BOOK CONSTRUCTION.
Application filed November 9, 1916.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that a, RUTH a citizen of the United States,
Sonnrznnno, residing at Grand Marais, in the county of Cook and- State of Minnesota, have invented iertain useful, vimprovements in Book Constructions, of whichthe following is a specification, referen e being had therein to the ac i-ompanying drawing.
. The invention relates to a book construction, and more particularly to the class of stamp books. r f
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a book of this character wherein the pages thereof support in a smooth manner sheets of postage stamps so as to hold the sheets smooth and to keep them from becoming mutilated or bent as well as obviating the sticking together of the stamps, thereby permitting the convenient handling of the stamps in this manner at postoflices or other places for the distribution of the same. I
Another object of the invention-is theprovision of a stamp book of this character wherein the pages may be waxed or otherwise surfaced and the sheets of stamps held upon the pages so that the stamps, either singly or in number, can be conveniently removed from the sheet which will-be sus tained smooth upon the page on one or both sides thereof, the pages of the book being suitably tabbed to enable access to difierent denominations of stamps in sheet form with despatch when the book is in use A further object of the invention is the provision of a book of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form and will properly fasten stamps in sheet fornn memorandum slips or the like so as to hold the same in convenient access and in proper order without the folding of the sheets, the wrinkling thereof or otherwise bending so that they will be in smooth 'ondition when held upon the pages of the book.
i-i still further object of the invention is the provision of 'abook of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in its purposeand inexpensive in manufacture. I
@ther objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth. I
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction combination of ele ments and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction herein- Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntgd A 6; 9, 1921 Serial No. 130,435.
after described, and the scopeof the appli-' cation of which will be indicated intheappended claim. I
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a perspective view of a book constructed in accordance with the invention showing the front cover open;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line of Fig. 1. V
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout .the several I views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A and B designate the cover sections, respectively, andG the back to which are flexibly connected the cover sections in any ordinary well known manner, the cover sections being preferably made from stiff cardboard, a1-
though the same may be made from any other suitable material, and fiexibleif desired throughout the extent thereof. Arranged between the cover sections is a plurality of leaves or pages D whichiare also made from cardboard, although they can be made from any other; suitable material, and the faces of th-esepages may be waxed or not as desired. Also it is'to be understood that the size of the book can bevaried and may contain any numb-erof pages, as the occasion may require. The plurality of pages are cut or otherwise provided with'indexing tabs E, in which 1s arranged indicla' i-ndicative of the respective page contents so that at a glance a user can determine the desired page for access thereto with dos-patch, the tabs E -being projected-from the pages so that the same can be clearly visible either before or subsequent .to the swinging of the front cover section to open position. The arra-nges ment and the protruding of the-index tabs of the book may be varied, as may be desired.
The pages D are fastened betweenfthe distortion of the pages when the book is in,
use. Upon the inner face of the front cover section A at opposite points contiguous to theinner and outer side edges are resilient clips, each formed with a base 5 and a finger or tongue 6, the base 5 being of con siderably greater width than the finger or tongue 6, and the said base is riveted or E and the construction of the cover section otherwise fastened to the cover section A so that in the use of the clips the resilient tongues or fingers 6 will grip a sheet 7 to hold the same smooth and in place upon the inner face of the cover A, and this sheet can be written upon or otherwise marked to serve as a memorandum in the use of the book when placing stamps in sheet form, slips or other memorandum sheets within the book or the removal thereof therefrom On one or both faces of each pageD is mounted a spring clip which comprises the relatively wider end portions 8 and 9 respectively and the intermediate narrow portion.
10, the portion 8 being adjustably or otherwise fastened to the page contiguous to the line of hinge or flexing point thereof, preferably through the medium of screws 11, while the remaining portions 9 and 10 of the clip are free and possess the required resiliency so that sheets of stamps, slips or memorandum sheets can be placed upon the face of the page and engaged by the clip for holding the sheet or slip smooth to prevent the wrinkling or bending thereof when held in place within the book, yet the said sheets or slips are freely accessible so that when holding stamps in sheet form the said stamps can be singly removed or any number of stamps detached from. the sheet and likewisethe slips can be detached from the clips for the removal thereof.
Each clip at the wider end 9 is bent outwardly along the straight edge thereof for a distance between a predetermined extent to form a lip 12 slightly offset with respect to the plane of the clip so that it can readily be raised from the page by hand without disturbing the sheet or slip held by the clip so that the sheet or slip can be removed or inserted between the clip and the face of the page adjacent thereto when the sheet or slip is to be held thereon. it is to be understood that either one or more clips can be fastened to the page on each side thereof, as the occasion may require. One of the salient features of the invention is the formation of the clip upon the page so that the sheet or slip will be held smooth to avoid wrinkling or bending thereof, and that such sheet or slip is readily accessible when the book is in use. The screws 11 permit the adjustment of the clips 10 relative to the faces of the page D on which the same are mounted so as to accommodate variable thicknesses of sheets placed upon the pages and held by the clips. It is to be understood that the clips may be riveted or otherwise fastened to the page D, or adj ustably fastened, and that the shape of the clips can be varied, if desired.
In constructing the book, changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to such as come properly within the scope-of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of use of the herein described book construction is readily apparent and, therefore, a further explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
In a device of the kind described, a series of pages, a series of resilient clips arranged in pairs with the two of each pair positioned against the opposite sides of each page, the inner end of said clips being secured to each page and their outer ends being free and formed with an outwardly curved lip disposed substantially at a right angle tov the clip, the lips of facing clips on adjacent pages abutting each other to space adjacent pages from each other, and a flexible binding strip having its opposite marginal portions secured to the two outer of the series of pages, the said strip being formed with a plurality of folds so arranged that the several pages are secured between them in a manner to permit the pages to be swung apart or against each other, the folds intervening between the pages forming means to space the pages apart, whereby open ended compartments are provided by the said folds and the abutting lips of said clips.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
RUTH G. SODERBERG.
