To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HARTLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sprinkler- Heads for Automatic Sprinkling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to sprinkler devices and has for an object to provide a sprinkler head for releasing a valve by the action of heat, thereby effecting the operation of the sprinkler system.
Among other features the invention comprehends a device of a simple nature and which is adapted for direct connection with the service pipes of the sprinkler system which serves, to hold a valve normally in closed position to prevent the exit of the water, a fusible link being provided for this purpose, which latter when fused by the action of heat, is adapted to release the valve to initiate the supply of water, suitable means being provided for bringing about a spraying action of the water so that it will spread over the immediate adjoining territory to extinguish the fire whose heat has brought about the fusing of the link.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which,-

Fig. 3- is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, the numeral 10 indicates the main water supply or service pipe of the sprinkler system and on to which is threaded a tubular stem or shank 11 of a substantially rectangular frame 12. A continuation of the stem or shank 11 forms a tubular extension 13 provided with a valve seat 14 for a ground glass valve 15. The ground glass valve 15 is held in the lower end of the fusible link element 16 which is normally soldered, brazed or otherwise secured to another link element 17 both of which form the fusible link 18. wheel-shaped as shown, with the link element 17 formed with a depressed hub 19, providing a recess 20 for an expansible spring 21 interposed between the link elements 16, 17 and the link element 17 furthermore has its upper end terminating in a stem 22 having a conical head 23 which extends upwardly in the frame 12 to be engaged with the lower end of a set screw 24, serving to hold the link element in position and normally retain the valve 15 in engage ment with its valve seat 14 to hold the water in the pipe 10 in check.
A petal-shaped spreader 25 is arranged against the underside of the upper portion of the frame 12 with a plurality of opposed slots 26 of the spreader adapted to receive the side arms or upright portions 27 of the frame, holding the spreader in position, the spreader furthermore having a central opening 28 through which passes the conical head 23 of the stem 22 of the link element 17.-
When the parts are in the position shown in the views, it will be apparent that the valve 15 will be retained upon its valve seat 14, thus closing the exit of the tubular extension 13 communicating with the water supply pipe through the medium of the shank 11. Now when a fire occurs, the immediate heat generated, will fuse the link 18, enabling the spring 21 to act and spread the two link elements 16, 17 apart whereby the link element 17 will fall away from the frame and the link element 16 will also be forced away by the action of the out-rushing water, displacing the valve. As the water spouts up through the extension 13, it strikes the spreader 25 and is spread out in a spray form to extinguish the flames or fire around the sprinkler head of this part of the system.
It will of course be understood that a large number of the sprinkler heads are employed in each system and from the foregoing description it will be seen that the device described is of a simple construction; consists of few parts that cannot readily get out of order and can be cheaply manufactured to accomplish the desired result.
Having described my invention, I claim A sprinkler head comprising a frame providing a coupling for connection with a water supply pipe, a valve seat on the frame, a wheel-shaped fusible link disposed in the frame, said link consisting of a plurality of link elements and a spring interposed therebetween With said link elements normally held against relative disengagement, a valve on one of the link elements and normally 5 seated on the valve seat, a stem 0n the other link'element, a screw on the frame and adapted to engage the stem of the link to frame and held-therein Tin-superposition to 10 said valve seat.
