Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed February 19, 1920. Serial 110,359,898.
Another ob'ect is to providean adjustable saw set so that the teeth of the saw must be uniformly deflected from the plane of the body part thereof by operation of the device. j
Another object is to provide a saw set having a double, compound lever system and accurate means for adjusting the means that control the presentation of the saw to the device.
Another object is to provide an adjustable gage for determining the length of the tooth to be deflected from the body part of the saw and soft renewable plates therein for contact with the points of the teeth.
Other, further and more specific objects of the invention will become readily apparent to persons skilled in the art, from a consideration of the following description when taken in conjunction with the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing parts in sections.
Fig. 3 is an end view, and
Fig. 4 is an isometric perspective view of the gage of the device.
In all the views the same reference characters are employed to indicate similar parts.
The instrument consists of two major portions, 5 and 6, constituting the handles of the device. The part 5 is extended forwardly and the operating mechanism is mounted thereon. It is also provided with upstanding ears 7 to which the handle 6 is pivoted as at 8. The forward end of the major part 5 is provided with an upstanding part 9 having a perforation 10 in which a lever 11 is pivoted, as at 12. Between an overhanging portion 13, of the part 9 and the end 14 of the lever 11, is a spring 15, which maintains the front end 16 of the lever raised, and the rear end 14c depressed. The handle 6 is provided with a notch 17 into which the rear end 14 of the lever 11 projects, so that when the two handles 5 and '6' are brought together the front end 16 of the lever 11, is moved downwardly toward an anvil 18. The anvil 18 is tapered on its rear edge 19, to fit under an overhanging ledge 20, and a screw 21 is inserted in the front edge of the anvil 18, to hold it in place. The front end of the forward part of the member 5, is tapered, as at 22,'the
tapered surface being in the same plane with the front tapered surface of, the, anvil '18. An arm 23, having a forwardly extending portion 24, is deflected'laterally to provide support for an adjustable screw 25, which is the means for determining the extent to which the teeth of the saw are to be deflected by operation of the lever 11. .The arm23 is provided with a slot 26 and it is ,fixedin' a groove 23' made in the upstanding portionf9. A tooth gage 27 is provided with an elongated slot 28 and is adjustably se curedt'o the underside of the front end of the member 5, by a screw 29. It is also provided with upstanding arms 30 and 31, and these arms are arranged to contain removable soft metal blades 32, preferably made of copper, or other soft metal, for contact with the points of the teeth of the saw. The copper part, 32, extends through slots provided in the upper and lower ends of the upstanding members 31, and are replaceable. The object of making the part 32- of soft metal is, to not injure the points of the teeth as the saw is being set. The gage 27 may be moved forwardly or rearwardly to regulate the length of the tooth to be deflected by the operation of the device.
The operation of the device is as follows The tooth edge of the saw is presented to the set and the screw 25 is positioned to determine the extent to which the tooth is to body part of the saw. The higher the end of the screw 25 is located with reference to the surface 22, the less will be the depression of the tooth, and the lower the end of the screw 25, the greater will be the depression.
The saw is presented between the surface 22 and the lower end of the screw 25, and the end 16 of the lever 11 engages the tooth and deflects it out of the plane of the surface 22 into a substantially horizontal plane. The gage 27 determines the distance that the teeth may be moved from the lower end of the screw 25 on to the anvil 18. The arm 23 may be adjusted axially of the device, by
loosening the screw 33, and after the screw 25 has thus been located in the proper pos1- tion, the screw 33 is again tightened.
is moved along the tooth edge of the saw deflecting alternate teeth, after which the saw is reversed and the intermediate teeth are deflected in thesame manner, as usual in devices of this character.
It will be observed thatevery feature of the device is adjustable so that great accuracy may be. obtained inthe work performed by its use.
While I haveherein lshown a single .em-
bodiment of my invention for the purpose of clear disclosure, it will be ,manifestato persons skilled in theart, thatlnanyl changes may be made inconfigurationand disposition of the parts within thescope tof the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as-new 1 and2 desire :to secnr e by Letters Patent is 1. A saw sethaving amajor portionproviding a handle atone end and having a vertically upstandingpart at the other end,
