HH I I n w IH II IIII PATENT OFFICE.
ANDERSON OOLEY, OF COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO.
TIE-PLATE AND RAIL -AN'TICREEPER.
Specification of Letters latent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed flctober 29, 1920. Serial No 420,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, ANDERSON OoLnr, a :itizcn oi the United States, and a resident of Colorado Springs, in the county of El Paso and State of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Tie-Plate and Rail-Anticreeper, oi which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for preventing rails of railways from cutting into the ties, known as tie plates, and from moving longitudinally under the spike heads, known as rail anti-creepers. the railways having heavy trzn'lic, especially one way trallie, the rails are pushed in the direction ot' the heavy traffic and are forced to slip under the spike heads, which is known as creeping.
The object of my invention is the provision of a single device which will prevent the rail from cutting into the tie and from cree iing.
With this and other objects in view, I illi'lstratc ti o preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawings, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise embodiment of the invention, as herein disclosed, but wish it un derstood that various changes and adaptations of the device may be made *ithin the scope of what hereinafter is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan View of the device; Fig. 2, an end elevation of the device, looking in the direction oi the arrow in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, an and elevation of a railway rail mounted on a longitudinal section of the device and spiked to fragment of a tie, showing; the plate. 1 1- driven to the limit of its course in clamping the rail; the section being taken on the line A.) in Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views The reference numeral 1 denotes the primary plate provided with two aws 2 having teeth 3 thereon; a downwardly extending do are i and a horizontally disposed flange 5 at Qhe rear thereof, supported by the triangular brace G, forming; a bracket; two transverse ridges 7 and 8 on the top thereof having recesses 9 and 10 on the inner edge thereof adapted to partly surround spike heads and keep them from bending; tour triangular ribs 11 on the under side thereof adapted to out into a tie and prevent slipping longitudinally of the tie; spike holes 12 adapted to receive spikes, the heads of which fit into the recesses 9 and 10 of the ridges 7 and 8; and a central rectangular hole 13 adapted to receive the secondary plate 1a, the hole 13 being longer than the secondary plate let to permit longitudinal movement therein. lhe secondary plate 14 is provided with a jaw 15 having teeth 16 thereon; spike holes 17 therein; a ridge 18, having recesses 15) and on the inner edgethereot; and triangular ribs 20 on the under side thereof. The material between the curved portions of the ridges 7 and 8 is removed to facilitate striking the plate 1.4 in applying it to the rail,
In use the secondary plate 14 is disposed within the hole 13 and the two plates laid upon'a tie under the base of a railway rail and the flange 4c brought snugly against the side of the tie 21; the primary plate 1 is struck with a spike maul and the teeth 3 of the aws 2 are embedded in the edge of the rail flange 22, and spikes are driven through the holes 12 which hold the embedded teeth 3 firmly against the flange 22.
The teeth 16 of the jaw 15 are now embedded in the edge or the flange of the rail and spikes driven into the holes 17., which hold the teeth 16 firmly against the rail flange. The triangular ridges 11 and 20 cut into the tie and assist the spikes in holding the rails from spreading.
While l have shown my device adapted for ordinary spikes it may be adapted for use with screw spikes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A device of the class described compris ing a primary plate adapted to be mounted on a railway tie, having suitably located spike holes and a main hole therein, and toothed jaws thereon; and a secondary plate having suitably located siike holes the n l and a toothed. j aw thereon, slidably dis-- posed within said main hole in said primary plate; the toothed jaws of each plate being adapted to be embedded in the edge of flange of a railway rail, for the purposes set forth.
2. A device of the class described comprising a horizontally disposed plate, adapted to be mounted on a railway tie, having a clownwardly extending flange on one edge there of, suitably located spike holes and a centrally located rectangular hole therein, and toothed jaws thereon at one end thereof; and a second horizontally disposed plate slidably disposed in said rectangular hole of said first named plate and having suitably located spike holes therein and a toothed jaw at one end thereof; the toothed jaws of each plate being adapted to be embedded in the edge of a railway rail flange and held in position by spikes driven through said suitably located spike holes in said plates; for the purposes set forth.
3. A device of the class described comprising a horizontally disposed plate, adapted to be spiked to a railway tie, having a downwardly extending flange on one edge thereof, transverse triangular ribs on the bot-tom thereof, toothed jaws on the top thereof, suitably located spike holes and a main hole therein; and a second horizontally disposed plate within said main hole of said first named plate, having suitably located spike holes therein, transverse triangular ribs .011 the bottom and a toothed jaw on the top thereof; said toothed j aws being adapted to be embedded in the edges of the flanges of a railway rail; for the purposes set forth.
4. A device of the class described in con1- bination with a railway rail; a primary plate adapted to be-spiked on airailway tie and having toothed jaws thereon adapted to be clamped against one edge of the flange of said rail and held in position by spikes driven through said primary plate on the opposite side of said flange from said toothed jaws and having a main hole therein for the reception of a secondary plate; a secondary plate disposed in said main hole of said primary plate adapted to be spiked to a rail- Way tie and having a toothed jaw thereon, adapted to be clamped against the edge of the flange of said rail and held in position by spikes driven through said secondary plate on the opposite side of said flange from said last named jaws; and a downwardly extending flange on one edge of said primary plate adapted to fit against a tie and assist in keeping said primary plate from slipping Eransversely of the tie; for the purposes set orth.
