Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11119, 28 1921.
Application filed April 28, 1917, Serial No. 165,096. Renewed December 2, 1920. Serial No. 427,799.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. Goss, a cit zen of the United States, residing at Chlcago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Device for- Cooling Liquids, of which the following is a specification.
An object of my invention is to provide a device for cooling liquids which is readily adapted to be placed in an ice-box or refrigerator.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character which also serves as a means for holding the ice or other cooling medium.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device for cooling liquids which exposes a large surface in close contact with the cooling medium.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character, the inside of which may be easily cleaned and kept in a sanitary condition.
The manner in which these and other objects are accomplished may be seen by reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a top side elevation of my invention.
Fig. 2 is aperspective view with the top plate or cover removed.
Fig. 3 shows the detailed construction of the drain pipe.
Fig. 4 is a section through A--A of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a section through B B of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modification with the end cut away.
Fig. 7 is a detail of the manner of fastenmg the top plate.
eferring to Fig. 1, my invention consists of a box, 1, preferably made in one piece of metal, with shoulders, 3, to which the top piece, 2, is fastened by means of bolts, 4, 4. This top piece holds the ice or other cooling medium and is provided with grooves 16, 16, which facilitate thedrainage of the wa ter formed, to the drain pipe 6, which is screwed into the top piece at the thickened center, 5. The liquid to be cooled enters through the pipe, 11, passes through the box,
is cooled, and leaves by the pipe, 12.
In Fig. 3 is shown the method of connecting the drain pipe 6.v The pipe is first screwed into the threaded portion 5 of the top piece 2, the gasket 8 of rubber or other materlal is. placed over the pipe, then the metal washer 9 and the lock nut 10 is screwed down, making a tight joint between the pipe and the bottom of the device.
Fig. 7 shows a detail of the method of fastening the top piece 2. The gasket 17, of rubber or other pliable material is placed entirely around the box on the shoulder, 3,
the piece 2 is placed on top and fastened wit bolts 4, 4, thus making a water tight ]O1I1 In order to provide more cooling area over which the liquid is forced to pass, the box 1 may be made with baflle plates, 14, 14, shown in Fig. 6, and having holes, 15, 15, at alternate ends thus making the liquid travel through a longer distance from the inlet to the outlet.
From the foregoing description, it is read- 11y. seen that my invention is adapted to be placed in an ice-box or refrigerator, in place of the ordinary shelf. The interior of my invention is readily accessible for cleaning,
2 being then lifted off.
Other devices used for this purpose are of such a shape and construction as to make thorough cleaning impossible or very difficult. Another advantage over other types is the fact that my invention serves as a shelf for the ice which presses down with its full weight upon the top thus bringing every part into close contact and giving a maximum cooling effect.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A device for cooling liquids comprising a container having shoulders, a top supported on said shoulders and removably fastened thereto with bolts, and adapted to hold ice, a drain pipe extending through the container and connected with said top, grooves in said top leading to said pipe and pipes connected with said container to allow the liquid to enter and leave, substantially as described.
NELLIE CLINNIN, MAROEL E. SAELENS.
