Description

' UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JoHN o. ORUMPTON, OF ALLEGHENY oIrY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITIONSFOR KINDLING FIRES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,382, dated April 29, 1873; application filed December 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN O. GRUMP'roN, of Allegheny City, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Composition for Kin dlin gWood and Goal Fires; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in a composition for kindling fires, which renders the use of kindlings of other kinds, such as wood, &c., unnecessary, even in the lighting of coal-fires in which either hard or soft coal is used.
ingredients added, and the whole thoroughly intermixed by stirring. The mass is then poured out to cool in a proper-shaped mold, and when cold is cut in blocks for market.
In order to color the article or blocks thus produced, I add, while it is in a molten condition, one-fourth of a part of lamp-black. This gives the block a brilliant black finish.
The proportions above given can, of course, be varied somewhat without effecting a radical change in the composition.
The use of pulverized coal gives body to the block and causes it to burn for a long time, while the other more-highly combustible elements in burning produce a large amount of heat.
The parafline in burning consumes the smoke produced by the other ingredients, and thereby causes the block to burn with little or no sooty smoke.
The block so made kindles very readily and will burn for a long time with a very hot flame.
In use the coal is placed directly upon or around it, so that it shall be ignited thereby.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The composition for kindling fires, consistin g of resin, sawdust, parafi'ine, and pulverized coal, above described.
In testimony whereof I, the said JOHN (J. GRUMPTON, have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN G. ORUMPTON.
