STAMPING-MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY W. WINTER, a citizen of the United States, residm at Methuen, in the county of Essex and tate of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Stampi -Mach1nes, of which the following descrlption, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts 1n the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for marking, stamping or embossing sheet -material, such for example, as parts of boots and shoes.
Metallic stamping medium such as gold leaf, is supplied for stamping purposes 1n the form of a long strip with a paper backing wound into a-coil. An object of the present invention is to provide improved mechanism for automatically supplymg such stamping medium in strip form so that the stamping machine may be operated wlthout requiring the operator to do more than present the work in stamping pos tion.
Features of the invention consist in improved guiding means whereby the strip may be conducted to and away from a movable die, and improved feedlng means which may be so regulated as to supply in accurate measure the amount of stampingmedium required by the die in use.
As herein shown a heated die is employed and means are provided for guiding the stamping strip into sufficiently close proximity to the d1e to insure its proper location at the moment when the die is pressed upon the work, while at the same time maintaining the strip between the stamping opera-. tions sufficiently remote from the die to prevent overheating of the strip.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodimentthereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the entire machine;

The head 9 is reciprocated vertically by a lever 28 journaled upon a cross shaft 30 in the machine frame and operated through a vertical link 32 from a cam 35. The cam 35 is fast upon a cam shaft 38 and has a cam groove 36 in which runs a roller 34 on the link 32. The mechanism above described is similar to that disclosed in my prior application Serial No. 870,700, filed November 6, 1914, and forms no part of the present invention.
A removable die block 10 is mounted in ways formed in the die carriage. The die block is bored laterally to receive an electric heating unit 12 and provided on its lower face with an undercut recess to receive the die 14. One side of the recess is formed by a slidable plate 16 which is normally pressed into engagement with the undercut portion of the die by a spring 18 which is mounted on the die block and acts at its lower end against the rear side of the plate 16. The die block is provided with an opening extending from front to rear and through this opening extend a pair of sheet metal shields 20 and 22. The shields 20 and 22 are secured to the rear side of the die block 10 and extend forward through the opening and then downwardly over the front side of the die block. At their lower edges the shields 20 and 22 are brought together and secured to an intermediate sheet of asbestos 24. The shields are of light spring metal and are spaced from the die block so as to be kept cool by the interposed air spaces. 1. A stomping machine having, in c0mbinetion, a, movable die having strip guiding means, a supply reel and a feed rollet" rotatable about fixed axes located at one side of the path of the die, whereby a. strip of stomping medium may be looped about the die between the reel end'fced roll strip from the reel to the feed roll about the die and out of contact therewith.
3. A stamping machine, having, in combination, a reciprocatory die carrier having a stamping die and a recess formed about the die, and means for guiding a strip of stamping medium through the recess and across the face of the die.
4. A stamping machine having, in combination, a reciprocatory ie carrier having a stamping die and an o ening disposed substantially parallel to t e 'face of the die, strip guiding means, and means for feeding a strip of stamping medium through the opening and past the face of the die.
5. A stamping machine having, in combination, a reciprocatory die carrier havin a stamping die, and means movable wit the carrier for guiding a strip of stamping medium in a loop about the die and normally out of contact with the die.
6. A stamping machine, having, in combination a reciprocatory die carrier having a spaced end portion, means for heating said end portion, and means 'for guiding a strip of stampingmedium in a loop about said end portion.
7. A stamping machine having, in combination, a reciprocatory die carrier havin a spaced end portion, means for heating said on portion, and guiding means extending into the space for guiding a strip of stam ing medium about said end portion whi e f name to this specification.
