IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-PRESSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,660, dated May 6, 1873; application filed e April 3, 1873.

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of printingpresses designed for small work, and generally termed toy-presses and it consists, irst, in a bed in nearly a vertical position, attached to a frame, and a swinging platen pivoted to the frame below, combined with a lever pivoted to the platen, and with trunnions on the said lever, which traverse up and down an inclined surface on the frameto open and close the press; and, secondly, in constructing the chase with a bottom and with projecting ends, so as to be set upon the bed and secured thereto by means of the said projecting ends.

A is the frame, preferably in two parts, arranged near together at the center of the press, `as seen in Fig. 2. Arms B extend up and are attached to or formed upon the bed C. D is the platen, formed with an arm or arms, E, which extend down and are hinged to the frame, as at e, the pivot being arranged relatively to the platen, so that when the platen is thrown up to the bed for the impression it will come parallel with the bed on a line with the surface of the type. In front of the platen arms F extend up, with their inner surface inclined. To the platen one arm, G, of the lever is pivoted, as at g, this lever extending so as to form the handle H. On the lever trunnions or rolls I are arranged, so that when the lever is depressed, as denoted in broken lines, these trunnions will run down the incline, forcing the platen from the arm and towardthe bed, the lever gradually assuming a position at right angles to the said inclined surface, and arriving nearly or quite at right 'angles when the platen has been sufciently far thrown up to produce the impression 5 raising the lever, the plate falls back, as denoted in Fig. 1.

I claim as my inventionl.
