Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 2, 1919. Serial No. 287,022.
To allwhom it may comem Be it known that I, ALBERT RUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Doors and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that type of door or shutter which is composed of sections sliding with reference to each other and adapted to be raised and deflected into horizontal extended position.
The object of the invention is to provide a construction of simple, compact and sturdy form and easy operation.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line II-II Fig. 1, looking to the right, the door section being in lowered or opening-closing position.
Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the lower section raised to coincide with the upper section and both released for deflection.
Fig. 4 is a similar' view showing the two sections partly deflected.
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the sections completely deflected to horizontal position.
Fig. 6 is a detail view in horizontal section on the line VIVI Fig. 1.
Fig. 7 is a similar view in horizontal section on the line VIIVII Fig. 1.
In the views the character 10 designates the upper door section which is provided at its upper corners with extensions 11 containing rollers 12 that rest and travel on horizontal brackets 13 secured to and projecting from the wall of the building. The upper section is suspended and supported by the rollers 12 when that section is in and nearly approaches the vertical position. Connecting a rigid bracket 14 on the wall of the building and the lower corners of the upper section are link rods 15 and 16 which are held in disalinement when the upper sec tion is vertical or supported by brackets 13 so as to be easily further flexed when the coincided sections are to be deflected. At their hinged junction said link rods are provided with inwardly standing spools or rollers 17 mounted on suitable journals. The lower corners of the upper section are pr0- vided with laterally projecting pins 18 entering vertical guiding and retaining channels 19 when that section is in vertical position.
The character 20 designates the lower section. This section has anti-friction rollers 21 on shafts 25 at its lower corners, said rollers totravel on vertical tracks 22 and enter short retaining channels 23 when that section is in lowered position. The lower section 20 also has grooves 20 open at their upper ends and extending part way down its vertical edges, said grooves being in line with and admitting the aforesaid spools or rollers 17 when said section is raised.
The extensions 11 have pivoted to them latches 24 that engage teeth 13 on the tracks or brackets 13 when the lower section is lowered. Said latches 24 carry fixed with them downwardly projecting tongues 26; and the lower section carries, at its upper end cam noses 27 to actuate said tongues to release the latches from the teeth 13 when that seetion is raised. When the lower section is lowered the latches 24 fall by gravity into Patented June 28, 1921.

In operation the lower section when raised from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 3 .actuates the tongues 26 to release the latches 24 from the teeth 13 and therefore release for deflection the upper section 10. The lower section, upon such operation becomes engaged with the spools or rollers 17 the bottoms of the grooves 20 limiting the upward vertical movement of the lower section. Further upward draft on the lower section permits a deflection outward, as indicated in Fig. 4, of the united sections because of the inclination of the upper link rod 15. By con-j tinued raising of the lower end of the united sections the two may be carried to substantially the horizontal position indicated in ft will be observed that the upper link rod 15 does not function to sustain the upper door section in the vertical position of the latter but serves to cause the deflection of the united sections and to sustain such sections in deflected position.
The forms of the parts can be changed and some parts omitted without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
l. A door or shutter including, in combination, an upper section and a lower section, means for supporting the upper section in vertical position, means whereby the lower section may be raised into coincidence with the upper section, and link means engaged and actuated by the lower section to initially and subsequently deflect the coinciding sections and support them in deflected position.
2. A door or shutter including, in combi nation, an upper section and a lower section, means for supporting the upper section in vertical position, means whereby the lower section may be raised into coincidence with the upper section, a normally disalined two part link means connected with the upper section and a fixed part and means on the lower section for engaging said link means messes at the junction of the links to cause the deflection of the .coincidin sections.
3. A door or shutter including, in combination, an upper section and a lower section, means for supporting the upper section in vertical position, means whereby the lower section may be raised into coincidence with the upper section, link means connected with a fixed point and the u per section and means on the lower. section for engaging said link means to cause the deflection of the coinciding sections.
4:. A door or shutter including, in combination, an upper section and a lower section, a track for supporting the upper section in vertical position, means whereby the lower section may be raised into coincidence with the upper section, link means engaged by the lower section to deflect the coinciding sections and support them in deflected position.
5. A door or shutter including, in combination, an upper section and a lower section, a track for supporting the upper section in vertical position, means whereby the lower section may be raised into coincidence with the upper section, link means for deflecting the sections, means for holding said link means disalined with the vertical path of movement of the lower section and means whereby the lower section when raised is en'- gaged with the link means to cause the deflection of the sections.
