SHIFTING STAGE.

Application filed June 29,
To all 7.071.077? it may concern.
P-e known that l. .nARLns l i CLonrnI/rnn. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shifting Stages. of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stagingor caffolding' devices such as are employed by painters and the like and more particularly to supporting means adapted to hold and shift such a stage or scaffold, and has one of its ol'ijects to permit the same to be easily moved quickly and safely and to be securely placed at any desired position.
The invention consists in the novel construction. arrangement and combination or various elements and parts, set forth in the claims hereof, one embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings and is hereinafter more particularly described.
in the said drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed according to my invention, looking outward from the wall of the building in connection with which it is used; Fig. 2 is an end view of the same; Fig. 3 is an elevation of one of the supplementary supporting devices lookinp; in the other direction from that shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view of the said supmiting device taken at right angles to Fig. 3.. the said Figs. and. 4 showing more particularly the form of such supporting device which is used as an extension to the main supporting device when necessary, as hereinafter more particularly described; Fig. 5 is a detail view showing; the upper part of one of said supporting: devices. and f ip. 3 is a detail view of one of the sliding sleeves forming part of the invention as hereinafter explained.
in carrying my invention into effect in the embodiment thereof Which I have selected for illustration in the accompanying drawings and description in this specification. 1 provide pair of supporting members 11 each of which is provided at its upper end with sockets 13 adapted to receive a hook v which may be inserted in either one of said sockets. as shown more particularly in Fig. 5. where said hook is shown in full lines ii :crted in the leftdiand socket and in dotte'l lines as if placed in the right-harm socket. The hooks 1 1 are adapted to be placed over the cornice or edge of a roof Specification of Letters Patent.

of a building or other structure and thereby maintain the supporting members 11 in odsition. I
Mounted upon said supporting members 11 are sliding; frames (see Fig. 2) each of whu-h comprises guiding); sleeves 15 tittino; over said supporting members 11. and a V91- tical connecting member 16. Each sleeve of the ower pair is provided with a second sleeve 17 secured laterally thereto (see Fig. 6). i
in each of said sleeves 17 is located a supporting beam 18 (see Fig. 2) which bears at each end a wheel or roller 19, shown as of different sizes. though this is not essential. adapted to bear against the wall of the building or structure in connection with which the stage is to be used, this wall being designated 20 in the drawings. The beams 18 are provided with notches 21 adapted to engage with rings 22 which are connected by a chain 23 to the upper sleeve 15, thus serving to support the ends of the beams 18. The ends of the stage proper. designated 2%, rest upon the beams 18 and are secured thereto by hooks 25, secured to the stage by nuts 26, and the lower ends of which are adapted to engage with the notches 21 in the beams 18; by this means the stage may be adjustably secured at any point on the beams 18. The sliding frames and the beams and stage supported thereby. are raised and lowered by means of ropes 27 passing through pulleys 28 in a manner which will be well. understood.
The supporting members 11 are provided with. sockets 29., and the sliding frames lo-- (rated on said supporting members are provided with pawls 30 adapted to engage with the said sockets. The said supporting; members are also provided with guides 31 (see F 1) which are adapted to deflect the pawls 30 when the sliding frames are low-- ercd. so that said pawls will not engage with said, sockets, but to guide said pawls toward said sockets when the supporting frames are raised.
in connection with the parts of the apparatus which have been described, I may also provide a sliding seat 32 (see F 2). the use of which will be hereinafter ere plained; this seat is provided with a pawl 33 analogous to the pawls 30, and likewise adapted to engage with the sockets 29.
in Fig. 2 the invention is shown in use as it would be when supported from a cornice stood,
which projects some distance out beyond the wall of the building. When ,it 'is' desired to usethe apparatus upon a building which has no projecting cornice, or one which projects but a slight a removed rom the sockets in which they ashown in Fig. 2 and in full lines in Fig. 5, and are placed in the opposite sockets, as shown by the dotted lines in Fi g. 5, and the apparatus reversed, so that the supporting members 11 then lie nearer to the wall of the building, and the platform '24 is outside of the supporting members, instead of being between the supporting members and the wall as shown in Fig. 2.
.When the apparatus isused in connection with a structure higher than the length of the supporting members 11, I seci. ie to the lower end of the said supporting members 11, additional or supplementary supporting members 12, such as are shown in Figs. 3 and i, and which are provided with hooks 3st at theirupper ends which engage with sockets in the lower ends of the main supporting members 11.
These additional supporting members 12 are provided with pawl engaging sockets 29 and guides 31, analogous to those already descri b0 The operation of my invention is as follows: When the apparatus is to be used, upon a building having a cornice or thelike projecting forward from the front of the building a substantial distance, the apparatus is used in-the form shown in Fig. 2, the suspending hook 1 1 being inserted in the socket in the supporting member 11 as shown in said Fig. 2 and in the full lines in Fi 5. The sliding frames comprising the s eeves v15 thev horizontal supporting members 18, theplatform 24, and the chain 23 are then a-llin the relative positions shown in said Fig. 2. The platform can. then be raised'or'lowered by the rope 27 in the usual manner which will be well underthe large wheel 19 on the left in lfi igr2 bearing against the wall 20. The pawl 30 are adapted to engage with the sockets 29 and support the platform at any desired elevation. The platform may then step by step, the pawls 30 engaging with successive sockets 29, but when it is desired to lower the same, the pawls, 30 are deflected by the guides 31 so that they do not engage with the sockets 29 and the platform may so be lowered to the full extent. If the height of the building requires, the additional supporting members 12 may be secured to the lower ends of the principal supporting members 11 by the hooks 3a in an obvious manner.
If it is desired to raise or lower the'plat form, without'the necessity of the operator distance, the hooks 1t porting members he raised remaining thereon during such raising or lowering operation, the operator may sit or.
are inserted in the sockets on the other sides of the, supporting members 11, as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 5, and the said supthen hang in closer relation to the wall of the building, and in that case the smallwheels or rollers 19 in the ends of the horizontal supporting members 18 bear against the wall of the buildin The advantages of my invention will be obvious from what has been abovesaid with regard to its construction and method of operation.
I do not limit myself to the particular form, construction or combination which I have described in the specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, as
it is obvious that various modifications of the same could be made without departing from the spirit and'scope of theinvention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is as follows:
1. In a shifting stage, the combination with a main supporting.member provided with means adapted to secure the same to a building, of platform supporting means slidably mounted upon said supporting member, a socket in said supporting member, apawl on said sliding means adapted to engage with said socket, and means on said supporting member adapted to guide said pawl away from said socket when said sliding means is lowered.
2. In shifting stage, the combination with a main supporting member provided with means adapted to secure the same to building, of plattorm supporting means form. a socket in said supporting member,
a pawl connected to said sliding means adapted to engage with said socket, means on said supporting member adapted to guide said pawl awayv from said socket. when said sliding means is lowered, and means adapted to raise and lower said platform.
Signed at Fall Riven-lvlass, this 241th dav of June, 1920.
