J. B. SMITH.
STRMNER FOR TEAPOTS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 1B. 1920.

Application led May 18,
To all fr/wm- ?t may concern.'
lle it. known that l, JOHN Bestnr SMITH, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 'T Stamford Grove East.7 Stamford Hill. in the county of London, England, have invented certain `new and useful improvements in Strainers for Teapots, of which the following a speci iication.
lily invention relates to a new or improved straining attachment for tea-pots and the like and has for its object the provision of a simple device associated with the spout of the vessel whereby a better straining eli'ect is obtained and the use of an outside strainer which is liable to become mislaid is obviated.
according to this invention l provide a perforated disk or plate which is placed within the tea-pot. or the like and has a suitable clip or fastener by means of which it can be readily secured to the usual perforated partition or outlet between the tea-pot body and the spout.
ln carrying out my invention the perforated diskis preferably of some suitable metal such as tinplate, copper or silver, the pertorations being of any size according to the type of v esel to which the strainer is applied and other circumstances. T his disk or plate is sur'ciently large to completely lit over the perforated partition or outlet before referred to, and is preferably dished or formed with a surrounding and projecting rim which thus provides a snug lit against the inner surface of the tea-pot or the like and prevents the passage of tealeaves to the spout when it is in position.
Means for readily securing the strainer in position over the outlet conveniently, comprise a. length of wire secured to the perforated disk or plate in any suitable manner and extending at about right angles to the plane of the disk on the same side as the rim thereon. This wire is of a springy nature and after extending outwardly to the desired extent is bent over upon itself and formed with a pair of projecting shoulders and a neck in close proximity to the disk. The wire also projects beyond the opposite face of the disk and is formed in the manner of a loop or the like, which is adapted to be taken between the lingers to facilitate easy insertion in the vessel when securing. To effect securing, the outer end of the spring wire which is tapered is engaged in one of the usual holes or perforations in the parti- Specification of Letters atent.

tion or outlet. rlhe disk is now pressed inward toward the outlet until the spring shoulders are compressed in the perforation. Continued movement will bring the shoulders clear of the perforation on the other eide of the partition and as soon as they are free they will spring outward and so hold the disk in position, the neck then being situated in the perforation. The disk can be readily removed for cleaning or renewal by a simple inward pull on the wire loop.
ln order that my invention may be more readily understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which like let` ters of reference refer as far as possible to like parts throughout.
Figure l is a fragmentary view in section showing one form of Jthe device.
F ig. 2 is a fragmentary view in section showing another form of the device.
Fig. 3 is a rear view of the device seen from the interior of a tea pot.
Fig. il: is a fragmentary view in sectional side elevation showing the device in position in a tea pot. Y
Fig. 5 is a rear view on an enlarged scale. Fig. G is a side view on an enlarged scale.
l shows my invention in its simplest 'form in which l employ a spring wire bent to form a shoulder and continued for a required distance to a narrow end from which it is returned and a similar shoulder is formed to the one before mentioned and the wire bent to form a neck, and passes through perforated metal disk and terminates with a loop. rlie perforated metal disk which acts as a strainer is secured in any suitable way to the wire and preferably a metal clip holds the two portions of the wire together. ln this ligure the wire referred to is termed as a loop at c1 passing through the perforate metal disk or strainer o forming part of the neck c2 and is then bent into a shoulder a? and continued to a tapered end et, andrlthen returns and forms another shoulder h5 and terminates in a straight piece a. completing the neck part. The free end of the wire is preferably clipped to the other part of the wire by a small band c7 and between this band and the loop el the perforated metal disk or strainer may be secured in any suitable manner.
F ig. 2 shows to a slightly enlarged scale a portion of my improved device in a modified form in which the loop wire el to manipulate the iitting of the device to the tea-pot,
is formed separately from the spring shaped part as before described, the tWo Wires being clipped together by the srnallband a7.
Fig. 3 shows a front elevation ,looking from the inside of the tea-pot to the spout of my improved strainer fitted in one of the perfor-ations in the body of the tea-pot, and
Fig. 4 shows a section ofthe tea-pot and -spout with the strainer fixed in position to cover the outlet perfo'rations in the teapot communicating` with the spout, and
Figs. 5 and G are respectively front elevation and side elevation to an enlarged scale of my improved strainer in the form in `which l'prefer to manufacture the coinmercial article.
Beyond the letters of reference before referred to, the perforated metal disk or strainer I, is domed for the greater part of its area and then bent over at its edges at b1. The body' of the tea-pot is marked L and the outlet perfor-ations /al' con'imunicatinn` with the spoutm. Thestrainer bmay be made of perforated metal or Wire gauze to the required mesh.
I olaiinz-w y l. In a strainer for tea, pots, a perforated disk, a spring YWire closed loop on one side of said disk, shoulders upon the loop adapted to engage in a perforation in the tea pot,A
a pointed end toV said loop to facilitate engagement With Vthe perforation in the tea pot, a handle upon the other side of said disk, saidhandle being` connected Withsaid loop, so'that said handle and said loop Vform together a Yrigid element whereby when inserting the strainer in the tea pot, the perforation in the .tea pot for receiving,` the pointed end of theloop may be lo ated by the sense of touch.
2. In a strainer for tea pots, a perforated disk, a ,spring Wire closed loop on one side of said disk,`ishoulders upon tlieloop adapted to engage in a perforation in'the tea pot, a pointed end to said loop to facilitate engagement with the perforation in the tea pot, a neck portion in said loop adj acentthe .disk,a metalband around said neck, a haiidle upon the other'side of said disk, said handle being-.connected `with said `loop so that said handle and said loop form together a rigid element.
3. ln a. strainer for tea pots, a perforated disk, a spring wire closed loopon one side of said disk, shouldersupon the loop adapt ed to engage in a perforation in the tea pot, a pointed lendto-said loop to `facilitate engagement with Vthel perforation in the `tea pot, a neck portion in said loop adjacent the disk, a metal band ar und said neck, one Wire of `said yneck portion being Inovable Within said band so Vthat it can ap preach the other Wire to `allenT the doop to Contact, aliandle uponthe other side of said disk, said handlefbeing connected with said loop,so that said handle and saiddoop. form together a rigid element.
` I4. ln a strainer for tea-pots,.a perforated metal or Wire gauze disk,a bentrwireloop on one side of the disk, a tapered end tothis loop, shoulders'onftheloop and a, neck-between the shoulders and the disk, an eXtension, to onelinib of the Wire loopWhich passes through and `is secured tofthedisk, a bent end tothis extension onthat side of the disk opposite to the loop, to form a handle, a free end on the otherlirnb of the loop, and a metal band secured-to theextended limb of tlieloop andencircling the free end.
