EDGAR E. PHINNEY, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO' MONROE CALCU- LATING MACHINE COMPANY, OF ORANGE, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
, CARRIAGE-LOCK FOR CALCULATING-MACHINES Specification of Letters Patent. P t t J ly 1 1921 Application filed February 7, 1920, Serial No. 356,882. Renewed May 12, 1921. Serial No. 468,978:
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR E. PHINNEY, a citizen of the United States, resident of Vest Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Carriage-Lock for Calculating-Machines; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is sectional view of the invention, on the line 11, Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a front view, with parts broken away, the carriage being shown in normal position.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to the right-hand end of Fig. 1, the carriage being shown as raised.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to the left-hand end of Fig. 2, the carriage being shown as raisedl The invention has relation to means for preventing displacement of the shiftable carriage of a calculating machine during a registering operation, being particularly applicable to a machine of the 1; shown in the reissue patents to Baldwin, No. 13,842.
The object of the invention is to provide a locking means of this character which will render it impossible to operate the machine unless the carriage is roperly positioned, with the gears carried t ereby fully meshed with the corresponding gears on the frame.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 1 designates the frame of the machine, and 2 an endwiseshiftable carriage, pivoted upon said frame at 59, said carriage having mounted thereupon a series of numeral or registering dials 13, each carrying a gear. A series of intermediate gears 12 ismounted upon frame 1, in position to mesh with the gears of the dials 13, these intermediate gears being operated by primary selecting elements 5, mounted on rotary shaft 4, and by carry teeth 7', mounted upon shaft 73, as described 0.- 13,841, and
hereinbe'fore-mentioned, the carriage being raised upon pivot 59 to disengage the respective gears, laterally shifted and allowed to seat in adjusted position through gravity. This is accomplished by means of a-rotatable rod 61, having opposite crank arms 64, engaging seats of an element of the carriage frame located opposite pivot 59. The engagement of the opposite arms 64 with the seats 65 will prevent endwi'se movement of the carriage, so long as it remains'seated in normal position.
The carriage positioning and locking means comprises a disk at, rigidly mounted upon an element of the operating means;
herein shown as the shaft.4 of the primary selecting elements. This disk is notched circumferentially at e, the lateral walls of the notch lying normally upon opposite sides of a beveled tooth or projection b of a'lever c, pivoted to the frame at i and extending below shaft 4. The free end of lever c has pivoted thereto an extension arm a, terminating at its upper end'in a hooked head a, normally en aging a horizontal ledge or shoulder 71. o the carriage frame.
When the carriage is raised upon its pivot, lever c and its extension arm a will be raised freely therewith, tooth b entering the notch of disk (I.
Upon rotation of the crank handle 3 in either direction, the rotative movement of shaft 4 will bring a wall of notch e into e'nwise s ifting movement of said carriage, to
bring the gears of the registering dials fully in mesh with the gears 12. The peripheral face 9 of disk d will now be opposite tooth 6, thereby preventing the raisin of the lever and carriage until the completion of the registering operation, when .the notch 0 will again come opposite tooth 6. Obviously, the registering movement cannot occur while the carriage is raised, as thetooth is held in the notch of disk d.
Provision is made for manually unlocking the carriage at any time, by allowing a pivotal movement of extension a upon lever 0, so that the hooked head a may be rasped and pulled out of .engagement with s oulder h of the carriage, against the tension of a spring f of said extension.
I claim:
