WEB-TIGHTENING MECHANISM.

Be it known that we, THOMAS violins and EDWARD LYNTON VICARS, subjects of the King of England, and residing at Earlestown, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented Improvements in or Connected with Web-Tightening Mechanisms, (for which I have filed an application in Great Britain No. 12323, June 80, 1919,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to biscuit or like embossing and cutting machines, and more particularly to web tightening mechanisms thereof, and it consists of special arrangement and construction of web tightening gear, hereinafter described.
In this gear the web is passed over a roller carried on the end of levers or arms mounted or fixed on the spindle of the ordinary web tightening gears; and this spindleand thereby the arms or levers-is rotated or rocked by a worm wheel upon it, actuated by a worm on a spindle extending through a casing in which the worm is placed, and operated from outside by a hand wheel. The whole gear case may or may not be oil tight, and the hand operated wheel may be above or below the box as may be convenient.
The web also passes under another 'oller which may be mounted in the arms fixed on the said spindle, and by raising and lowering the arms the web is tightened or slackened.
These means provide a ready mechanism for adjusting the web tightening devices, and is self locking or self holding, and the adjustment can be very minutely and at the same time, very easily made.
The figure is a partial plan illustrating the application of the web tightening mechanism to a biscuit or like embossing and cutting machine.

the web 3 is passed; and 4 are the arms which are fixed upon the shaft 5 inside the frames 1, and supported in suitable bearings in the frames.
6 represents the wheel which is secured on the shaft 5 outside the frame 1; and 7 is a worm on the spindle 8, which meshes with 6, and operates it; and %1is8the hand operating wheel of the spinc e This gear is inclosed within the casing 10, which is in the form of a cover, and is secured in the frame 1 by bolts or studs, passed through the lugs 11 on the ends of the case; and the upper and lower ends of the spindle 8 pass through bearings formed on the sides of the case.
There are two sets of levers 4 as shown, carrymg their rollers 2, and the web 3 passes over one, and under the other as shown,
and when the shaft 5 is rocked axially by means of the worm gearing described, in the direction for tightening the web, the left hand roller 2 will be raised, lifting the web, and the other roller lowerec depressing it.
By this means, the effects and advantages above specified are accomplished, and the operation required is much more easily effected, and the gear is simple and generally advantageous.

A biscuit or like embossing or cutting machine web tightening mechanism, comprising in combination with the shaft carrying the roller supporting arms or levers, a worm wheel on the said shaft, a worm mounted on a hand operated shaft; a casing inclosing the said worm and worm wheel, and carrying or supporting the said worm spindle, and secured to the machine framing; substantially as set forth.
