D ROY FRICK, OF HIGHLAND, MISSOURI.
TOY HORSE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, D ROY FnroK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rich- ,land, in the county of Pulaski and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatestohobby horses and has for its object the provision of a toy horse which is mounted for rocking movement upon a carriage or frame equipped with wheels, the device being soconstructed that when thehorse is rocked back and forth the wheels will be turned so that the device will be propelled.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character in which novel means is provided for converting the rocking movement of the horse into rotary movement of the wheels.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is provided with means of novel construction whereby it may be steered.
An additional object is the provision of a toy of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, not likely to get out of order, highly efficient and entertaining in use, durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
Vith the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of constructionto be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,
Fig. 2' is arear elevation,
Fig. 3 is a front elevation,
Fig. 4 is a plan view, and
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral designates a rectangular supporting platform which is formed as a board or plank. Rising from the rear end of the platform 10, are upright supports 11 through which is journaled a shaft 12 carrying relatively large wheels 13 which in actual practice are referably rubber tired.
Secured upon the forward end of the platform are yokes 14 which extend beyond the sides of the latform and include cars 15 and bars 16 disposed immediately above the ears 15. The ears 15 and bars 16 are in tween the bodies 17 of spindles 18 upon Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 1 119 1921 Application flle fi June 22,
1920. serial n 390,751.
which are rotatably mounted front wheels 19. The spindle bodies 17 carry arms 20 which. are connected by a rod 21 so thatthe front wheels may be moved in unison by the means to be hereinafter described.
Secured at the front end of the platform are uprights 22. Associated with these uprights 22 is a rocking member 23 formed as a Ushaped hanger having a shaft 24 journaled through the upper ends of the uprights 22. Associated with the uprights 1 1 is a similar U-shaped hanger 0r rocking member 25 having its arms journaled upon the rear shaft 12.
Pivoted upon the shaft 12 are arms 26 and '27, the former of which is connected by a link 28 with the rear rocker 25, and the latter of which is connected by a link 29 with the forward hanger or rocker 23. The arms 26 and 27 carry pawls 30 which engage a ratchet 31 carried by. the rear shaft .12.
The numeral 31 designates a body which is formed as the representation of an animal,
preferably a horse, and this body includes rear legs 32 disposed upon the rear rocking member 25 and secured thereto by suitable clips 33. The body further includes front legs 34 disposed upon the front rocking member23 and held. associated therewith by similar clips 35.
The body 31 is provided with a head 36 which is rigidly secured to a substantially vertical shaft 37 j ournaled through the body adjacent the front legs and also journaled through a bracket 38 secured at the top of the body. The head is provided with suitable reins 39 which extend adjacent a saddle 40 mountedupon the bodyand preferably equipped with stirrups 41. Connected with the lower end of the shaft 37 by a universal joint 42, is a short shaft 43 angular in cross section and slidably engaged within a 1101- low shaft 44 which is connected by a universal joint 45 with the vertical portion 46 of an L-shaped member which includes a hori zontal arm 47 pivotally connected with a link 48 in turn connected with a knuckle 49 carried by the arm 20 of one spindle body. The vertical portion 46 of this L-shaped member is journally mounted through the platform.
In the operation of the device the rider sits upon the saddle 40 with his feet within the stirrups 41 and grasps the reins 39. The rider then swings the horse back and forth in the same manner as any hobby horse,
whereupon the arms 26 land 27 will be rocked back and forth over the ratchet Wardly and at every backward movement of the horse the resultant downward and forward movement of the pawls will result in partial rotation of the rear wheels, as
will be obvious. In order to steer the defvice from one side to the other, it is merely necessary that the rider pull upon the reins 39 in the desired direction whereupon the resultant turning of the head will cause rotation of the shaft 37, telescopic shaft members 43 and 4A, and swinging movement of the horizontal arm 47 and this will cause the front wheels to be correspondingly moved.
7 From vthe foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and easily operated hobby horse which will progress as it is swung and which will be highly entertaining and amusing in use while providing excellent exercise. 7
I While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a support, rear wheels journaled thereon, a ratchet associated with the rear wheels, a U-shaped rocking member mounted for rocking movement at the rear end of said support, arms pivoted at the rear end of the support, pawls carried by said arms and engaging said ratchet, a U- shaped rocking member mounted upon the forward end of the frame and connected with oneof said arms, front wheels carried by the forward end of the frame, and a body formed as the representation of an animal including legs supported upon said rocking members whereby when the body is rocked said pawls will impart rotary movement to said rear wheels.
2. A device of the character described comprising a supporting platform, rear wheels journaled thereon, a ratchet associated with the rear wheels, a Ushaped rocking member mounted for rocking movement at the rear end of said platform, arms pivoted at the rear end of the frame upon thejournal of said wheels, pawls carried by said arms and engaging said ratchet, a rocking member mounted upon the forward end of the platform, front wheels carried by the forward end of the platform, and a body formed as the representation of an animal including legs supported upon said rocking members whereby when the body is rocked said pawls will impart rotary movement to said rear wheels, a portion of the body being relatively movable and connected with said front wheels whereby to effect steering.
3. A device of the character described comprising an elongated supporting platform, dirigible front wheels mounted there on, a shaft journaled at the rear of the platform, rear wheels on said shaft, a ratchet carried by said shaft, a member mounted for rocking movement at the rear end of the platform, a rocking member mounted at the forward end of the frame, arms pivoted upon said shaft and one be ing connected with said forward rocking member, pawls on said arms engaging said ratchet, a body formed as the representation of ahorse having its forward and rear legs mounted upon said rocking members. and means for moving said dirigible wheels.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
I) ROY FRICLK.
