Description

UNITED STAIES PATENT OFFICE.
FOSTER MILLIKEN, OF LAWRENCE, NEW YORK ASSIGNOR TO FOSTER MILLIKEN',
S. FULLERTON WEAVER, AND JAMES M: BEPBLIER, AS TRUSTEES.
ALLOY.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FOSTER MILLIKEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lawrence, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented 'a new and Improved Alloy, of which the following is 'a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to alloys containing aluminum and lead as the principal ingredinamely: i Aluminum 89 to 94 per Cent. Lea-d 5 to 10 and a trace'of an oxidizing material such as metallic magnesium.
In practice, the aluminum and the lead are mixed while'in a moltenstate and about 1 &
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J l 1 9 192 1920. Serial No. 383,888.
to 2 per cent. of metallic magnesium is added to deoxidize or purify both the alum num and the lead with a trace of the oxidizing material being incorporated in the alloy and the remainder paming away with the slag.
It is understood that aluminum alloys as now generally formed are porous and one of the properties of my improved alloy as herein set forth is its increased density owing to the use of the purified lead and the purified aluminum.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An alloy containin aluminum, lead, and an oxidizing agent, t e aluminum and the lead being in a purified state and in proportion substantially as specified, the said oxidizing agent bein a portion of 1 to 2 per cent. of the deoxi izing agent used as the medium for urifying the said aluminum and the said ead and remaining as an in tegral part of the alloy after purification of the said aluminum and lead,'the said alloy being characterized by increased density, ability to withstand pressure and high resistance to corrosion. 1
