AV 1. HURD.
GARDENERS STOOL.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 1. 1920.

Z SHEETS-SHEET 2 ARTHUR J. HURD, or WAUSAU, Wisconsin.
GARDENER S STOOL.
. Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 5, 1921.
Application filed September 7, 1920. Serial No. 408,616.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. HURD, a citizen of the -United States, residing at lVausau, in the county of Marathon and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Gardeners Stool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to-agricultural implements and more particularly to a gardeners stool and has for its object the provision of a portable seat, whereby a person "may be relieved of the strain incident to the position necessarily assumed while weeding and thinning vegetable crops.
A further object is the provision of a comfortable seat which is readily moved and remains steady when in use.
Still further it is an object of the invention to provide adjustable means whereby the seat may be elevated to suit the require ments of an operator or for hillside work, adjustable means also being provided for the accommodation of rows of different widths.
With these and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that minor changes may be made in the de vice without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the ad vantages thereof.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a view in side elevation;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 33 of Fig. 2; and f Fig. 4 is a detail view of a portion of the, structures Referring to the drawing by characters of reference the numeral 1 designates a platform 01 seat, having secured to the underside thereof cleats 2. Channel irons 3 on which the cleats 2rest, have their flanges downturned for thereception of supporting members 4. The members 4 are of channel iron crosssection, each member comprising a transversely extended portion 5 and a vertical portion 6. Elongated slots 7 and 8 are formed in the portions 5 and 6 respectively.
A member 4 is provided for each of the corners of the seat 1 and is held in place by a bolt 9 which passes'through the seat 1, cleat 2, channel 3 and slot 7 in the member 4.
To the vertical portions 6 at one end of the device are secured legs 10 made of channel 1ron and provided at the lower end with a foot 11, the same being attached to the leg portion in any approved manner and having upturned ends to permit free and easy movement over the soil. A bolt 12 passes through the leg 10 and the slot 8 adjustably securing the leg to the member 4.
The portions 6 at the other end of the seat have secured thereto by means of bolts 13, legs 14, similar to" the legs 10, each belng provlded with a wheel 15. A block 16 secured to the channel 14 carries a stub axle 17 on which the wheel is mounted. The wheels being provided with ball-bearings if desired.
A handle 18 is attached to the seat for use 1n moving the device along the row.
Attached to the seat is a socket 19 for the reception of the stem 20 of a canopy or sunshade 21.
In use the device is placed astride a row of plants, the operator moving it along the row as occasion requlres.
Adjustment of the device for rows of different widths is provided for by reason of the slots 7 in the member 4, so that the legs may be extended for straddling rows of greater width or retracted to pass between the rows if necessary.
Adjustment of the legs through the slots 8 enables a person to raise or lower the seat to suit the individual operator, this adjustment also permitting the legs on one side of the device being lowered to maintain an approximately level seat for work on a hills1 e.
The wheels at one end permit easy movement of the device from one point to another and the shoe portionsrender it steady when in use.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is 1. A gardeners stool comprising a seat; pairs of soil engaging supports disposed adj acent to the ends of the seat; and means for connecting the supports with the seat to effect a vertical adjustment between the support and the seat and to effect a horizontal adjustment between the supports of each pair.
2. A gardeners stool comprising a seat; pairs of soil engaging supports disposed adjacent to the ends of the seat; the supports at one end of the seat being provided with wheels for engaging the soil, the supports thesupports of each pair and to efiect verti cal adjustment between the supports and the seat;
3. In a"device of theclass'described, a
' seat cleats disposed'adjacent to'the ends of the-seat; pairs of adjustable supports, carried'by the cleats, "each of said supports'coIn-,
prising a horizontal portion and a "vertical portio njthe horizontal portion having alongitudinal slot;a bolt passing throughthe "slot and cleat for connecting the saidsupport to the-seat, whereby horizontal adjustmen't of the "support is 'efi'ected.
4 111, adevice o f'the class described,' a seat-{pairs of 'adjust'able supportsdisposed adjacent tojthe'ends ofthe seat,'eac'h of said supports comprising a horizontal portion and a'vertical portionpeach portion being of approximately "U; cross-sectional shape, 1
the horizontal portion having a longitudiportion to the seat;-whereby'throughgsaid slot horizontal adjustment of the support is efiected, the Vertical portion of the Support having a longitudinal slot; a leg for nal slot; means for securing the horizontal each of the vertical supports, abolt passing through the legfand slot in the vertical portion for securing'the leg'to the support,
whereby vertical adjustment of 'thef'leg is effected; soil engaging shoes. connected to the legs at one end of the seat andwheels connected to the legs at the other "end -of theseat. v i
In testimony thatI' claim the foregoing as-my own, I have hereto afiiXed my'signaturein .the'presence of two witnesses. "j
