Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 19, 1921.
Application filed August 9, 1917. Serial No. 185,242.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUcUsTE MAIRE, citizen of the Republic of France, residing at Route de Bezons, Argenteuil, Seine and Oise, in the Republic of France, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ignition Apparatus for Aviation-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
For the purpose of assuring greater security in the operation of aviation engines, it is an advantage to assure ignition in each cylinder by the provision of two completely independent sparking plugs, which provision however necessitates providing two separate apparatus for effecting the ignition.
The present invention has now for its object to provide an improved apparatus that will allow of applying that arrangement to engines having more than six cylinders, with magnetos of any desired type.
The improved apparatus is characterized by the use of magnetos without a distributor having a suitable speed ratio according to the type of mageto, the igniting current generated by these magnetos being led to distributers mounted on the supports for the cam shafts, the carbon-brush holder being actuated by the cam shaft.
The accompanying drawing illustrates by way of example the application of an improved apparatus according to this invention to an aviation engine.
The improved apparatus comprises two magnetos of any type driven by the engine and giving two or four sparks at each revolution. It is to be understood of course that the ratio between the speed of the armature and the speed of the engine main shaft will dependon the characteristics of the magneto. If the secondary circuit of each magneto is connected to a distributer B mounted on the cam shaft, this arrangement will provlde a complete ignition apparatus comprisng two magnetos and two distributers formmg two circuits that are absolutely independent of each other for the ignition of the engine.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to. secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In ignition apparatus for aviation engines having a plurality of cylinders and a plurality of spark plugs in each cylinder, the combination with a plurality of magnetos driven from the crank shaft of the engine, of a plurality of distributers each adapted to be operated by a different cam shaft of the engine, an electrical connection from each magneto to its corresponding distributer, .and an electrical connection from each distributer to one of the spark plugs in each cylinder, whereby a plurality of independent current supply means is provided for the several spark plugs of each cylinder.
2. In an ignition apparatus for internal combustion engines, in combination, two magnetos, means for driving said magnetos, a plurality of cam shafts, a distributer for each magneto and operated by one of the cam shafts, an electric connection between a magneto and a distributor, two spark plugs in each cylinder of the motor, and an electric connection between each distributer and one of the spark plugs of each cylinder, whereby if one system of ignition should fail to operate the other will operate.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' AUGUSTE MAIRE. Witnesses:
LOUIS Moses,
Cues. P. PRESSLY.
