Description

AM. PHOTO-U THUGRAPH/C ca M K (0:50am: mocsss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FREDERICK SCHOLEFIELD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEREOTYPE-PLATE HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,290, dated April 29, 1873 application filed January 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK ScHoLE- FIELD, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stereotype-Plate Holders; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a; no in Fig. 2, which is a perspective view of the plateholder, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on y y in Fig. 1.
Like letters indicate like parts in each figure. The nature of this invention relates to a device for griping and holding stereotype-plates while they are being mounted, no part of the griper projecting above the plane of the plate. The invention consists in a griping slide, mow ing in dovetail ways at the sides of a slot in the table. The under side of the slide carries a toothed rack, with which meshes a wormgear, journaled in standards underneath, for moving the slide back and forth, the wormgear being driven by aworni on an upright shaft journaled in brackets behind the gear, which shaft has a squared head, so that it may be turned by a socket-wrench.
1n the drawing, A represents oneof the sectional blocks which support the stereotypeplate, and in which is cut a slot with dovetail ways a formed in its sides. On these ways moves a slide, B, whose top is flush with the surroundingparts, except at the rear end where there is a griper, b. On the under side of the slide is formed a toothed worm-rack, 0. Under the slot is a pair of longitudinal webs, A, in which is j ournaled a worm-gear,C,which meshes with the rack 0. Behind the gear and between the webs are two horizontal brackets, d, one above the other, in which is journaled the vertical shaft D, to which is secured, between the brackets, a worm, c, meshing with and giving motion to the worm wheel C in the rotation of the shaft D, which has a squared head to receive a socketwrench, E, which is detached therefrom except while the slide is being moved. I
The construction and arrangement of the griping device insure the holding of a stereotype-plate with great power, while there is no part projecting above the table to obstruct the manipulations of the workman.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The griping-slide B provided with the rack c and moved in the ways a by means of the worm-gear C and the worm c on the vertical shaft 1), substantially as described.
