Be it known that I, HAnoLo D. WATER- HOUSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wollaston city of Quincy, county of Norfolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement 1n Tgnition Apparatus, of which the following description, in connection with the'accompanying drawings, is a specification, l ke characters on the drawings representing hke arts. p This invention relates to improvement in ignition apparatus for internal combustlon -eng1nes, and more particularly, though not.

In the drawings I haveelected to show a preferred form of one embodiment of my mvention as applied to a Ford motor car.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of a motor supplied with a preferred form of distributer' constituting one embodiment of my invention Fig. 2-is a horizontal section, partly in plan, through the distributor shown in ig. 3 is a vertical transverse section,
partly in elevation, on the line of though not necessarily, applied directly tothe cam shaft 6 of the car, in the same gen eral position as that. occupied by the commutator of the Ford'car. The amount of space between the time gear covercastin 7 and the fan 8 of the car is relatively slig t, and the distributer must be of peculiarly compact construction to avoid interference with the fan, while providing a sufiiciently long bearing to' be durable.
In the preferred form of my invention I have provided a sleeve 8 preferably secured to the shaft 6 by a pin 9, and carrying a distributer ring 10 mounted on any suitable interposed non-conductive rotating element 11, which also carries the distributer sector.

The timing shaft 6, which is of course a half time shaft, the sleeve v8, distributer ring 10, distributer sector 12, the cam portions 14 and the nut 16 are, therefore, all locked together for joint rotation.
.I will now describe those portions of the distributer whichdo not rotate with the cam shaft 6. The housing for the distributer may comprisea casing 18 of any suitable non-conductive material, and preferably carries an electric connection 19, herein shown as a screw having its end adjacent the distributer ringlO for supplying current thereto, and a plurality of connections 20, 21, 22 and 23 for successively receiving the current from the distributer sector 12,'th0se connections being respectively connected to the spark plugs 24, 25,26 and 27 of the internal combustion engine. The casing 18 is preferably attached to the casting 7 in any suitable way, and is preferably provided with a bearing sleeve 28 engaging the exterior surface of the sleeve 8 through a considerable portion of-its length. The sleeve 28 is preferably slotted at 29 to receive the cam-engaging element 30, which is preferably carried bya breaker-arm spring 31 attached to the breaker-casing'32, which is preferably mounted for limited rotative movement about the sleeve 28. The cam-engaging element 30 controls the make and break of the primary circuit between the point 33 carried by the breaker-arm spring 31 and the stationary oint 34. 'Ihe secondary circuit may be assumed to start from the motor (ground) at 48, passing through the secondary wiring 49, and secondary coil 50 to the connec tion 19 (Fig. 2), from which the current jumps to the distributer ring 10, which is connected with the distributer sector 12, from which the secondary current again jumps successively to the points 20, 21, 23-
and 22, connected to the spark plugs, of each of which one point is of course grounded on the engine, thus completing the circuit.
While I have shown and described a preferred form of one embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that major changes involvingomission, substitution, alteration and reversal of parts, and even changes in the mode of operation, may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, which is best defined in the following claims.
Claims-- 4 1. In an internal combustion engine having a valve shaft, a nut, distributing means including a sleeve secured to the end of the valve shaft and counterbored interiorly to receive said nut engaging the threads on the end of said valve shaft, a second sleevesur rounding said first-named sleeve and removable therefrom over said nut while the latter remains in threaded relation to 'the shaft.
2. In an internal combustion engine having a valve shaft, a sleeve surrounding the end of the valve shaft and carrying a distributer ring and distributer sector, said sleeve being slotted completely throu h in places to provide a plurality of cam sur aces.

In an internal combustion engine having a valve shaft, distributing means comprising a sleeve secured to the end of the valve shaft and a cam rotatable with said valve shaft, a non-rotating sleeve surrounding the first-named sleeve carried thereby and having an extended bearing on the surface thereof and circuit making and breaking means carried by said second sleeve and mounted for limited movement thereon for advancement or retardation of the ignition.
5. In an internal combustion engine, a distributing device comprising, in combination, a sleeve for engagement with the end of a half-time shaft, said sleeve having slots providing cam surfaces, a second sleeve surrounding the first-named sleeve, and carrying means cooperating with said cam surfaces for making and breaking the circuit.
6. In an internal combustion engine, a distributing device comprising, in combination, a sleeve for engagement with the end of a half-time shaft, said sleeve having slots providing cam surfaces and presentin an annular exterior bearing surface on 0th sides of said slots, a second sleeve surrounding the first-named sleeve, and carrying means cooperating with said cam surfaces for making and breaking the circuit.
7 In an internal combustion engine, a distributing device comprising a cam carried by a half-time shaft, a cooperating make and break member, a breaker casing for said make and break member and a removable cover carrying a cooperating point for said make and break member, said cover being removable from said casing without disturbing the relation of said breaker and its cam.
8. distributing device comprising a shaft, a nut threaded to the end of said shaft and providmg a round exterior portion, a sleeve secured to said shaft and extending over said nut,

In an internal combustion engine, a distributor device comprisinga rotary shaft, a distributer cam fixed relative to said shaft and rotatable therewith, a distributer casing said shaft extending through both ends of said casing, a breaker point and means for moving said breaker point to advance or retard the spark while leaving said dis- .tain said breaker
