Description

UNITED STATES LAWRENCE H. HARGIS, OF TEXARKANA, TEXAS.
ROTARY FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application led August 17, 1920. Serial No. 404,099.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LAWRENCE H. HARGIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Texarkana, in the county of Bowie and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Rotary Fountain-Brush,ofwhich the following is a speciication.
My invention is a rotary fountain brush and its all important object resides in the provision of a brush of this character wherein water or other` cleansing agent fed to the brush head serves to rotate the latter.
Further, the invention embodies a rotary brush operated through the medium of a rotor or water wheel that is operated by cleansing liquid on its way through the brush.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages 1n mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts and opcrations to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a brush constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; and l Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view having parts broken away.
Referring in detail to the drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 designates a cylindrical casing or shell in which a water wheel or rotor 6 is revolubly mounted. Extending rea-rwardly from one side of the casing is a tubular handle 7 adapted to be connected with any suitable source of water supply, (not shown).
Cast with the casing or shell 5 and disposed forwardly thereof at one side of the casing is a bearing 8. A hollow substantially rectangular rotatable brush head 'is indicated at 9 and is provided with the usual brush elements or tufts 10 in its bottom wall. This wall is provided with perforations 11 for the passage of water to the surface to be cleaned.
A goose neck 12 communicates with the casing or shell 5 at a point to one side of the handle 7 and has one end extended through the bearing 8 and received in an upstanding hollow shaft or sleeve 13 arranged centrally of the upper wall of the brush head 9 and revolubly mounted in the bearing 8. The upper end of this shaft or sleeve 13 extends above the bearing 8 and is fixed in a central opening 14 in a horizontally arranged worm gear 14 and through which opening the goose neclr 12 extends. The rotor 6 includes a forwardly extending worm shaft 15 meshing with the worin gear 14.
It will be obvious that water or other cleansing fluid passing through the shell or casing 5 from the handle 7 will rotate the rotor 6 and through the medium of the worm shaft and worm gear will rotate the brush head 9. At the same time the water or cleansing fluid will pass out of the casing or shell 5 by way of the goose neck 12 and conducted into the hollow head 9 and discharged over the surface being cleaned.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herein shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure and protect by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
1. A rotating fountain brush comprising a shell provided with a tubular handle adapted to communicate with a liquid supply, a liquid operated rotor in the shell, a bearing arranged forwardly of the shell and disposed to one side of the handle, a perforated brush head, a hollow upstanding shaft carried thereby and received in the bearing, driving means between the rotor and hollow shaft, and a goose neck communicating with the shell at one side and having one end received in the hollow shaft.
2. In a rotary fountain brush a shell having a liquid inlet, a liquid operated rotor journaled in the shell and including a forwardly extending worm shaft, a forwardly arranged bearing carried by the shell, a rotary brush head having a perforated bottom upper end of the hollow vshaft is fixed, and Wall, an upstanding hollow shaft Carried by a goose neck having one end communicating A the brush, and rotatable in the bearing and With the shell at one Vsideand its'opposite 10 having its upper end projecting above the end passing through the opening -in the same, a Worm gear arranged above the bear- Worm gear. ing and driven by the Worm shaft and provided with a central opening in which the y LAWRENCE H; HARGISV.
