GEORGE B. BARNES AND JAMES A. LEASURE, OF BELLAIRE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SlFTERS, MIXERS, AND GRINDERS FOR GLASS-STOCK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,554, dated May 6, 1673; application filed March 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE E. BARNES and JAMES A. LEASURE, of Bellaire, in the county of Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Glass-Stock Sifter, Grinder, and Mixer, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention consists of an inclined reciprocating screen with a pair of crushing-rolls, arranged inside of a removable case, which is closed except at the bottom, so that the mate-- rial which is thrown into a hopper will be received in the screen at one end, to have the coarser matters separated from the finer, and delivered to the crushing-rolls from the lowermost end of the sieve, to be ground and prepared suitably for mixing with the finer portions which go through the screen. The rolls are geared together and worked by a handcrank, and the screen is worked by a crankshaft driven by a belt worked by a pulley on the hand-crank shaft. The machine is also useful for screening sand for making mortar, to separate the coarse gravel, one roll being removed so that the gravel will merely be delivered over the other roll to be separated from the sand and not crushed, and we propose to arrange it so that one roll can be readily detached.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of our improved machine. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cover removed, the sections being taken on the line .90 m. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 1.

A represents a bench or frame, of any suitable construction, in oblong shape, with a removable cover, U, under which is a sieve or screen, D, arranged on inclined ways E to slide forward and back, and connected by a rod, F, with the crank-shaft which is driven by a belt, H, which works from the pulley I, to the shaft of which the driving-crank J, or other contrivance for driving the machine, is applied, and on which one of a pair of crushing-rolls, K L, is mounted, said rolls being arranged under the discharging-end of the sieve so as to receive the course matters delivered over the end and crush them suitably to mix with the finer portions which fall through the sieve in advance of the roll. M is an opening through the top of the cover over the rolls, with a slide door, which may be opened, when required, to remove any large pieces that will not pass between the rolls. .N is a hopper, over an opening, 0, through the top of the case, above the upper end of the sieve, into which the matters to be treated are fed to the sieve, being shoveled into the hopper.
We may use two or more sieves, one above another; also two or more sets of rolls. The cover prevents the lime dust from rising up in the air and troubling the workmen.
The lime and soda used in the manufacture of glass often contain lumps which are unfit for working up without being pulverized before or while mixing, which has heretofore been done by hand with a hoe or spade, in the ordinary way of mixing mortar, which is very slow and tedious, and requires several hours for a batch of one ton, which can be done in a very few minutes by this machine.
As a substitute for the stationary screen for sifting sand for mortar by repeatedly shoveling the sand against it, this machine, with the roll L removed, will be found very useful, also economical in respect of time and labor.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of the reciprocating inclined screen D and crushing-rolls K L, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the removable cover G and hopper N with the inclined reciprocating screen'and the crushing-rollers, substantially as specified.
GEO. B. BARNES. JAMES A. LEASURE.
