To (ZZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, PASQUALE PASQUARI- nnro, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at llamden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in Extension- Ladders; and 1 do hereby declare the fol lowing, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in
Figure 1, a plan view of an extensionladder constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2, a front view of the same.
Fi 8, a side view partly in section.
Fig. 4., a detail side view of the mechanism for controlling the inclination of the ladder, with the crank-shaft removed.

Fig. 6, a side view of the same.
This invention relates to an improve ment in extension ladders for use, principally, by fire departments, and particularly to ladders of the lazy-tongs type, the object of the invention being to'provide a ladder which may be mounted on a truck so as to be readily turned in any: direction and easily extended or folded; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a table provided on its under face with a post 11 which extends through a bed 12 which is adapted to be firmly secured to a truck of any approved construction. Securely mounted on the bed is an externally cut gear 18 and resting upon the upper face of the gear and between the table 10 is a ball-bearing race-way 14. The table is secured in place by a nut 64 and between the nut and bed 12 is a ball-bearing race-way 65 and a washer 66. The gear 13 meshes with a pinion 15 mounted at the lower end of a vertical shaft 16 on which is a pinion 17 engaged by a dog 18 mounted in the handle 19 of a head 20 which incloses the pinion and which has a bearing on the vertical shaft 16. This dog is adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the pinion 17 by means of a lever-handle 21 having a cam 22 connected with the outer end of the dog When the dog 18 is engaged with the p1n1on the movement of the handle one way or the other, turns the pinion 15 and causes the table 10 to turn with relation to the bed 12.
Mounted in suitable trunnion-blocks 23 and 24 is a horizontal shaft 25 on which are mounted large gears 26 and 27 which mesh with smaller gears 28 and 29 mounted upon a shaft 30 parallel to the shaft 25 and supported by the trunnion-blocks 23 and 24. This shaft 25 has mounted upon its outer end a gear 31 meshing through a train of gears 32 and 83, with a pinion 34 on a driving-shaft 35 which is provided with a cranlo handle 36. The gear 27 is connected through a train with a pinion 37 on a brake-shaft 88 having a brake-disk 39 surrounded by a two-part brake-band 40 and 41, the upper ends of which are engaged by a cam 42 operated by a handle 43, this particular brakemechanism not being claimed in this application as it forms the subject of a separate application filed in even date herewith.
The brake-shaft 38 has mounted upon it a ratchet 44 engaged by a spring-actuated pawl 45 mounted on the cam-shaft 42 and provided with a tail 46 by which it may be lifted out of engagement with the ratchet 44. .The shaft 38 isprovided with a crankhandle 67.
Fixed to the large gears 26 and 27 are posts 47 and 48 connected at their outer ends by a brace 49, and on the shaft 25 are bevelgears 56 and 51 meshing with bevel-gears 52 and 53 fixed to the lower ends of screws 54 and 55, the opposite ends of which are supported by the brace 49, and on these screws are loose collars 56, 57, and nuts 58, and 59. Pivoted to the collar 56 is a link 60, and pivotally connected with the nut 58 is a link 62 of a series of lazy-tongs, the outer pairs of which are centrally pivoted together. Pivoted to the collar 57 is a link 61, and pivoted to the nut 59 is a link 63, the outer pairs of which are centrally pivoted together. The pair of lazy-tong levers are connected by rods 64 which when the ladder is extended, form rounds by which the ladder is ascended.
To extend the ladder, the crank 36 is turned to turn the shaft 25, which, turning the bevel-gears and 51, turns the screws 54 and which draws the nuts 58 and 59 toward the collars 56 and 57, thus drawing the end of the link 62 toward the end of the link 60, and the end of the link 63 toward the end of the link 61, thus projecting the links and extending the ladder. To change the inclination of the ladder, the crank 67 is turned, which turns the shaft 30 and hence the pinions 28 and 29, which in turn move the large gears 26 and 27, which turn the posts 47 and 48, and these will be held in any desired position by the engagement of the pawl with the ratchet 44. When it is desired to lower the ladder, the pawl 45 will be disengaged from the ratchet 4A and the movement of the shaft 38 controlled by the brakemechanism. It will thus be seen that the device may be rotated upon the bed so that the ladder may be projected in any direction. and the inclination of the ladder varied, as required, from a position substantially horizontal to a position substantially vertical.
I claim:
1. An extension ladder comprising a table provided on its under face with a post, a
support for said post including a fixed externally cut gear, a horizontal shaft mounted on said table, gears fixed to said shaft, posts connected with said gears, said posts connected at their upper ends, beveled gears .IIIOLlIltBd on said shaft, screws supported by said frame and shaft and provided with bevel gears at their lower ends meshing with the bevel gears on said shaft, a nut and loose collar mounted on each of said screws and a lazy-tongs ladder connected with said nuts and collars and means for turning said shaft.
2. An extension ladder comprising a table provided on its under side with a post, a support for said post'including a fixed externally cut gear, a vertical shaft mounted in said table, a pinion on the lower end of said shaft meshing with said gear, means for turning said shaft whereby the table may be rotated, a horizontal shaft mounted on said table, gears mounted on said shaft, posts rigidly connected with said gears, a brace connecting the upper ends of said posts, screws supported by said brace. and provided at their lower ends with bevel pinions meshing with bevel pinions on. said shaft, means for tilting said posts, a nut and a loose collar mounted on each of said screws, a lazy-tongs ladder connected with said nuts and collars and means for turning said screw whereby the ladder is extended and retracted, and a brake mechanism for controlling the tilting movements of said ladder.
8. An extensionladder comprising a table, means for rotatably mounting the said table, a horizontal shaft mounted on said table, large gears mounted on said shaft, posts rigidly connected with said large gears and I projecting upwardly therefrom, a brace connecting the upper ends of said posts, bevelgears fixed to said shaft, screws mounted in said brace and supported by said shaft and having at their lower end bevel-gears meshing with bevel-gears on said shaft, smaller gears meshing with said large gears, means including a crank, for turning said smaller gears, whereby said posts may be tilted, a nut and a loose collar mounted on. each of said screws, a lazytongs ladder connected with said nuts and collars and means for turning said screws, whereby said ladders are projected or retracted.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
