IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR PACKING SNUFF.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,281, dated April 29, 1873; application iled March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS H. PELOCK, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Packers for Snuli", &c., of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to a tube of any desired form for receivingand charging snuff or other material, and an adjustable piston arranged within the same in such a manner that the amount of the material required is accurately gaged, thus superseding the necessity ot' Weighin g it, While thetube yacts in the place of a funnel ordinarily used for packing the material.
Figure l is an end view of the device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section at the line w .r of Fig. 1, representing the piston B drawn inward and the tube A filled with material ready for packmg.
Like letters in both gures indicate the same parts.
A is a sheet-metal tube, represented of elliptical form. I however make it of any convenient form and size which may be desired. It is open at one end for the reception of the snuff or other material to be packed. B is a piston in the other end of the tube, having rods U C, which connect with a head-plate, D, for operating the piston. E is a detachable head of the tube, through which the rods C C pass and have a free movement. The head E is fastened to the tube by means of the spring-catches F F, which connect with the sockets G G on opposite sides of the tube. For regulating the charge of snuff, Src., there is an adjustable plate, H, through which the connecting-rods C G slide in theirreciprocating movements. J is a screw, which passes through the head E and connects with the yoke Iot the plate H for the adjustment of the latter.
The operation is as follows: The plate H being adjusted by means of the screw J'so that when the piston has been drawn'back upon the plate, the proper space is made in the tube A for the charge of snuff or other material to be packed. The tube islled by pushing it into the material in a box, and is then placed in a vertical position, as seen in Fig. 2. The tube acts in the place of a funnel, and the head E is held by the operator with his two thumbs and the two lin gers of each hand are used in drawing up the tube to discharge its contents.
-I claim as my invention- In combination with the measuringtube A and adjustable piston B the rods C G, plate D, removable head E, and adjusting device J H, substantiallyin the manner and for the purpose above set forth.
, AUGUSTUS H. PFLOCK.
