Be it known that I, JOHN BENJAMIN SPARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raven, in thecounty of Tazewell and State of Virginia, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Coal-Gar-Check Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being hadto-the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to coal car check holders and has for its object to provide a device of this character capable of being rapidly applied to any form of coal car such as used in mines and adapted to efliciently protect the checks from damage or loss.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein a plurality of hooks are disposed within the holder for the reception of checks, the entrance to the hooks being restricted so as to prevent disengagement of the checks therefrom when the car is in motion.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character where in the holder is not only adapted to receive the coal car checks, but may also receive other articles such as mail without interfering with the hooks supporting thechecks.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character having novel means for fastening the cover of the device which also serves as holding means for the checks.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a casing constructed preferably of metal, said casing including a front wall 6, rear wall 7 and end walls 8. The bottom 9 of the casing, is provided with an extension 10 which projects beyond the outer surface of the wall 6 to provide a foot by means of which the casing 5 may be secured to the car, said extension being provided with a plurality of openings 11 for the reception of fastening means. By this novel arrangement, the box can be conveniently attached to thecar as the flange projects outwardly of the casing Specification of Letters Patent.

The extremity of the bill is rounded so as to permit the checks to be readily applied to the hook and at the same time restrict the opening or entrance 15 so that a large number of checks may be applied to the hook'without danger of the same becoming disengaged therefrom and falling to the bottom of the casing. In this way, the checks are always held within convenient reach. The end 16 of the hook is tapered and adapted to extend through one of a plurality of openings 17 formed in the walls of the casing 5. The opening 17 is smaller than the diameter of the shank 1% so as to permit only the tapered end 16 to pass therethrough. he tapered end 16is then riveted or headed to secure the hook within the casing 5. By this means, the end 16 is firmly wedged within the opening 17. These hooks are intended to project from the wall 6 and one of the walls 8 inwardly of the casing and in spaced relation to the bottom thereof so as not to interfere with articles resting on the bottom. A length of wire 18, is laced from the front wall 6 to the rear wall 7, the sections of the wire being disposed in spaced relation to each other and in vertical .alinement to form a partition.

By this means the end wall cooperates with the wires to provide a compartment in which letters and the like may be placed and properly held in position without coming in contact with the checks or other articles placed within the casing.

A cover 19 is hinged at one edge thereof to the wall 7, the end and front edges of the cover being provided with flanges 20. Carried by the cover 19 is a novel hasp member 21 which extends over the flange 20 carried by the front edge of the cover and has its opposite end formed into a loop 22 adapted to engage a keeper 28 projecting from the wall 6 of the casing. In order to lock the cover to the casing, a novel bolt is provided, said bolt consisting of a length of material having one end formed into a hook 24:, and having its intermediate portion extending through an opening provided in the wall 6. The opposite end of the bolt is extended into engagement with the inner surface of the wall 6 and then upwardly to provide a hook 25 adapted to receive coal car checks. In this way, the bolt serves two purposes. Carried by the end portion of the bolt exteriorly of the casing 5, is a finger piece 26 by means of which the bolt may be oscillated to extend the same through the keeper 23. The finger piece 20 is pivoted to the boltso that when withinthe casing, cover hinged to the easing, a hasp carried by the cover, a keeper carried by the front Wall-of the casing and a locking bolt having its intermediate portion extending throughthe front Wall of the casing, the inner'end of the bolt being formed into a hook adapted to hold a check, the outer end of thebolt being formed into a bill for securing the hasp to the keeper.
