CLOSURE FOR JARS, BOTTLES, AND OTHER RECEIPTACLES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALFRED INGRAM and HARRY INGRAM, citizens of the United States. and residents of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invent edcertain new and useful Improvements in Closures for Jars, Bottles, and other Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention pertains more particularly to closures of the class commonly designated as crown caps, and the purpose of the invention is to provide a crown cap of a construction and containing within its peripheral portion a gasket adapted to assure an effectual seal.
In accordance with our invention the cap comprises a top, a downwardly extending skirt portion which affords an annular recess or groove to hold a gasket, and a downwardly and outwardly deflected fluted flange at the lower edge of said skirt portion to be crimped below a shoulder on the neck of a bottle or other receptacle. The gasket which we apply to the cap is of special formation, in that it is initially a circular, sub stantially vertical, ring or band having a flat outer wall, a substantially flat upper edge and an inner wall which in its upper part is parallel with the said outer wall and in its lower part has a tapered portion which diverges downwardly and outwardly to the lower edge of the annular recess within the peripheral portion of the cap and which tapered portion normally stands within the vertical plane of the upper edges of the bottle or other receptacle to which the closure is to be applied so that the gasket may be deformed by the application of the cap to the bottle and enter into sealing engagement throughout an extended zone with the upper outer surfaces surrounding the mouth of the bottle.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the drawings, 10 designates the neck of a bottle, 11 the contents of the bottle, 12 a crown cap applied or to be applied over the mouth of the bottle, and 13 a ring-gasket within the peripheral portion of said cap to seal or sealing against the outer surfaces 14,15 surrounding the lip or mouth of the bottle.
The neck 10 in addition to having outwardly convexed surfaces 14 has downwardly diverging surfaces 15, and is also formed with an annular shoulder 16 located reasonably below the lip of said neck.
The cap 12 is formed of sheet metal and comprises a top 17, a downwardly extending skirt portion 18, and at the lower edge thereof an outwardly flared fluted or corrugated flange 19. At the juncture of the portions 18, 19 the metal is indented inwardly along an annular line forming a shoulder 20. which, with the skirt portion 18 and the top of the cap, create an annular groove or recess 21 extending around the indownwardly and outwardly to the shoulder 20 of the cap and which portion 23. with the adjacent portions of the inner wall of the gasket. normally stand in the vertical plane of the outer portions of the neck of the bottle to which the cap is to be applied, so that upon the application of the cap over the mouth of a bottle said gasket becomes greatly deformed, being forced against the walls of the groove 21 and against the surfaces 14, 15 of the bottle neck with efficient sealing effect.
The normal relation of the cap and gasket to each other is illustrated in Figs. 3 aud t, and'upon the application of the cap and gasket to the neck of a bottle and the foreing inwardly of the shoulder 20 below the shoulder 16 on the neck of a bottle, the gasket takes the deformed condition shown in Figs. 1 and 5, in which it will be seen that the gasket has lost its original shape and extends along the inner surfaces of the groove or recess 21 and:along a considerable area of the surfaces 14, 15 of the bottle neck, thereby creating a sealin zone of large area extending from the shou der 16 up over the upper outer edges of the lip of the bottle.
The cap and gasket shown in Fig. 6 are the same as the cap and gasket shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. In Fig. 6 we number the neck of the bottle 25, and the mouth of the neck 25 differs from the mouth of the neck 10 in that the surfaces surrounding the same are continuously convexed outwardly and downwardly, as at 26, in lieu of having the upper convex surface 14 and substantially fiat diverging surface 15 shown in Fig. 5. Our invention is equally applicable to a bottle having the surfaces 14, 15 about its mouth or the surface 26 about its mouth, and obviously the surface outline about the mouth of the bottle may be otherwise modified. We prefer the formation illustrated in Fig. 5 as affording an extended and very efficient sealing zone.
