The wrapping fabric is usually cut' in the form of strips which are spirally wound about the article to completely cover it. It is diflicult to wrapthe strip spirally and cause it to conform to the shape of-the article. Moreover, when one of the convolutions'of aspirally wound wrapquently happens, the Wrapping tends to un- :wind from the article leaving it-uncovered.
It 'is accordingly important .that a fabric strip be devised which will readily conform to the shape of the article about which it is to be wrapped and that means he provided for rapidly applying the fabric in a neat and efficient manner so that when one of the convolutions of the wrapping is broken the remainder of the wrapping will not be affected. a

. The'machine is provided with a frame 1 upon which .is mounted a driving motor 2. The driving shaft 3 has an annular gear 4: thereon which drives a transverse shaft 5 through a suitable train-of gears 6- and 7 which reduce the revolutions of shaft .5 to
the desired number.
The upper gear wheel 4 is keyed or otherwise secured to the motor shaft and the gear wheel 6 is mounted on astub shaft 8 while the gear wheel 7 is loose on the, transverse I shaft 5 and is adapted tobe locked to the same by a clutch 9 of any desired construction having a member ,slidably'interlocke d with theshaft'and'movable into and out of engagement with the gear wheel 7. When the clutch is moved mtoengagement with the gear wheel 7 the shaft 5 is connected I with and is adapted to be driven by the motor 2. The transverse shaft which is located at the rear portion of the machine is journaled in suitable bearings of the supporting frame and it has fixed to it a roll 11 having a suitable friction lining, not shown,-
and 17 which are simultaneously rotated in the same direction and which are connected i ofthe longitudinal shafts and 17 and coni 'sisting of a sprocket chain 18 and sprocket wheels 19 fixed to the rear ends of the shafts 16 and 17 and receiving and meshing with the said sprocket chain 18.
The shuttle 13 which is constructed of aluminum or other suitable material is supported in position for rotary movement by the rubber covered roller 11 and upper and lower front'flanged rollers-2O and 21 which are mounted on suitable stub shafts located at one side of the machine, the other side being open. The annularshuttle is provided with a hinged section 22 pivoted at 23 and constituting a door for enabling the annular shuttle to be readily placedaround a tire, or other annular article, or .to permit the tire 23 or other article, to" be readily placed in and removed from the machine through the hinged section or door. The hinged section or door is locked in its closed position by a sprlng actuated pin or bolt 24 slidablv mounted on the hinged section 22 at the free end thereof and movable into and out of engagement with the adjacent end of the body portion of the shuttle and maintained normally in such engagement by a coiled spring 25. The latch-is also equipped with an operating lever 26 pivoted at an intermediate point and having one of its arms con- .stituting a handle and its other arm connected with and adapted to move the pin or bolt 24 rearwardly against the action 'of the spring 25 to open the hinged door or section 22. The hinged door or section when open enables the shuttle to be readily disengaged by the upper and lower flanged rollers and the rubber covered roller to permit the removal of the shuttle for filling the same with glue or other adhesive material.
The interior of the shuttle 13 is hollow except for the gate 22. It forms a receptacle for liquid adhesive material such as liquid glue or the like, a suitable filling opening 27 being provided which is normally closed by a plugor stop. As the shuttle r0 tates the adhesive material is thrown outwardly by centrifugal force and caused to pass through an opening and be applied to the fabric strip in a manner hereinafter de-' scribed. The shuttle, as shown in Fig. '1, rotates in a clockwise direction and the opening through which the adhesive material passes to be applied to the strip is located at the rearend of the hollow interior of the receptacle so that the rotation of the shuttle tends to cause the adhesive material to collect at the end of the shuttle in which the opening is located.
The tire or other article is supported and fed to the wrapping mechanism hereinafter described by the front ortions of thelongitudinal shafts 16 and 1 which are journaled in suitable bearings of. the supporting frame memoria I of the machine. The. front portions 28 and 29 are reduced and the tire or other article is supported and fed by such reduced portions. The reduced portion 28 is located in advance of the strip or ribbon 30 of wrap ping material and in wrapping a tire the tire is engaged at the bead by opposite squeezing rollers 31 and 32 set at an angle or inclination and adapted to engage and interlock with the tire at the base portion thereof for maintaining the tire in a compact con- .dition while the tire is being wrapped. The
rear squeezing roller 31 is permanently mounted on one of the bearings of the longitudinal shaft 16 and the other roller 32 is mounted on a pivot 33 which is carried by a slidable sleeve 34 preferably mounted on the shaft 16'at the reduced portion thereof and maintained in engagement with the tire by a coiled spring 35 interposed between and. whose ends are engaged in the sleeve and the front bearing 36 of the reduced portion 28 and the sleeve 34 for urging the front or outer squeezing roller inwardly or rearwardly. By this means the squeezing roller 32 is maintained in engagement with the tire and is also held against rotary movement on the reduced portion 28 of the shaft 16. I
The fabric strip which may be paper, cloth or any other suitable material, is carried by a spool 36 that is arranged on a rotary spool holder 37 mounted on a horizontal stud or spindle 33 and preferably consisting of a sleeve and an inner plate or flange-39 which isinterposed between the spool-and the adj acent portion. of the shuttle of themachine. The inner end 40' of the spindle is threaded and tapped into the rotary shuttle. The spool is retained on the spool holder by a removable collar 41 and a locking washer 42 but any other suitable device may of course be employed as will be readily understood.
The ribbon of wrapping material is led from the. spoolover a horizontal feed tube 43 constituting a guide for the wrapping material and provided at its outer end with a head or flange 44 and having its inner end 45 threaded and tapped into the rotary shuttle. The inner portion of the tubular guide-43 is provided with-an outlet perforation 46 and the paper or cloth'ribbon or strip is held against the perforation or disehargeorifice by a spring 47 which is also adapted to constitute a closure or valve for the discharge orifice in event of breakage of the wrapping ribbon so that the glue or other adhesive materialwill not leak or waste.
The diameter of the feed tube 43 is reduced gradually for a part of its length near the outer end, being smallest at the base of the collar 44. A roller conforming to the shape of the reduced portion is rotatably mountedon the shaft 71 and is held yieldably against said reduced portion and with axis in the same vertical plane by the spring 72. As the tape 80 is fed to the article or tire to be wrapped the roller 70 coacting with said reduced portion providesa continuous series of crimps or accordion plaits 81, which, as the strip is applied to the article, are
. adapted .to automatically fold or adjust around the tire or other article wraps the same spirally as it unwinds from the roll.

