Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 28, 1921.
Application filed April 21, 1920. Serial No. 375,506.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD M. Rnnvns, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Spring Compressors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of compressing machines adapted for the convenient handling of the spring members of an automobile in the assembly, removal and replacement of the same, and the present improvement has for its object,
To provide a structural formation and association of parts in a machine of the above mentioned type, by which an effective compression and holding of the spring is attained in a rapid and certain manner during an assemblage or a disassemblage of the component parts of said spring, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying, drawings Figure 1, is a plan view embodying the preferred form of the present spring compressing machine.

Fig. 3, is a detail side elevation showing the parts arranged for the manipulation of the valve springs of the cylinder head of an automobile engine.
Fig. 4, is a detail perspective view of one form of the spring engaging jaws of the present structure.

Fig. 6, is a similar view of a spring holding saddle of the supporting table or bench of the machine.

Fig. 8, is a detail front elevation illustrating the application of the present mechanism to an ordinary segmental axle spring.
Like reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the main frame or standard of the machine, which in the preferred form shown in the drawings comprises a series of vertical posts and horizontal rails rigidly connected together to constitute the rectangular skeleton structure shown.
2 designates a work supporting table or bench secured to the front of the frame 1, preferably in a detachable manner by means of supporting end brackets 3 provided with engaging hooks and studs 4 adapted for engagement in vertical series of receiving orifices 5 in the vertical posts of the main frame 1, so that a positioning of table or bench 2 at the required height may be effected when so desired.
6 designates removable spring holders each of which has a main stationary member or head provided with a fixed upright jaw 7 and a plurality of depending studs 8 adapted for engagement in a plurality of sockets or orifices 9 formed therefor in the table or bench 2, so that the holder 6 may be located at any desired location on said table or bench.
10 designates an adjustable head or jaw slidingly connected to the main head 6 aforesaid, and provided with a clamping bolt 11 or other like means for securing the parts at the required adjustment in relation to each other with the jaws 7 and 10 set to receive and laterally support a spring of a specific width.
12 designates a vertically movable compression head or platen guided in vertical guideways on the main frame and having superimposed relation tothe table or bench 2 aforesaid.
13 designates a forwardly extending and horizontally arranged shank orstem carried by the head or platen 12 for the attachment of different forms of spring engaging jaws or arms now to be described.
14 designates a spring engaging jaw or arm having at one end a tubular socket or sleeve 15 for engagement with the aforesaid shank or stem 18, and with a clamping screw 16 by which it is secured in place. At its other end the jaw 14 is formed with a spring engaging extension 17 which may be of a yoke shape as illustrated in Fig. 4, or an annular shape as illustrated in Fig. 5, or other suitable form as may be found desirable for a particular use.
The preferred means for imparting vertical movement to the compression head or platen 12 comprises parts as follows:
18 and 19 designate upper and lower shafts journaled on the main frame 1 and carrying pairs of sprocket wheels 20 and 21 for engagement with a pair of endless chains 22, which are in turn operatively connected to the head or platen 12, to impart the required vertical movement to the same in either direction, in accordance with the direction in which the sprocket wheels and chains are moved by the operator.
23 designates a foot lever or treadle fixedly associated with the lower pair of sprocket .wheels 21 and affording a positive means for turning said Wheels in one direction.
24 designates a spring associated with the foot lever 23 and adapted to impart a rising vmovement to the foot lever when the foot of the operator is removed therefrom.
In the use of the present machine to ma nipulate the axle spring of the ordinary segmental leaf type shown in dotted lines in 8, or the centrally dished segmental leaf typeishown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,
and commonly known as the Ford spring, the said spring will be arranged in the spring holders 6, said holders having been previously positioned on the table or bench 2.
The compression head or platen 12 is then moved down by the action of the foot lever 28, bringing a spring engaging jaw or arm 14: into forcible contact with the middle portion of the spring operated on, to effect a compression of the leaves of the spring, and withthe yoke or annular shaped ends 17 of said jaw straddling or encircling the nut or I the valve springs of a multiple cylinder automobile engine, the said engine or the head carrying the valves of the engine, is.
- positioned in the table or bench 2, the same having been previously adjusted on the a -:main frame 1, so that the upper ends of the valve springs will be in proper engaging position with the compression jaw 14;, as shown in Fig. 3. The head or platen carrying said jaw 14;, or a plurality of the same, is-then moved down by the action of thefoot lever 23 bringing the spring engaging jaw or j aws, 14 in contact with thetop bearing washer or collar of the valve spring or springs to effect a proper compression of said spring or springs, with a forked end 7 17 of each jaw straddling the guide rod of a valve spring-and with the confining crosspin by which a washer or collar aforesaid is held in place in an exposed condition adapted for ready removal and replacement as required. In the above descrlbed use of the present machine it is preferable to employ a plurality of compression jaws 141 corresponding in number with the number of cylinders of the engine operated on, with a view'to rapidity and economy of operation.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a spring compression machine, a main frame, a work table on said frame, a movable compression head guided in the main frame, a horizontal compressor jaw attached to said head in superimposed relation to the work table, a foot lever, and operative connections between said lever and said compressor head.
2. In a spring compression machine, a main frame, a work table on said frame, a movable compressor head guided in the main frame, a horizontal compressor jaw attached to said head in superimposed relation to the work table, a foot lever, and operative con-- nections between said lever and said compressor head, the same comprising upper and lower wheels revolubly mounted on the main frame, and operatively connected to the foot lever, and an endless chain connection carried by said wheels and operatively connected to said compressor head.
3. In a spring compression machine, a main frame, a work table on said frame, a movable compressor head guided in the main frame, a horizontal compressor jaw attached to said head in superimposed relation to the work table and having a forked engagingend, a foot lever, and operative connections between said lever and said compressor head.
4. In a spring compression machine, a main frame, a work table on said frame, a movable compressor head guided in the main frame, a horizontal compressor jaw attached to said head in superimposed relation to the work table, spring holders removably connected to the work table, a foot lever, and operative connections between said lever and said compressor head.
5. In a spring compression ,machine, a main frame, a work table secured in a vertically adjustable manner to the front of said frame, a movable compressor head guided in the main frame, a horizontal compressor jaw attached to said head'in superimposed relationto the work table, a foot lever, and operative connections betweensaid lever and the compressor head.
6. In a spring compression machine, a main frame, a work table on saidframe, a movable compressor head guided in the main frame and having a horizontally disposed carrying shank in superimposed relation to the work table, a spring engaging jaw having a socketat one end for engagement with the aforesaid carrying shankand having at the other end a yoke extension, a foot lever, and operative connections between said lever and said compressor head.
