Be it known that I, VVILLrAM M. BRIGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Prick-Punching Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to what might be conveniently considered a prick-punchingtool. The implement may be used on sheet-metal and any other proper material and in some cases instead of the punch tool merely making an impression upon the stock it may go entirely through. I have a number of objects in view among them being the provision of a device of the character set forth by which the desired results can be obtained in a quick and an accurate manner and practically without the use of a scale, square and divider ordinarily utilized in prick-punching. By the use of the implement I not only accurately and precisely space the distance between centers of holes to be drilled for instance in straight work but can also locate the prick-punches accurately from the edge. By the article I can secure single, double or offset prick-punches in straight work and can prick-punch round stock up to a certain size with exact precision and extreme accuracy.
In the drawings accompanying and form ing part of the present application I have shown in detail a form of embodiment of the invention which to enable those skilled in the art to practise the same will be set forth fully in the following description. I am obviously not restricted to this showing. I may depart therefrom in several respects within the scope of the invention defined by the claims following said description.

In that form of embodiment of the invention which I have selected for illustration in Figs. 1 and 2 the tool comprises a base or Specification of Letters Patent.

body member as 2 which may be made in any suitable fashion. For instance it'might be either cast or drop-forged. This base or body 2 has at one end the straight edge 3 which is used in prick-punching straight work. At the other end the base or body has anaperture or recess 4 to adapt the base or body for use in connection with round stock. The sides of this aperture or recess 4 as shown are at an angle of 45 to each other.
As represented the base or body portion 2 has longitudinally of it, the channel or groove 5 which is adapted to receive the slide bar 6 which can be made in any convenient manner for instance by drop-forging. As shown the slide bar has graduations 7 along one edge and which function as I will hereinafter more particularly set forth. The slide bar 6 as shown has at one extremity the head 8 which has a central hole intended to receive a prick-punching tool. This head 8 has on its inner side the lug 9 perforated'to slidingly receive the index rod 10 which as will be clear is longitudinally adjustable and which is suitably held in an adjusted position as by a set screw 11 tapped through the lug. The screw 11 is assumed to be set in Fig. 1. By loosening it, the rod 10 may slide in either direction toward the left or right to longitudinally adjust it and whenit is adjusted, the screw 11 will be again set.
As shown the index rod extends through the T-shaped block 12 the parts being maintained in an adjusted relation for instance by the screw 13 tapped through one portion of said block 12 the other portion thereof slidingly receiving the index rod 14. The block 15 is slidable 0nthe index rod 14 for the purpose of adjustment and is furnished with a. screw 16 for engaging said rod, to hold it in adjusted relation thereon. rod 14 it will be perceived is at right angles to the rod 10. The block 15 has an opening 17 to receive a prick-punching tool when the prick-punches are to be offset. Removably attached as by screw-threading to the index rod 10 is the index piece 18, the rod 10 having threads at its ends to interchangeably receive the index piece 18.
The slide bar 6 has fitted over it the clamping member 19, one end portion of which has passing through it the screw 20 tapped into the body 2, and the other end portion of which has tapped through it the thumb screw 21. By loosening the thumb screw 21 the slide bar 6 will be released and The can be adjusted longitudinally and when the adjustment is effected the thumb screw will be set to hold the slide bar ri idly against accidental movement.
It will be assumed that it is desired to punch in the stock 22 a series of holes as 23 in line with each other longitudinally of the stock 2 these holes to be definite distances apart and a definite distance rom the lower edge as shown of the stock. In this event the following procedure will be adopted. The thumb screw 21 will be loosened and the slide bar 6 longitudinally adjusted to bring the center of the hole 241 through the head 8 into coincidence with the line of punches which is to be produced. lVhen this is done the slide bar 6 will be held in its adjusted position by means of the screw 21. This determines the distance that the line of holes to be punched should be from the lower edge of the stock or work 22. The distance between the holes is determined through the adjustment of the index piece 18 which is accomplished by loosening the screw 11 when the index rod 10 can be adcenter at a distance from the center of the hole 24 which should be the distance between the punch-pricks or holes 23. After the first hole is punched thecenter of the straight edge 25 will be brought into coincidence with the first right hole 23 which has been punched and at this time a punch is introduced into the hole 2 1 and struck a blow to form a second prick-punch in the stock. This operation is continued until the line of punches-has been made.
To make staggered or offset punches the block 15 is adjusted on'the rod 14:, the necessary distance which is to occur between the lines of punches and when'this adjustment is obtained the set screw 16 will be operated to hold the block 15 in its adjusted position on the rod 1 1, at which time the block 12 is adjusted on the rod 10 the necessary amount that the upper line of unches is to be spaced from the lower line of punches.
In Figs; 3 and 1 I show the base 2 with exactly the same adjuncts with which it is equipped in the other construction. In this use of the article the position of the slide bar 6 is reversed so that the head 8 sets in the opening or recess 4 in which round stock as 26 is to be received and to be acted on by a punch operating throu h the hole or opening 24 in said head 8. The lug or ear 9 of course is present and is equipped with the set screw 11 although the lug and screw perform no functions. The graduated scale 7 is also present. The slide bar 6 is longitudinally adjustable and is held in its adjusted position by the clamping member 19 main tained in fixed position by the screws 20 and 21 the latter being as shown a thumb screw.
It will be understood that the prickpunching tool in some cases can cut entirely through the stock and in this event the stock would be perforated. It will be seen that the index piece 18 has two gage surfaces one of which is denoted by 25 the other of which is designated by 25. (See Fig. 2.) Either one of these surfaces can be employed so that the index piece 18 can be used both right and left handed.
What I claim is:.
1. An implement of the class described comprising a base, a graduated slide connected with the base for adjustment, means for holding the slide in an adjusted position, an indexing rod slidable transversely of the slide, the slide having an opening and the indexing rod having an index member which cooperates with the opening, and a second rod slidably connected with the first rod for movement transversely thereof and provided with a part having an opening to receive a prick-punching tool.
2. An implement of the class described comprising a base having a straight edge, a graduated slide connected with the base for adjustment longitudinally thereof and terminating in a part having an opening to receive a prick-punching tool, a clamping member to hold the slide in an adjusted position on the base, an indexing rod slidable transversely of the slide and carried thereby.
the rod having an index piece connected herewith which cooperates with the opening in the slide, a rod adjustably connected with and transverse to the other rod, a block carried by the last mentioned rod and having an opening to receive a prick-punching tool, and means for holding the last mew tioned block in an adjusted position on its rod.