material travels over the discharge aperture, centrifugal force actin on the glue or other adhesive material in t e shuttle throwsthe glue against the edge of the paper and the ribbon of wrapping material is cemented or mented or glued together making practically a one piece wrapper.
In order to enable the charge aperture under theinfiuence of centrifugal force the shuttle is provided with a vent aperture 48 which is closed by a needle valve 49 when the shuttle is stationary. The needle valve which is in the form of a substantially L-shaped lever is pivoted intermediate of its ends at- 50 in a suitable bracket or support and its front portion is. provided with the valve proper while its rear portion is equipped with a weight 52 adapted when the shuttle revolves to move outwardly through centrifugal force and open the valve and permit air to enter the shuttle through the vent opening. As soon as the shuttle stops the valve is automatically closed by a spring 53 which is secured at one end to the weight and has its other end bearing against the shuttle as clearly shown in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings. The weight is adjustable on'the lever to se cure the desired action of the spring and the weight. A cordor wire 54 is fed under the wrapper from an overhead spool 55 journaled in suitable hearings on standards 56 of the supporting frame but any other suitable supporting means may of course be employed for mounting the spool of twine, wire or cord. The cord, wire or twine is bent downwardly from the spool and passes over a guidepulley 57 and is fed to the tire or other article preferably centrally of the tread as illustrated in Fig. 1 of thedrawings." When the clutch is thrown out of op-, eration by the means hereinafter described, the shuttle is engaged by the brake lever fulcrumed at one end at 59 and provided with an engaging portion or shoe 60 and having a rearwardly extending arm which is arod or link 61 with an arm 62 of a roc ,shaft 63 having a treadle 64 moun ed on it and also provided with an arm 65 which is connectedby a link or rod 67 with a clutch shifting lever'68. l The lever 68 is fulcrumed intermediate of its ends at 69 and its upper end is, connected Y with the clutch. I When the clutch is thrown into engagement the brake lever is moved position the brake is applied to the shuttle to stop the latter.
It is to be understood that the structure shown is for purposes of illustration only, and that. many other structures may be de-. vised which embody the invention and which come within the spirit and scope -of the'appendedclaims. i
What we claim is 1 1. A wrapping machine comprising a 1'0? tating shuttle, means secured thereto for carrying a wrapping strip and mechanism secured to the .shuttle for crimping a sheet as it is being applied tothe article wrapped.
2. A ,;wrapping machine comprising rotatable supporting members, a rotatable shuttle, means secured thereto for carrying a thereof and mechanism for applym an a 4 hesive liquid along the edge of e Stl'lp oppositely from the crimps.
4. A machine for wrapping articles comprising meansfor winding a strip of fabric about the article, means for applying an adhesive to said strip as it is being wound to unite the convolutions of the winding and .means for simultaneously crimping the sheet along one edge thereof.
5. A machine for wrapp-rng annular arti cles comprising means for winding a stripof fabric about the article in overlapping .l ayers, and, means for applyin an adhesive,
liquid to said-strip to unite t e overlapping edges of the winding, and means for-yleldi ngly-holding the strip on said means adapted to act as a valve to prevent escape of the adhesive liquid onremoval of the strip.

