' 3 SHEETS-SHEET 3- INVENTOR ATTORNEY service, and a res I ADOLPH IR. FADNESS, OF VELVA, NORTH DAKOTA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be'it known that I, ADoLrH R. F ADNESS, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Velva, in the county of McHenry and, State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Sieve- Holders for Threshing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to threshing machines, particularly to attachments there for, and has for its object the provision of means associated with the sieves located beneath the lower chaffer whereby the sieves may be adjusted toward or away from the chaffer, depending upon conditions arising in the threshing of different grains.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed that the sieves'may be adjusted from the outside of the machine and even while the machine is inoperation, meansbeing also provided whereby the position of the sieves may be readily ascertained at all times.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character in which the parts will be held firmly in adjusted position.
Anadditional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture and installation, highly efficient in use, durable in general improvement in, the art. 1 I
W'ith the aboveand other objects and ad-' vantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a threshing machine, showing my device in position,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of the threshing machine and showing one side of my adjusting means in elevation,
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing my device also in section,
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View,
Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view taken through both sides of the thresher,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view illustrating a slight modification,
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view showing another modified form,
Fig. 8 is a cross section therethrough, and

. Fig. 9 is a detail sectional view of a further modification.
' Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letters A and B designate the sides of a portion of a threshingmachine and C designates the sides of the lower chaffer. The letters'D and E designate the sides of the sieves which are pivoted at one end, as shown at F. It is well known that under different conditions arising in the threshing of different grains it is necessary orat least preferable that the positions of the sieves with respect to the chafi'er be varied. It is with this fact in view that the present invention hasbeen designed.
In carrying out my invention I provide a casing 10 secured against the inner faces of the sides A. and B of the threshing machine adjacent the free ends of the sieves D and E. Each casing has its edge toward the sieves formed open and theremainderis closed for the purposev of excluding. dust and chaff. Disposed at the open edge of each casing is a vertically movable bar 11 which bears against the edge of thecasing and which has a reduced portion 12 extend- Each bar 11 is formedwith a plurality of, notches 13 of any. desired number and the free ends of the sieves are engaged within selected pairs. of these notches, depending'uponwhether it is desired to have the uppermost sieve close to or comparatively far from the chafi'er. The edge of the reduced portion 12 of the bar 11 is formedwith rack teeth 14.
In order that the bars 11 may be moved up and down to move the sieves with respect to the chaifer, I providewithin each casing 10, a pinion 15 meshing withthe rack teeth 14. These pinions are secured upon a shaft 16 which extends transversely through the thresher and which is journa-led through the sides thereof.
One end of the shaft 16 projects beyond one side of the thresher and carries a disk 17 and a knob 18 or other suitable handle. The disk 17 has formed in its periphery, a plurality of notches 19. The disk 17 also carries a ridge 20 serving as an indicator.
Located on the side of the thresher outwardly of the disk 17, are'indicating marks 21 adjacent which are located legends indicating the highest, lowest, and intermedlate positions of the sieves and these legends are shown as being Raised, Center and Lowered. Intermediate mark may also be provided. Pivoted side ,thenarms are coniieeted bloclis32 iiotched; thresher is s spring-pressed pawl 22,,hav- L as show n, for hol ding, the sieves.
