Be it known that I, MoAD H. La MARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety-Catches for Pins and Brooches, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to safety catches for pins and brooches.
It is the object of the invention to provide a safety catch which may be readily formed from a suitable stamped metal blank and a cooperating retaining member also stamped from a metal blank. The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side'elevation of a ing the improved safety catch. The improved safety catch is shown employed in connection with a bar pin consisting of bar 1 having the pin 2 extending lengthwise thereof and pivoted to the bar at the pivot 3. The safety catch is mounted upon bar 1 so as to engage the swinging pointed end 1 of the pin.
The safety catch consists of a catch member forming a hook adapted to engage the pin and a retaining member pivoted with relation to the catch member so as to either close or leave open the end of the hook past which the pin is adapted to move.
The catch is formed from a blank preferably having a straight lower edge 6 and side edges curved at their upper ends inwardly and then downwardly as shown at A substantially heart shaped opening 8 is provided in the blank, said opening forming a depending lip 9 at the medial line of the blank and hook-shaped portions 10 eX- tending in opposite directions from the medial line of the blank and terminating in side uprights 11 which extend to the lower edge 6 of the blank. Depressions 12 are provided in the respective hook-shaped portions 10 of the blank and a projection 13 is formedin' one of the side uprights of the blank, preferably at the side edge thereof.
The blank as thus constructed is adapted to be folded upon its medial line as shown in Fig. 4: so that the side uprights 12 overlie one another and are spaced apart by the projection 13 of one side upright abutting against theopposite side upright. The lip 9 and the hook-shaped portions 10 of the blank will thus form a hook having the recess 14 adapted to receive the pin 2, the open portion of said hook being formed at 15 between the end of lip 9 and the side uprights 11. When the blank is thus folded the depressions 12 is brought into transverse spaced alinements in order to-provide bearmgs.
The retaining member employed in con nection with the catch member as thus constructed consists of a flat metal blank having bearing pins 17 projecting from the opposite surfaces thereof at one end of the blank. The blank is curved from the end carrying pins 17 in order to form a recess 18 adapted to fit around the pin 2 received in the recess of the catch member, and at its opposite end said blank terminates in an end retaining lug 19 adapted to be positioned across the opening 15 of the catch member. A recess 20 is provided in the edge of the retaining member opposite the edge thereof forming recess 18 and a projection 21 adapted to be engaged by the finger is preferably also formed upon said edge of the blank between pivot pins 17 and the recess 20.
In assembling the parts the retaining member is positioned with relation to the blank forming the catch member with one of its pivot pins 17 in one of the bearing depressions 12 and the catch member is then folded over the retaining member as previously described, the retaining member being positioned within the fold of the catch member so that recess 18 cooperates with recess let to provide an aperture through which pin 2 may extend. A safety catch forpins and brooches comprising a blank folded upon itself to form a hook, bearings pressed in the parts of the blankabove the hook-shaped portion thereof, a retaining member pivoted in said bearings so as to swing into and out of position between the parts of the folded blank, said retaining member having a portion that is adapted to close the opening into the hook, a projection pressed inwardly from one of the-parts of the blank for engaging said pivoted member to hold the same in position to close the opening into said hook, and aprojection on the rear side of said hook closing member whereby the latter may be moved into and out of hook closing position.

A safety catch including a blank folded upon itself to form a hook, said folded blank having .a depression forming a projection extending'between' the folds of said-hook, and a retaining member pivoted between the folds of said hook andadapted to be swung into position for closing the opening of said hook, said retaining member being engaged by said projection in open or closed position.