A machine for wrapping'annular articles comprising a shuttle avlng a reservoir for containing an adhesive liquid, a valve controlled member'for applying the liquid to a strip of wrapping materialand a check valve acting automatically to admit air into the. reservoir when the shuttle rotates and to prevent escape of adhesive liquid when the shuttle is at rest. i
7. A. machine for wrapping annular articles comprising means for winding a strip of fabric about the article, means for plaiting one edge of said strip to cause it to conform to the shape of said articl'e, and means for applying an adhesive to said strip as itis being wound to unite the convolution of the winding.
8. A machine for wrapping annular articles comprising means rotating through the opening in the -annular articles for winding a strip of fabric about the article, and means for crimping one of the edges of said strip to cause said strlp to conform to the shape of the article.

10. A machine for wrapping annular articles comprising means rotating through the opening in the annular article for winding a strip of fabric about-the article, and means for producing plaits or crimps in one edgeof said strip to cause saidstrip to of said article.

In a wrapping machine a revoluble shuttle, means for rotating through the be wrapped, means for applying a wrapping strip to the article and mechanisms rotatable with the shuttle adapted to simultaneously apply an adhesive material to one edge of the wrapping strip and to form plaits and crimps along the opposite edge of the Wrapping strip.
12. In a Wrapping machine means for sup porting androtating an article .to be wrap-.
ped, a rotatable hollow shuttle adapted to contain an adhesive liquid, a valve .controlled outlet for said shuttle over which the wrapping strip passes and an automatically operating vent' valve operated by rotation and stoppage of the shuttle.

In a wrapping machine means for supporting and rotating an article to be wrapped, a rotatable hollow shuttle adapted to contain an adhesive liquid, a valve controlled outlet for said shuttle over which the wrapping strip passes, an automatically operating vent valve operated by rotation and stoppage of the shuttle and a plaiting mechanism carried by the shuttle to form anemia adhesive material, said. receptacle having an outlet over which the fabric passes whereby the adhesive is applied to the fabric as it passes over the-outlet and is wound on the article, and yielding means for holding the fabric strip against the outlet, said means also constituting a valve for closing the outlet. a

A machine for wrapping articles comprising means for winding a strip of fabric around the article and for applying adhesive material to the strip, said means including a rotary shuttle having a hollow interior for the reception of adhesive material and provided with a hollow laterally projecting guide over which the strip is. adapted to pass and which is provided with an opening so that the adhesive material is applied to the fabric as it passes over the guide, said shuttle having a vent therein to permit uniform flow of adhesive material and a valve adapted to be opened by centrifugal force whenthe shuttle is rotating and to automatically close when the shuttle is at rest.

A machine for Wrapping annular ar-, ticles comprising means for winding a strip offabric about the article, means for producing a series of folds or creases in one edge of the fabric to cause it to conform to the shape of the article, said last named means comprising a guide over which the strip passes and from which it is led-to the article at an angle, said guide having a recess atone side thereof and bein provided with means for forcing one e ge of the strip into said recess to produce folds or creases in said edgel 117. In a wrapping machine an annular shuttle having its center clear to permit the rotation of a tire-casing therethrough, means to support and rotate a tire casing throughthe plane of said shuttle, a source of wrapping material mounted on said shuttle; said shuttle being adapted to-wind said material about said casing spirally, and a device mounted on said shuttle adapted to produce a moistened adhesive condition of said wrapping material whereby the successive 1 spiral convolutions of the wrapping material will be adhesively joined to one another.
