To all who/n1. t may concern Y Be it knoivnthat, OnienNn J PnQUn'r'rn, a citizen of the United States,residing at Southbridge, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Gage-Knife, of which the following is a. specification.
This invention relates to a gage knife capable of Igeneral use, but particularly designed for removing layers of fabric from pneumatic tires in the process of repairing the same.
In such Work, it is desired to remove only a single layer at a time, Without injuring the next underlying layer. It is the object of my invention to provide a gage knife adapted for such purposes and preferably provided With a sheath by which the depth of cut may be definitely limited.
A further object is to provide a gage knife in which the cutting edges may be easily sharpened after the sheath is removed and in which due provision for Wear is made.
Further features of my invention relate to arrangements and combinations of part-s hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of niy invention is shown in the drawings in Which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved knife;

Fig. 3 is a partial side elevation of the knife blade, and
Figs. l and 5 are transverse sectional elevations taken along the lines H and 5-5 in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, my improved knife comprises a blade 10, a handle 11 and a sheath 12. The blade 10 is relatively broad and flat and is provided with a shank 13 having an opening 14- through Which a pin or key 15 is inserted to secure the blade to the handle. The handle 11 is provided with the usual bushing or ferrule 16 at the end thereof adjacent the blade 10.
The blade as shown in the drawings is provided with tivo cutting portions .17 and 1S, the portion 17 extending substantially at a right angle to the edge of the blade 10, While the portion 18 is undercut or hookshaped as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
The sheath 12 is preferably formedof a single piece of sheet metal bent to fit closely around the blade- 10 and provided within1 tegral lugs or projections 119 which are bent slightly' inivard andy which catch under the end of the blade 10 when the sheath is in position thereon, the sheath then abutting the end of the handle 11.
The outer end of the sheath is rounded to correspond to the shape of the blade 10 and the sheath is of such length that the cutting portions 17 and 18 project onlya predetermined definite distance beyond the end of the sheath, as indicated in Figs. l and 2. When the knife is used for repair Work on pneumatic tires, this projection of the cutting portions is made substantially equal to the thickness of one layer of fabric so that the knife will easily sever one layer without injuring the next underlying layer.
The hook-shaped cutting portion 18 is conveniently used for a draiv cut in which the knife is moved toward the operator, While the cutting portion 17 is designed for use in the opposite direction, or away from the operator.
Vhen the cutting portions 'become Worn or dull. the sheath is easily slipped off of the blade, and the cutting portions may then be easily sharpened. If it is necessary to grind off the end of the blade in sharpening the same, the end of the sheath 12 may be correspondingly shortened so that the projection of the blade will remain unchanged.
Having thus described my invention, it Will be evident that changes and modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art Within the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the claims and l do not Wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed but what I claim is 1. A gage knife comprising a handle, a flat blade fixed to said handle and having an undercut hook-like cutting portion, and a sheath fitting said blade and through which said cutting portion extends a predetermined distance.
2. A gage knife comprising a handle, a relatively broad flat blade fixed to said handle and having a'cutting portion transverse to the edge of said blade, and a flat tubular sheath fitting said blade and through which said cutting portion extends a predeterq mined distance.

A gage knife comprising a handle, a relatively broad flat blade fixed to said handle and having a cutting portion substantially perpendicular to the edge of said blade and a second undercut hook-like cutting portion disposed at an acute angle to the edge Yoif said blade, and a fiat tubular sheath fitting said blade and through Which said Vcutting portions extend predetermined distances.
