephone instrument.
Its object is an adapter whereby a calling device and a transmitter may be readily attached to a wall type subscribers telephone instrument, without the necessity of making any additional holes or otherwise defacing the telephone instrument.
This adapteris particularly intended for application to telephone instruments connecting with central oflices which have been reequipped and transformed from manual operation to automatic operation.
When a previously manually operated telephone central oflice' is reequipped for automatic operation, it is necessary to equip each subscribers telephone instrument connecting with that ofiice, with a calling device such as that described in United States Patent No. 1161854 to O. F. Forsberg which, if mounted directly on the face of a wall type instrument, necessitates making a hole therein, at or near the point where the calling device is to the wires connecting with the calling device to the interior of the instrument, or, as an alternative, to run the wires from the calling device along the face of the instrument to the opening at the rear of the transmitter, through which the wires connecting with the transmitter are'passed to the interior of the instrument. ThlS latter method would result in an unsightly appearance incompatible with ood telephone practice.
It is, 0
ing devices, that the necessity of making additional holes in the subscribers telephone instruments side elevation and Fi be mounted in order to passcourse, desirable in attaching callbe obviated and furthermore, on
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented Aug. 16, 1921. Application filed November 11, 1919. Serial No. 887,858.
necting wires for the calling device through the face of the instrument at the particular point where it is desired to attach the dial, on account of interference by apparatus inside the set. This is especially true of some types of coin collectin telephones, wherein any additional wires w ich might be passed through the face of the instrument would be likely to interfere with the coin chute therein.
This invention provides an adapter combining in one piece, means whereby a calling device can be mounted on a subscribers telephone instrument of the wall type without the necessity of making any additional holes in said instruments, means for mountmg a transmitter on said subscribers instrument, and an inclosed conduit for the conductors leading from the telephone set to. the transmitter and calling device.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a g. 2 a front elevation showing the adapter with a callin device and transmitter attached thereto an mounted on the face of a telephone wall type instrument. 1 is the adapter, 2 is the calling device, 3 the transmitter, and 4 the telephone box. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the adapter in which 5 is a channel forming a conduit for the conductor from the calling device to an opening in the face of the telephone box situated at the rear of the transmitter through which the conductors from both the calling device and the transmitter are passed to the interior of the telephone box. 7 and 8 are screw holes for attaching the adapter to the face of the telephone box. 9 is an opening provided for passing the transmitter cord through the adapter to the aforementioned openmg in the face of the telephone box through which the cords pass to the interior thereof. 10, 11 and 12 are holes provided for attaching the calling device to the adapter, and 13and 14 are lugs for attaching the transmitter to the adapter, lug 13 being shown with a part broken off in order to expose the opening 9.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a subscribers telephone an adapter, a
on the other end portion thereof, and means for detachably mounting said adapter on said set.
2. In combination, a subscribers telephone set including a transmitter, an adapter comprising a metal plate, a callin device attached to one end portion thereo a channel integral with said adapter forming a conduit for conductors for said callin device, and means for detachably mounting said adapter on said set.
3. In combination, a subscribers telephone set including a transmitter, an adapter comprising a formed metal plate, a calling ditachably mounting said adapter on said se In witness whereof, we hereunto subscribe ggi'names this 8th day of November, A. D.
