IMPROVEMENT IN FEATHER-RENOVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,327, dated April .29, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. GEOFF, of Mahanoy City, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Portable Steam Carpet, Hair, and Feather Renovator, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a hollow revolving cylinder, to which stcamis admitted through one of the hollow journals, through one set of pipes for distributing it throughout the sub stance contained in it to act directly thereon, and afterward through another set of pipes for using the heatto dry the substance, and in which said cylinder is a rotary shaft having detachable beaters for use in stirring feathers and the like, also having disks or heads and detachable bars or rods for rolling carpetson to be treated, the heaters being removed; and when the heaters are used the bars are detached.

A represents the hollow cylinder, which is mounted on a portable stand, B, by hollow journals G D. The journalO is to be connected by a steam-tight joint with a supply-pipe of a steam-generator, and'has two branches, E, discharging into the drying-pipes F within the cylinder; also two other branches, G, discharging into the distributing-pipes H, also within the cylinder, and having nozzles I for distributing the steam and discharging it into direct contact with the contents of the cylinder. The branch pipes E and G have cocks J to regulate the admission of the steam and shut it off altogether, and the'dry-pipes F have escape-pipes K, with cocks to regulate the steam. L is a shaft in. the axis of the cylinder, with a bearing at one end, M, in the cylinder-head, and at the other end, N, passin g out through the hollow journal of the cylinder to receive a hand-crank, O, for turning it. This shaft carries arms P, for use when treating feathers, hair, &c., for stirring and agitating the mass to facilitate the action of r the steam. These arms are detachably connected, so as tobe removed when carpets are to be treated, and the shaft is provided near each cylinder-head with a disk, Q, for the support of bars R, to be used for winding the carpets on, three or more circular rows of the bars being used to roll on long pieces. The bars are detachably connected to the disks by the tongues T and clips U, or it may be any other suitable means. In rolling on the carpet the end is attached to the pins V onthe shaft and rolled on the inner row of bars, which are the only ones applied at the time; then the next row is put in and the carpet rolled on them, and so on till the carpet is completely rolled up. Then the door W of the case is closed and steam let on through pipes Gr, H, and I, and the shaft is turned as long as the direct application of the steam is needed. Then it is shut off from these pipes and admitted to the drying-pipes E to dry off the moisture left by the steam. Exhaustpipes X, with suitable cocks, are applied to the pipes F and H to allow the water of condensation to escape.
lrVhen feathers, hair, and other like matters are to be treated, they are packed in the cylinder and first subjected to the direct action of the steam, and then dried byit, as in the case of the carpets.
I propose to construct this machine'in sections adapted for being readily separated and packed compactly for storage or transportation.
, Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. The cylinder A with distributing-pipes H I, drying-pipes F, connections E G, hollow journal 0, escape-pipes K and X, and the beater-shaft L, substantially as specified.
2. The said beater-shaft having the heaters detachably connected, the disks Q, and the detachable bars R, substantially as specified.
