To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FRmsE- GREENE, a subject of the King of England, residing in London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Panchromatic sensitizing Composition, of which the following is a specification.
The invention provides an improved color sensitizer for the preparation of panchromatic plates whereby enhanced color effects may be obtained. A part of the invention also consists in the method of making up this sensitizer.- g
A specific object of the invention is to improve color photography processes .based upon the employment of two colors whereby an approximation to natural color effects is obtained. In particular the invention aims at improving two-color cinematography.
These and other objects and features of the invention will now be described in detail. 1
The color sensitizer according to the pres ent invention comprises pinacyanol, pinaverdol, pinachrome, flavazine (sometimes flavazin or flavasine) and ammonia mixed with water, and preferably the proportions employed are as follows Pinacyanol 2 grains. Pinaverdol 6 grains. Pinachrome 2 grains. F lavazine 4: grains. Ammonia(.880) 4 ozs. Distilled water 65 pints.
In making up the sensitizer the first four ingredients in the quantities stated are preferably placed in 10'ozs. of boiling alcohol 7 and stirred for say 10 minutes until thoroughly dissolved, after which 65 pints of distilled water may be added at "a temperature of about 70 Fahr. and then the 4' ozs. of ammonia added. The film or plate to be color-sensitized is immersed in this mixture for about 5 minutes and kept constantly in movement. The drying should be effected quickly at a temperature of about 75 F ahr.

The ingredients detailed above are referred to by the names commonly given to them in the chemical and color photographic industry. 'It will be understood, however,
that pinacyanol (sometimes known as sensi-- tol red) is obtained by treating quinaldinium salts with formaldehyde followed by alkali. Pinaverdol is p-toluquinaldinquinoliniummethylcyaninbromid. v

Pinachrome is p-ethoxyquinaldin-p-methoxyquinolinethylcyaninebromid.
Flavazine is one of "the few important dyes belonging to the small class of. pyrazolone dye-stufis and is a dye similar to tartrazin. 1
The marked difference of color values obtained by the use of the special sensitizer aforesaid, leaves room for considerable manipulation of the colors in the toningor staining-bath, so that the depth. of color of either plate may be modified as required to obtain a proper balance according to the" color effects desired and according to the subject under treatment. This balance can only be judged by the operator for each subject, and will depend largely upon individual taste, but the fact that a large di'fi'erence of color value is obtained by means of this, invention leavesscope for the desired manipulation.
What I claim as m invention and desire to secure by Letters l atent is 1. A color sensitizer for color-photography comprising pinacyanol, pinaverdol, pin-' achrome, flavazine and ammonia mixed with water. 7
'2. A color sensitizer for color-photography comprisin the following substances in substantially t e proportions indicated:
Pinacyanol 2 grains. Pinaverdol 16 grains. Pinachrome 2 grams. Flavazine. 4 grains. Ammonia (.880) 4ounces. Distilled water 65 pints.
3 A method of making up a color sensitizer for color-photography, comprising placing pinacyanol, pinaverdol, pinachrome and flavazine in boiling alcohol, stirring until dissolved and adding water and ammonia.
4. A method of making up a color sensitizer for color-photography,- comprising placing pinacyanol, pinaverdol, pinachrome grapins of flavazine in 10 ounces of boiling and flavazine in boiling alcohol, stirring them alcohol, stirring for ten minutes until thor- 10 until dissolved and then adding water at a, 'oughly dissolved, adding 65 pints of distilled temperature of 70 F. and ammonia.
