AUTOMOBLE-HOOD.
Patented inne i4, 192i.
.application filed July 9, 1920. Serial No. 395,4M57.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, CHRIST T. CHRISTIAN- soN, (a Norwegian, who have declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States) at present residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Anne Arundel andState of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Hoods, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention has for its object to provide an automobile hood or cover with a simple and inexpensive means that is readily adj ustable from the drivers seat for admitting air around the engine and other parts of the operating mechanism, for cooling purposes, and my said invention comprises a peculiar arrangement of shutter device coperative with an air slot or passage in the hood side and in which is included a simple and effective means for holding the said shutter device rigid and against rattling, when shifted to any of the adjustments, partially or wholly opened to the air.
Vfith other objects in view that will be hereinafter further explained, my invention consists in the peculiar construction and novel arrangement of the pai-ts outlined in the following detailed description, specifically pointed out in the appended claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a. perspective view of so much of the hood end of an automobile as is necessary to illustrate a practical application of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of a hinged hood member and a portion ofthe vehicle dash, with my improvements applied, the shutter device and the control therefor being shown at the closed position in full lines and at an open position in dotted lines.
Fig. 3 is an inside face view of a hinged hood member with the shutter and the shutter control devices thereon.
Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal section,
taken substantially on the line 4 4 on F ig.L
2, of the shifting or pull device on the dash and its connection with the shutter control member hereinafter specifically referred to.
Referring 'to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals indicate like parts in all of the figures, l designates a portion of a hood of a conventional type of motor vehicle and 2 designates one of the hinged sides thereof.
ln the practical application of my invenv tion, my improvements are applied to a side hood section of the conventional shape and size with the usual hinge loops 20 along the upper edge, whereby, when desired', my hood side with the improvements thereon may b'e readily substituted for an old hinge hood side by simply withdrawing the usual hinge pintle or rod to permit of removing the old side and retaining the said pintle, when my improved hinge member 2 is substituted therefor, it being understood that my new hood member in practice is equipped with lock Alugs 2l 2l for coperating with the usual hold down devices 22 22, as indicated on Fig. l.
In the development of my invention, the hood member 2 is formed with anl elongated horizontal opening 23 that extends a length, more or less, that of the distant space that takes in the nsual series of air slots in the regular form of hood side.
In my arrangement, fixed shutter plates 24-24 are riveted to the inside of the hood member to extend a short distance over the opening 23 therein at each end thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, the said plates 24- 24 constituting thesolid abutments for the end ones 30 30 of a, series of shutter blades 3, in practice of sheet metal, and adapted for folding iiatwise upon themselves to constitute a complete closure for the opening 23, when shifted 'to 'the position shown in full lines on Fig. 2.
4 4 designate angle plates that extend along the upper and lower edges of the opening 23 and rivet thereto, as is best shown in Fig. 3, by reference to which it will also be seen each shutter blade 3 has a pintle 3l at the upper and lower ends for engaging hinge apertures lO-40 in the angle plates 4 4.
To provide for readily working all of the shutter blades in unison, each of the said blades has an inwardly extended horizontal crank-like member 5 and the said members 5 5 are pivotally joined to lateral apertured lugs on a control lever G, one end of which is yieldingly connected, by a tension spring T, to a fixed lng on the inside of the forward end of the hinge hood member 2.
integral with a sleeve-like'liead 9 shaped for The other or innermost end of the lever 6 being readily and xedly held in an aperture made in the dash and provided, along its loWer edge, With a series of ratchet or lock teeth 82 for cooperating with *the lower ratchet edge 92 of the pull lever 8, as is best-` shown in ig. 4.
F rom the foregolng description taken 1n connection with the drawlngs, the complete construction, the manner of its use and the.
advantages of my invention will be readily understood by thos'e familiar Withthe use of device-s of this kind.
It will be observed from the drawings that by connecting the control lever 6 through a crank portion 60 with a crank member 8O on the pull handle 8, as shown, a simple and yet effective means for connecting the control lever with the actuating handle is provided that allows for quickly fitting the parts and manine 8 in a substantially rigid relation and againstl rattling, when the automobile is in motion.
lfVhat I claim is: In an air control for automobile hoods, a hood member having an elongated air passage, a series of shutter blades pivotally mounted on the inside of the hood cross- Wise of the opening therein and to fold flatwise upon one another, a control lever to which all of the blades are individually pivoted, the said control lever including an inwardly projected angle member; in combination with means for adjusting the shutter blades to their partially or wholly closed positions, the said means comprising ahorizontal bearingr plate having a sleeve-like head portion adapted for being fitted through the vehicle dash and having ratchet teeth, and a pull lever slidably mounted on the bearing plate to Work through the sleevelike head thereof, the said lever including a crank-like member with which the angle member on the control lever slidably interlocks, the said pull lever having a ratcheted edge for interlockably engaging the ratchet teeth on the bearing member whereby to lock the control lever to the adjusted positions.
