Description
J. KONZ. COMBINATION CALIPQERS. APPLICATION EILED luv/29,1919.
1,383,217., PatentedJune28,1921-.
.Tnren for UNITED STATES JOSEPH KONZ, OF OLYMPIA, VJASHINGTON.
G OMB IN ATION- CALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 29, 1919. Serial No. 314,108.
To (1U 107mm it may concern Be it known that I. JOSEPH Koivz, a citizen of Austria-llungary, residing at Olympia, in the county of Thurston and State of VJashmgton, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Calipers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a mechanics tool and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved mechanics tool, which can be used for a variety of different purposes and eliminate the necessity of carrying a plurality of separate tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved mechanics tool which embodies inside and outside calipers, dividers, and depth and height gages, whereby the necessity of having separate instruments for each different kind of work is eliminated.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, in which:
Figure l is a tool.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar referen e characters desig nate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates the improved tool, which includes the legs 2 and 8 pivotally connected together at their inner ends and to the Ushaped head t, the arms 5 of which embrace the outer surfaces of the legs 2 and 3. The legs 2 and 3 have their meeting faces reduced in thick plan view of the improved ness so as to permit the legs to lie parallel with one: another in the same plane. A set screw 6 extends through the arms 5 of the head and the legs and forms means for-pivptally connecting the legs together and to the head, and the set screw permits the legs to be held in any adjusted position. The outer end of the head 4: has threaded'into the same the milled hand piece 7 so as to facilitate the handling of the tool. The outer terminals of the legs 2 and 3 are prov ded with inwardly and outwardly extending feet 8 and 9, which constitute means whereby the tool may be used as an inside and outside caliper. The terminals of the legs 2 and 8 are bifurcated and bent outwardly in opposite directions to provide the feet 8 and 9.
Each of the legs 2 and 3 is also provided with a slot 10 which slidably receives the set screw 11, carried by the pointer 12, which is slidably mounted on the lower face of each leg. The pointer 12 has the lower outer face thereof beveled upwardly as. at 13 to form a sharpened terminal, while its upper face is formed with a plane surface so as to form means for slidably engaging each of the legs. The sharpened point 13 carried by the pointer is adapted to lie directly between the feet 8 and 9 when the pointer is in its projected position, so as to permit the tool to be used as a divider. It can be seen that by loosening the set screw the pointer may be readily adjusted into operative or inoperative position as may be desired.
The leg 2 has hingedly secured thereto a relatively small steel rule 14 which is formed of hinged sections 15 and 16 and these sections are suitably hinged together by means of pins 17. The other leg 3 is'provided with a plurality of leaves 18, which are pivotally mounted upon a pin 19 extending through the leg and these leaves constitute means for gaging the thickness of any article. It is to be understood that the blades 18 are preferably, of different thicknesses so as to gage the thickness of blocks or other members during use of the device. Each of the legs have pivotally secured thereto small hooks 20 which are adapted to be swung into and out of engagement with the outer ends of the leaves 18 and the rule so as to hold the same against displacement when these instruments are not in use.
From the foregoing description it can be seen that an improved mechanics combination caliper is provided which can be effectively used for a number of different purposes thus obviating the necessity of carrying a plurality of different tools Patented J true 28, 1921.
of my invention illustrated in the accent panying drawings and'referred to in the above description, as the preferred i embodiment, is the most eflicient and practical; yet realizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion andarrangement of parts may be resorted to, when'required without sacrificing any of the advantagesot my invention asset forth. r a I hat I claim as new is:
In a tool of theclass CIGSCIlbGCl, a pairot pivoted legs, each leg having outwardly and oppositely directed feet at its free end, each leg being provided with a longitudinal groove in one'face a pointer slidably mounted in said groove and having a point adapted to be extended past the end of the leg and between the oppositely directed feet thereof, and means forsecuring the pointer in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
