Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented June 14, 1921.
Application iled July 28, 1920. Serial No. 399,505.
To aZZ 'who/m. t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. STALEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew and the State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gear- Pullers, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention is to assist in the removal of gears or other detachable mechanism on shafts where the t is close and the parts are not readily accessible, and the object is to avoid prying and hammering usually resorted to often to the injury of the parts to be removed and to the accompanying mechanism as well, and to provide a powerful screw-means with grappling hooks that can be easily applied and that will retain a hold once acquired until intentionally released.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shaft with gear wheels thereon under process of remoyal by the use of my inventionV which is here shown in operative position. Fig. 2, is a view in side elevation of my invention removed from the work to be done. Fig. 3, is an elevation in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, with the j aw-clamp removed, and Fig. 4 is an edge vi'ew of the clamp detached from the rest of the device.
Like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing, the head 5 is slotted at its two ends and provided with transverse holes. Jaw- bars 6, 6, terminate at one end of each with a hook 7, and at the opposite ends they have transverse holes through which hinge-pins or bolts 8, 8, are passed to swingingly retain the jaw-bars the ends of which are respectively inserted in the slots in head 5, in the manner shown in the drawing. The jaw-bars are turned with their hooks toward each other, and are adapted to reach across a gear-wheel or other object to be pulled and engage the opposite sides of the object with the hooks. Then the object is pulled toward the head 5 by suitable means, here shown as a screwbolt 9, the threaded body of which passes through and engages a threaded hole in the head, and bears against the end of the shaft on which the object is mounted, or other body-portion from which the object is to be taken.
In order to insure that the jaw-bars will not slip oftl of the object to be pulled, I provide a clamp-bar 10, having end-hooks 11 and 12, respectively, to receive the two jaw-bars. Within the hook 11, is a lug 13,'
to enter detents 14; in the outer edge of its jaw-bar, and the opposite jaw-bar has corresponding detents 14, in its outer edge to receive the pointed end of a set-screw 15, which screws through a threaded hole in the hook 12. The body-portion 16 of the clamp-bar is bent and bowed outwardly or away from the plane of the screw-bolt 9 so as to alford ample clearance therefor or for such portions of the object being pulled or its support as are frequently encountered. The opposite side of the clamp from the body-portion 16, is purposely left open for the free and expeditious placing and removal of the puller.
The outer end of the screw-bolt 9, may be inished with a hexagonal head for the application of a wrench in turning it as here shown, or it may be provided with any of the usual and suitable means for working the screw in and out.
The operation of my device is fully illustrated in Fig. 1, in which 2O is a shaft from which the gear wheels 21 are being pulled. The jaw-bars engage the gear wheel between them; they are retained there by the clamp-bar 10, and the wheels are being pulled by turning screw-bolt 9, the inner end of which is against the end of shaft 20.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
