Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 16, 1921- Application filed October 22, 1919. Serial No. 332,434.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMETT J. MOGORRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mauch Chunk, in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Car Brakes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to railway car brakes and has a particular reference to operating mechanism therefor.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a brake operating mechanismwhich is hand operated and is so constructed as not to interfere with the operation of the brake by the usual air pressure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hand controlled brake operating mechanism whichmay be quickly applied and will positively brake the car wheels.
It is another object of the invention to provide a railway car brake operating mechanism which will dispense with the usual chain and which may be operated by the usual hand wheel without the use of a brake rod or bar.
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a hand operated brake operated mechanism which is so associated with the brake or operating rod leadin from the air cylinder as to permit this ro to be moved longitudinally by the usual air pressure to apply the brake without afi'ect ing the hand operating mechanism in any way, the latter being capable of operation to actuate the brake when it is not desired to actuate thesameby air pressure.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a brake operating mechanism which is simple in construction, conslsts of few parts, and may be manufactured and installed at a small cost. J
With the above and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the 'novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement, operations and specific features all of whlch may be hereinafter enlarged upon and recited in the subjoined claims, the invention beingillustrated in the attached drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevationof a railway car having my improved brake operating mechanism applied thereto;
Fig 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the brake operating mechanism applied to the car;
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the railway car having my improved brake applied thereto;
Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the supporting bracket embodied in the invention, detached from the car;
Fig. 5 is a detail View of the operative connection between the brake rod and the operating shaft;
Referring to the drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 5 denotes a railway car of any conventional construction which is equipped with the usual air brake cylinder and brake rod the air brake rod being designated at 6 and is provided with a turn buckle 7 whereby the rod sections may be adjusted to the desired length. The inner end of the brake rod is associated with the brake cylinder in the usual manner while the opposite end is provided with a longitudinal slot 8.
There isprovided a vertically disposed supporting plate 10 which is detachably connected with the lower edge of the car 5 throu h the medium of a fastening 11 so that t is plate depends below the car. A horizontally disposed securing plate 12 extends at right angle to the plate 10 adjacent its upper end and disposed upon the under face of the car and secured thereto by fastenings 13. Substantially Y-shaped bearing arms and braces 14 are cast with the lower end of the plate 10 at its inner face and with the ends of the plate 12. The outer face of the plate 10 is formed with parallel horizontally disposed bearings 15 in which is journaled a worm shaft 16 which extends to the upper end of the car and engages with the bearing 17 adjacent this upper end and is provided with a hand wheel 18. A step or platform 19 is mounted upon the car adjacent the upper end thereof and mounted thereon is a pivoted pawl engageable w1th a ratchet wheel 20 fixed to the shaft 16 and retaining the same against rotation when the brake is in set osition. Collars 21 are engaged upon the s aft upon opposite sldes of the upper bearing. 15, while a nut 22 1s enga ed upon the lower end of the shaft. A bell crank lever 23 is disposed between the arms 14 and pivoted therebetween by .a
pin 24:. The inner end of this bell crank lever' has a slidable connection with the slotted end of the brake rod as at 25 while 7 the opposite end of this lever is forked or bifurcated to afford parallel arms 26 having parallel slots 27 therein. The forked leg ofthe bell crank lever is movable in a slot 28 that extends vertically of the plate 10.
An interiorly threaded rectangular sleeve 29 is engaged with the threaded end of the worm. shaft and is movable longitudinally thereon upon rotation of the worm shaft. This sleeve 29 is disposed between the-arms 26 and is provided with a laterally and forwardly extending enlargement 30 having a horizontally-disposed bore 31through which extends a pin 32 having slidable engagement sha ment to the member upon rotation of the' in the slot 27 in the arm 26.
From the disclosure it will be apparent that upon rotating the worm shaft by the hand wheel in a clock-wise direction the rectangular sleeve will travel downwardly on the ,shaft thus rocking the bell crank lever which in turn shifts the brake rod forwardly to apply the brake (not shown). Upon rotating the shaft in the reverse direction the sleeve will be caused to travel upplate secured to the car, combined braces and bearing arms formed with both plates and disposed parallel to each other, bearings extending outwardly from the vertical plate, a shaft rotatabl mounted therein, a
long-1t udinally movab e member on said means to impart longitudinal moveshaft, a brake rod, and an operative connection between the brake rod and said longitudinally movable member.
2. The combination with a longitudinally movable actuating rod, of asupported plate provided with a longitudinal slot, a shaft journaled. on the plate, a sleeve engaged with the shaft and movable longitudinally of the same, and a bell crank lever having one end operatively connected with the actuating rod and its opposite ends disposed in .the slot and slidably connected with the sleeve.
3. The combination with a longitudinally movable brake rod, of ashaft journaled adjacent one end of the rod, a bell crank lever pivoted adjacent the shaft and having one end 0 eratively connected with the rod, the
opposlte end of the lever being provided with spaced arms having parallel. slots therein, a member disposed between the arms, an enlargement on the member provided with a bore, a pin extending through the bore and slidably engaged in the slots in the arms, and means operated by the shaft to cause the member to move longitudinally of the shaft to rock the bell crank lever to shift the actuating rod.
4. The combination witha longitudinally movable brake rod,of a shaft journaled adj acent one end of the rod, a supporting structure provided with an elongated slot, a bell crank mounted on said supporting structure and having one armextended through the slot thereof, said arm bein bifurcated and provided with elongated sits in its-bifurcated portions, a pin extended through said slotsof the bifurcated ends of the arm, a sleeve carried by said pin, means engaged with said sleeve and operable by said shaftto operate said bell crank lever, and connections between the remaining arm of said bell crank lever and said brake rod.
