Be it known that l, WILLIAM N. J OHN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county 4of Milwaukee and State of `Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Tapping-Chucks; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a' full', clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates -to new and useful improvements in reversibleA chuck devices adapted for-association with the drive spindle 'of a drill press er similar mechanism for performing thread cutting and. like operations, my device being more particularly of that type wherein the tool is automatically reversed upon drawing it from the hole.
It is more particularly an object of my invention to provide an exceedingly compact gear arrangement whereby al maximum reduction of speed may be procured in reversing the direction of rotation' of the tool member.
It is further my object to provide a gripping arrangement for the tap or other tool member employed which permits a full float action of the tool to adapt itself to the hole to be tapped or threaded, and wherein the element of wear is reduced to a minimum.
A still further object resides in the provision of an improved arrangement for procuring a positive dischar e of oil or other lubricating fluid against t e tool in its cuttin action.
ith the above and other vantages in view, which the deseription proceeds, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more particularly described and defined by the appended claims.

The lower ends of the tions-are connected by a ring 17 lthreaded on sleeve extensions 18 thereof, and a bearing sleeve 19 is mounted `in said sleeve exten-- sions and receives a shaft 20 which extends through the casing and is slidable in the hub 14. This shaft 20 carries suitable tool gripping means, as will be later specically described. A gear 21 is loosely mounted on the shaft 20 in the lower portion of the casing and this gear meshes with idler gears 22 carried by the lower portion of stub shafts 23 mounted in inward bearing extensions 24 on the wall of the casing, the upper ends of said shafts 23 carrying gears 25 meshing with the internal gear 15 wherebyto provide a drive connection between the upper member 14 and the loose gear 21. A clutch member 26 is mounted on the shaft 20 between the lloose gear and hub member and is selectively engageable with clutch portions formed on the members.
Thus, when the shaft 2O wardly as will' is shifted in.- occur when a tool carried thereby is pressed against its work, adirect drive will be afforded from.. the hub mem'- ber to the shaft 20and when the shaft member- 20 is shiftedoutwardly, a reverse drive at a greatly increased speed will be procured through the internal gear 15, gears 22 and loose gear 21 to thus procure withdrawal of the tool from the-Work at a rapid speed. The gear casingis held from rotation by an arm 27 carried on a bolt 28 threaded on the side-of the casing, said arm being adapted'to engage the frame of the drill press or other structure with which my device is associated.
A cylindrical tool receiving head 28 is formed on the lower end of the shaft 20 and mating casing secv shank, a set gaged on all` four/sides is provided with a transverse slot there through in which is loosely mounted upper and lower blocks 29 and 30 respectively, the lower blochbeing provided with. a depending portion which extends through the bottom of the head. 'i he upper bloch is provided with a squared recess 3l' for receiving the usual squared upper end of the shankof a tap t or similar tool member, while the lower bloclr 30 is provided with a passage for receivingv the rounded 'portion of the screw 32 being threaded in the bloclr. 30 to bind the shank therein.' What is claimed is:
1. A chu'clr device of the class described comprising a gear casing including a pair of mating sections .forming a cup shaped threaded on the mouth' portions of said sections, bea-ring extensions at the bottoms of said sections, means secur-y ing said extensions together, a bearing sleeve .in said extensions, a tool carrying shaft slidable in said sleeve, an internal gear having its hub portion'journaled in said cap member, means for driving said internal gear, a counter shaft journaled in the casing, a gear loose on said slidable shaft, pinions on thecounter-shaft meshing with said loose gear and the lnternal gear, a clutch member on the slid-able shaft between the gears,.
