T T MIIEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINCENT STAWICKI, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
AUTOMOBILE-JACK.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VINCENT S'mwioKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of lVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Jacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in automobile jacks.
The object of the invention is to provide a jack which may be operated from the drivers seat to elevate all four wheels of a motor vehicle from the ground. Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the power of the vehicle may be utilized to operate the jack. Other objects of this invention are to provide jacks permanently connected to the vehicle axle, and to provide means for supporting the jacks in an elevated position at such times as they are inoperative.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows a side elevation of two jacks made in accordance with this invention showing diametrically their application to a motor vehicle.
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the jacks and the vehicle axle in plan, and showing diagrammatically the mechanical connections provided for the operation of the jacks.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout both views.
Attached to the rear axle housing 1, adjacent each wheel, is a pair of bracket members 2 and 3 which may be secured in place by means of bolts 4 and nuts 5. The bracket 2, upon each side of the car, supports one end of the housing 6 within which the jack driving shaft 7 is rotatably mounted. A suitable plug 8, at the end of the housing 6, provides a bearing for the shaft 7 and is journaled within the bracket 2 so that when the jack is elevated it will pivot upon the axis of its driving shaft 7. The jack casing 9 is penetrated by the shaft 7 which is provided at its inner end with a beveled gear wheel 10. Axially alined with shaft 7 upon the opposite side of easing 9 is a stud 12 which has a pivotal bearing in the bracket 3.
The jack casing 9 is preferably rectangular in cross section. It is provided near its upper end with a partition 13 through which passes a screw shaft 14. This shaft is provided at its upper end above the partition 13, with a beveled gear wheel 15 that meshes with the wheel 10 upon the end of shaft 7.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 16, 1921. Application filed March 25, 1921.
Serial No. 455,534.
A collar 16 upon the screw 14 bears against the lower side of the cross wall or partition 13, and transmits pressure from the screw 14 to the casing 9 of the jack. On the side of the jack casing 9 adjacent to the axle is a shoulder 18 which is adapted to receive and support the axle housing when the jack is in operative position. It will be apparent that when the jack is raised by manipulation of the links, hereinafter to be described, the jack will pivot about the axis of its driving shaft 7, and the shoulder 18 will move out of contact with the axle housing 1.
Within the jack casing 9 a piston 19 is operable. The piston 19 has a foot 20 adapted to rest upon the road when the jack is in use. An internal thread, within the piston 19, receives the threaded lower end of the screw shaft 14. Thus when the drive shaft 7 is rotated, its motion will be imparted through the bevel gears 10 and 15, and the screw shaft 14 to the screw piston or plunger 19, causing the latter to move outwardly until the foot 20 contacts with the road. Thereupon, the relative outward motion continuing, the weight of the vehicle will be supported by the shoulder 18, the jack casing 9. the cross head or partition 13. and the collar 16 and the screw 14.
Power for the operation of the jack can be taken from any part of the driving mechanism of the vehicle. It is convenient to extend a driven shaft through the wall of the vehicle transmission casing. and to utilize the extended'shaft as the source of power for the operation of the jack. To such a shaft or to any other convenient source of power the shaft 25, shown'in Fig. 2, is connected. Shaft 25 is journaled in each end of a transmission casing 26. The gear wheels 27 and 28 turn free upon the shaft, but may be connected therewith by means of the clutch member 29 splined upon the shaft 25, and shiftable longitudinally along said shaft to engage either of the gear wheels 27 or28. The wheel 27 is in mesh with the wheel 30 upon the drive shaft 31, and the wheel 28 meshes through wheel 32 with the wheel 33, which is also fast to the shaft 31. It will be apparent thatwhen the shiftable clutch member 29 is engaged with wheel 27 the ackdriving shaft 31 will be rotated in one direction, and when the clutch member is engaged with the gear wheel 28 the shaft 31 will be rotated in the opposite direction. The shaft 31 extends longitudinally beneath the car and is provided at each end with a worm gear 35 which meshes with and drives the pinions upon the shaft 7. Suitable mechanism is provided for shifting the member 29 to operate the jack'in either direction. When the member 29 is in the neutral position in which it is illustrated in Fig. 2, the shaft turns freely and the 37. This linkis pivoted intermediate of its ends upon a bracket38' attached to a frame member or portion of the car body 39. A
, rod 40 operatively-connects the link 37 with a hand lever 41, such as is customarily provided for the operation ofthe emergency brake. By means of the hand lever 4:1, which is preferably located adjacent to the drivers seat, the links 37 can be rotated upon their supporting brackets to move the rods 36 and cause the jack casings 9 to swing upon their pivotal mountings from retracted to operative positions, or vice versa. 1
When it is desired to jack up a vehicle equipped with the jacks of this invention, the procedure is as follows. The handle 11 will be used to move each of the jacks from its retracted position to operative position, in
which each jack is shown in the accompanyingdrawings. It will be understood that the vehicle motor is in operation. Suitable shifting mechanism is now employed to move the clutch member 29 longitudinally of the power shaft 25 to engagement with the gear wheel 27. Motion will thereby be transmitted through gear Wheel 30, drive shaft 31, worm gears 35, the pinions upon shafts 7', beveled gears 10 and 15, and screw shafts 14: to the plungers 19, which, by the slow rotation of the screwsl l, will move outwardly and lift the vehicle.
gagement with the gear wheel 28 which meshes with the gear wheel 31 to turn the.
gear wheel 33 and the drive shaft 31 in an opposite direction to that in which it was turned by the gear wheel 27. The screw shafts 14 will accordingly rotate in such a direction as to retract the plungers 19, and the vehicle will settle to the ground. Thereupon the handle 11 is used to draw the jacks out of engagement with the axle and elevate them to a position of safety beneaththe car. I claim 1. A motor vehicle, a plurality of jacks permanently attached to said vehicle, means for moving said jacks into and out of operative position, and means, for applying the power of the motor of said vehicle to operate the jacks.
2. The combination with a motor vehicle provided with axles, of means for pivotally securing a plurality of jacks to the axles, means carried by said jacks for engaging said axles when the jacks are in an operative position relative thereto, and means for simultaneously operating the jacks to elevate the vehicle. r
3; The combination with a motor vehicle provided with axles, of brackets carried by the axles, casing members pivoted to the brackets, plungers operable in said casings, positively driven means for expelling the plungers from the casings, and power connections for said means. 7 p
4:. The combination with a vehicle axle, of a bracket adapted to be mounted thereon, a
jack casing adapted to be pivotally carried by said bracket, means for moving the jack casing upon said pivot, and power connections axially alined with said pivot for operating the jack. V 5.