We call attention'to the fact that in accordance with our invention the cap and gasket are of such relative proportions that the top of the cap engages the rim of the mouth of the bottle and that a commodious space is left between the outer surfaces of the mouth of the bottle and the skirt of the cap for securing an effective seal with the use of the gasket, which is a flat band and extends downwardly to the lower edge of the skirt of the cap, terminating adjacent to the shoulder 20, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4, whereby a very substantial and important side seal is secured. The annular groove or recess 21 in the outer vertical peripheral portion of the cap is important in permitting us to employ, in a crown cap, a gasket 13 of the character shown, and said groove receives and retains the gasket prior to the application of the cap to the bottle, so that when the caps are in stock the parts thereof are in assembled relation. In accordance with our invention a very extended side sealing zone is created, and the efficiency of the cap is further emphasized by the provision oftthe surfaces 14, 15 of the character hereinbefore described surrounding the side of the mouth of the bottle.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A crown cap having a top, a skirt portion, an inwardly extending shoulder at the lower edge thereof, creating an annular vertical recess around the outer peripheral portion of the cap, and a flange below said shoulder to be crimped upon a bottle neck,
and a gasket within the skirt portion of said cap above said shoulder, said gasket normally having an outer wall engaging said skirt portion, an upper edge engaging the top of the cap, and an inner wall having a downwardly and outwardly diverging lower edge and normally standing in the path of the surfaces surrounding the mouth of the bottle to which the cap is to be applied, and said gasket being a vertical band extending along said recess from the top of the cap to a Joint adjacent .to the shoulder at the lower e ge of said recess, the top of the cap when in sealing position engaging the rim of the mouth of the bottle.
2. In combination with a receptacle h'aving an external shoulder about its mouth, a crown cap for said receptacle having a top, a skirt portion and a normally inwardly extending shoulder to be engaged with said shoulder on the receptacle, and said cap also being formed in its outer vertical peripheral portion with an annular vertical recess extending from the top of the cap downwardly to said shoulder, and a gasket-within the skirt portion of said cap normally having an outer wall engaging said skirt portion, an upper edge engaging the top of the cap, and an inner wall having a downwardly and outwardly diverging lower edge and normally standing in the path of the surfaces surrounding the mouth of the receptacle, and said gasket being a vertical band extending along said recess from the top of the cap to a point adjacent to the shoulder at the lower edge of said recess.
3. In combination with a receptacle having an external shoulder about its mouth, a crown cap for said receptacle having a top, a skirt portion and a normally inwardly extending shoulder to be engaged with said shoulder on the receptacle, and said cap also being formed in its outer vertical peripheral portion with an annular vertical recess extending from the top of the cap downwardly to said shoulder, and a gasketwithin the skirt portion (f said cap normally having an outer wall engaging said skirt portion, an upper edge engaging the top of the cap,
and an inner wall having a downwardly and outwardly diverging lower edge and normally standing in the path of the surfaces surrounding the mouth of the receptacle, the surfaces on the receptacle surrounding the mouth thereof extending outwardly and downwardly and affording a sealing zone for said gasket, and said gasket being a vertical band extending along said recess from the to of the cap' to a oint adjacent to the shoul er at the lower e ge of said recess.
4. In combination with a receptacle hav ing an external shoulder about its mouth, a
crown cap for said receptacle having a top,' a skirt portion and an inwardly extending shoulder'to be engaged with said shoulder on the receptacle, and said cap also being formed in its outer vertical peripheral portion with an annular vertical recess extending from the top of the cap downwardly to said shoulder, and a gasket within the skirt portion of said cap normally having an outer wall engaging, said skirt portion, an upper edge engaging the top of the cap, and an inner wall having a downwardly and outwardly diverging lower edge and normally standing in the path of the surfaces surrounding the mouth of the receptacle, the surfaces surrounding the mouth of the receptac-le being convexed outwardly and downwardly at their 11 per portions and then diverged downwar ly and outwardly and affording an extended sealing zone for said gasket, and said gasket being a vertical band extending along said recess from the top of? the cap to a. point adjacent to the shoulder at the lower edge of said recess.
A receptacle closure comprising a cap having a depending skirt portion affording an annular recess for a gasket, and a gasket adapted. when placed on a receptacle, to be deformed into and fill said recess, and said receptacle at its mouth portion being adapted to pass through said gasket on the appli cation of the cap carrying the same thereto, the neck of the receptacle being formed with a shoulder and the depending skirt of the cap with a crimped portion flaring outwardly and downwardly from the shoulder of the neck.
