MAGNETO-DRIVING ARRANGEMENT FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR VILLIAM ALL. a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain. residing at The Laurels, Lyndon End. Sheldon, near Birmingham, in the county of lVarwick, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful improvements in or Relating to Magneto-Driving Arrangements for Internal-Combustion En gines, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
This invention comprises certain improvements in or relating to internal-combustion engines, and it refers particularly to the driving provision for the magneto and distributor.
According to the present invention, a toothed wheel is incorporated concentrically with the crank end of the connecting rod. This toothed wheel is in mesh with a toothed wheel rotating concentrically with the crankshaft. The toothed wheel concentric with the crank end of the connecting rod may be fixed to the latter. Alternatively, it may be in mesh with an internally toothed ring which is anchored. By these arrangements the toothed wheel which is concentric with the crankshaft may rotate at twice or four times the speed of the crankshaft. This tooth wheel may be adapted to drive the armature of the magneto which is thereby driven at twice or four times the speed of the crankshaft. The distributor may be mount ed upon the crankshaft, and by this arrange ment spark may be taken at each quarter revolution of the distributor, this spark occurring at each half revolution of the magneto armature.
In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended ex: planatory drawing, which illustrates an embodiment of the present invention, and in which the crankshaft is shown constructed as described in my concurrent application No. 268,546, in which the crank-arm is composed of disks (5, a, each furnished with pressed eccentric bosses 5, Z), said disks being combined with other disks 0, 0 also formed with pressed central bosses d, d, these parts being effectively secured together. 6' is the connecting rod composed of two stampings, as described in my application No. 268,545, said stampings having at the crank end pressed bosses f, g. The boss 9 is stepped and has secured around its reduced part a toothed pinion IL. This pinion 72, is is mesh with a pinion i secured to the shaft j of the magneto armature. 7c is a bearing sleeve for said shaft j, said bearing sleeve being secured within the boss (Z of a disk 0, and a similar boss Z of a disk m constituting the distributor. The bosses cl, Z are at their proecting extremities formed with dogs which interengage, and said bosses are connected together by the bearing sleeve 70. The distributer plate on thus rotates with the crank. 'n is a bearing between the crankshaft and the crank casing 0. 79 is a plate or member which may be secured or clipped around the projecting boss-like part of the crank casing which encircles the bearing n. This plate 1) may involve four stationary contacts which successively come into contact with a single contact with which the distributor m is provided. The single contact upon said distributor on also successively comes into contact with two contacts appertaining to the magneto armature.
The magnet may be mounted in a support which may be formed integrally with the crank-case.
In the embodiment shown, the obliquity of the connecting rod has the effect of imparting to the gear during the cycle of rotation, an alternately accelerating and decelerating speed to the shaft of the armature. If desired, this may be avoided by arranging that the wheels 71, 2'. are slightly eccentric with the axes about which they rotate, the major radius of the one wheel being adapted to mesh with the minor radius of the other wheel.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A magneto driving mechanism for internal combustion engines, including in combination with the rotating part of the magneto a crank shaft, a connecting rod secured to said crank shaft, a pinion secured to said connecting rod, and a second pinion on said rotating part coaxial with said crank shaft and meshing with said first named pinion.
