SHIPPING-CRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 14 192 Application filed June 15, 1920. Serial No. 389,170.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that l, LOUIS H. I'IOCKSPEIER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Hampton, in the county of Chickasaw and State of Iowa, have invented anew and useful Shipping-Crate, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to shipping crates, and more particularly to shipping crates of the foldable type, whereby the side walls of the crate may be moved into engagement with each other to provide a small and compact article, to facilitate the shipment thereof.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a crate of this character which will be especially adapted for shipping sewing machines, graphophones or the like, the crate being of a construction to be readily and easily moved to its extended position.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for hingedly connecting the sections so that the sections may be locked against unauthorized persons moving the same in an attempt to remove the article being shipped.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 illustrates a side elevational view of a crate constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates an end elevational view of the same.
Fig. 3 illustrates an end elevational view of the opposite end of the crate.
Fig. 4 illustrates a plan view of the crate.
Fig. 5 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 6 is a fragmental detail view of the means for securing one end of the crate to the ends of the side sections.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the crate forming the subject matter of the present invention includes a pair of side walls indicated generally by the reference characters 5 and 6 respectively, each of which sections includes top and bottom rails 7 and 8, end bars 9 and 10, cross bars 11, and a diagonally disposed bracing bar 12, the bars having their ends connected to the end bars 9 and 10, inv any suitable manner.
The crate also includes the end walls indicated generally by the reference characters 13 and 14:, each of which end walls comprises upper bars 15, lower bars 16 and side bars 17, the side bars being connected by the diagonally disposed bars 18, and as shown, the diagonally disposed bar 18 of one end wall lies in a plane opposite to the plane of the diagonally disposed bar 18 of the opposite end wall, the ends of the diagonally disposed bars 18 being mortised in the side bars 17 in. a manner to prevent movement thereof, with relation to the sidebars.
Each of the end walls is also provided with an inwardly extending frame indicated by the reference character 19, which frames are of sizes to it within. the end of the crate proper to provide shoulders for contacting with the side walls of the crate for maintaining the side walls in proper spaced relation with each other.
The end wall 13 fits within one end of the crate, and is provided with the eyes 20 adapted to receive the heel: portions of the hook members 21, which are carried by the side walls of the crate, by means of the screw eyes 22, a hasp being however, secured to this end wall 18, as at 23, so that the portion 24 thereof, will overlie the staple 25, so that the end wall 13 may be securely locked to the side walls of the crate.
Disposed adjacent to the lower end of the end wall 13 are the screw eyes 26 adapted to accommodate the hook members 27 carried by the side walls, wherebythe lower end of the end wall 13 is secured against displace ment. 1
The end wall 14: ishingedly connected to one of the side walls of the crate as by means of the hinges 28, there being provided openings disposed adjacent to the opposite edge of the end wall 14, which openings receive the bolts 29, which bolts 29 accommodate the nuts 30 on the threaded extremities thereof for securing this edge of the end wall 14 to the crate.
These bolts 29 are also provided with the nuts 31 for securing the bolts to the side walls of the crate in a manner to prevent displacement thereof, during shipment, the nuts 31 being designed to seat themselves in the cut out portions 32 of the end wall 14:.
Formed in the lower bars of each of the side Walls, adjacent to the ends thereof, are the cut out portions 33, the cut out portions of one side wall being disposed opposite to the cut out portions formed in the opposite side Wall, so that the ribs carried by the removable bottom 35, may seat therein in a manner to prevent movement of the bottom with relation to the crate.
in order that the upper portions of the end walls will be secured in proper spaced relation With each other, a bar 36 is provided, which bar has extensions 37 formed at the ends thereof, which extensions are con structed to fit Within the out out portions 38 formed in the end Walls 13 and 14.
li rom the foregoing it is obvious that the hasp 2% may be locked, by means of an ordinary padlock, and that by removing the nuts 30 and the hook members 27, the sections of the box may be folded to closely engage each other, forming a compact receptacle for return shipment.
/Vhat is claimed as. new is 1. Ina folding crate side Walls and. end WflllS; each of the end Walls having an in- Wardly extending frame contacting With the Wall thereto, and a removable end Wall disposed within the opposite end of the crate.
2. In a folding crate, slde Wells and end walls, one of said end'walls being hingedly' connected to one of the side Walls, means for securing the end Wall to the opposite side Walls, a removable end Wall disposed between the side walls, each of the end Walls having a cut out portion, a bar having extensions formed on the ends thereof, and said extensions adapted to be positioned Within the cut out portions of the end Walls for embracing the upper portions of the end Walls.
