Be it known that I, VALTER BARNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing in in the county of Fairfield and State of (lonnecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more especially to the controlling of the ribbon mechanism in such achines. The invention is herein described as applied to an Underwood typewriting machine having aribbon mechanism adapted to write in either of two colors, and also adapted to be made ineffective to permit stencils to be out by the typewriter.
It is a feature of my improvements to be able to set the ribbon mechanism to'one position or another at will, and. to provide means which, when set to a certain position will remain in that position, and if temporaril'y'move'd to another position, for typing characters in a different color, or accidentally, as in cleaning the machine, will automatically return to the set position. The invention is herein shown as applied to the usual bichrome mechanism of the Underwood typewriting machine, whichis so constructed that it may also be used for stencil cutting, and connections are such, as herein disclosed, thattl1eiingenpiece which effects the setting may be positively set to the desired position, and yet have many of the advantages which would result from a yielding connection between the finger-piece and the ribbon mechanism.
Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

In the Underwood typewriting machine, character keys 1, which are mounted on the front ends of key-levers 2, when depressed, carry down bell-cranks to cause type-bars 4 to swing upwardly and rearwardly, so that types 5 on the latter will irint against the front side of the platen 6 through the black stripe T, or the red stripe 8, of the usual ribbon. The ribbon normally stands below the printing point, and is raised tothe printing point at the actuation of a character key, by means of a universal bar 9, which is adapted to be struck by heels 10 on the type-bars as the type-bars approach the platen, with the result that the universal bar is carried rearwardly and lifts the usual ribbon carrier 11.

'F or the purpose of yieldingly holding the finger-piece 24 set in any desired position, the enlarged hub 32 of the finger-piece forms a releasable locking; catch which is adapted to be set in any one of a plurality of openings 33, 34; or 35 in a plate or keeperSGpivotedto the bracket 28 by a suitable screw 37; To enable the finger-piece 24 to be shifted from any one of the openings 33, 34, to any other one, the openings merge into each other by an opening 38 large enough to pass the shaft 22, but smaller than the hub 32. Thus, the finger-piece 245 can be pulled forwardly out of any one of the openings 33, 34-, 35 until its hub is clear of said openings, and then set in any one of the other openings.
The plate 36 is mounted on the pivot 87 so that it may shift. It is, however, normally held in its uppermost position by means of a spring 39 which is anchored in a lug 1.0 of the bracket 28, and draws upon a lug :1 on

It will be noted that when the finger-piece 24 is set at black writing: position, as seen at Fig. 4, it may be pressed down to the point seen in Fig. 5, in which position it will shift the housing 13" so that the wall l iwill engage its pin 16, but the instant pressure is released, the finger-piece 2 iwi-ll be drawn back with the plate to the Fig. i position. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine having polychrome printing means, the combination with a link adapted to vary the color, of a shaft adapted to be moved transversely to rock it to shift the color-controlling link, a spring normally holding said shaft, but adapted to permit it to be moved endwise, and a plate comprising a series of openings adapted to hold the shaft when drawn thereinto by the spring.

In a typewriting machine having polychrome printing means, the combination of means for varying the color, comprising a member movable todiilerent positions corresponding to diiierent colors, means including a rock-shaft for moving said member tovary the color, a fingerpiece for rocl ing the rock-shaft, and means in control of the fingerpiece comprising a pivoted keeper-plate mounted for limited movement in the same direction as the finger-piece and provided along a line of its movement with a plurality of catch-receiving openings, a releasable locking catch carried by the finger-piece to have locking engagement in said openings, and a spring for yieldingly maintaining said keeper-plate at one of its limited positions of movement, whereby the keeper-plate and with it the finger-piece will be automatically returned to their original positions when moved away therefrom, but providing for'locking the finger-piece away from its original position when desired.
