rail drills, and is an improvement upon the rail drill for which Reissue Letters Patent Number'14,196, were granted to me on September 26, 1916.
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and to adapt the rail drill for work upon electric railroads without interruption of the electric current, especially that used for operating signals.
In accordance with the invention and to meet certain conditions, but two drill shafts are employed and these are arranged lin Y alinement and project in opposite directions,
permitting double bonding with only one drill hole in the web of each rail. Improved thrust bearings for each shaft are provided, whereby the thrust block or collar on the shaft is lodged between ball bearings. Furthermore, means are provided whereby the clamp bars for engaging the rails to back up the drills are carried through side bars serving to support them.
In order to prevent short circuiting signal currents when it becomes necessary to repair the tracks, as when replacing rails and subsequently boring them, the two ends of the rail-drilling machine are insulated one from the other so that the current may remain in the track without liability of unintentionally working the signals.
The invention will be best '1 understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modiications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

The shaft 61 has fast to it by a pin 70 or otherwise a block 71 capable of rotating within the sleeve, and betweeneach end' of the block 71 and the corresponding plate 67 01'68, are ball bearings 72. This structure permits the shaft even under the thrust of drilling to rotateV with the greatest ease and offer little resistance tok such rotation.
The plate 68 has an arm 73 projecting from oneside thereof, this arm being upright in the installed position and carried by another arm 74 depending from a collar 75 carrying and forming the journal bearing for a shaft 76 having rollers 77 at the ends traveling on the webs 10.
Depending from the main beams 1 and 2 are brackets 78 to which are pivoted the lower ends of upright hand levers 79 having hand latches 80 at their upper ends arranged to move over the opposite edges of a platform 81. The latter is erected on posts 82 which rise from appropriate parts .of the main frame and it overrides the engine 52. The arrangement is such that the levers 79 and the handle 35 are within easy reach of an operator controlling the engine 52. Each lever 79 is connected by a link 83 to a corresponding one of the thrust bearings 65 so that either or both drills 64 may be advanced to the work or withdrawn therefrom at the will of the operator.
The shaft 26 has its electrical continuity broken by insulation 84 and the two ends of the shaft are joined by a sleeve 85, so that the mechanical continuity of the shaft is intact.
In order-to avoid any possibility of stray currents reaching the engine and so causing charges therein to explode out of time., the engine is insulated, as shown at 86 from the main frame and also at Athe pinion 5 4 as shown at 54L in Fig. 1.
The operation of the present machine is similar to that of the patented vmachine and therefore requires. no rparticular description. The height of the drills Awith'respect to the rails may be determined by the adjusting screws 42, limiting the drop of the main frame toward the rails. The feed of each drill with respect to the rails is controlled by the respective lever 79 through the thrust bearing 65 which is supported by the side beams 1 and 2 and travels on the webs 10 thereof through the rollers 77, the friction of the thrust being reduced in both directions of movement by the ball bearings 72 at opposite ends of the block or collar 71.
' Liability of the machine bridging the rails when the rails are charged for signal-purposes is overcome by insulating the two ends of the drilling machinefrom each other and any liability-of stray currents affecting the prime mover is avoided by insulating the vlatter from its'supports on the main frame.
By causing the clamp bars 43 to traverse the end bars 6 thesebars 43 are supported and considerablev mechanism employed'in the structure ofv thel patented machine is avoided. I
What is claimed isrd 1. A drilling machine for rails of tracks, comprising drilling` mechanism, a Y main supporting frame for the drilling mechanism, and end frame members at the ends of the main frame having track-engaging means for carrying, the latter, said end frame members and main frame being constructed of separate elements connected together Vand electrically insulated one from the other at all their points of. connection, the vends of said main .frame where connected with the end frame members being spaced from the :track rails, whereby short circuiting of signal currents is prevented.
2.In'a drilling machine for the rails of tracks, a main vframe comprising beams spaced lengthwise of the track and f Aconnected together, end frame members having track-engaging means, and each formed of a separate piece from the main frame, means for connecting the ends of the beams to the end frame members and insulating the frame members from the beams, said frame members having slots, clamping members for the rails passed through said slots, a rock shaft at each end of the main frame to which the clamping members are connected, means for operating Veach rock shaft, and bearings for said rock shaft fastened to said beams and insulated therefrom.

In a drilling machine for the rails of tracks, a main frame comprising beams spaced apart lengthwiseof the track and connected together, end frame members having channel extremities, each end frame member beingformedof a separate piece from the beams, means yfor connecting the ends ofthe beams to' the endframe members at two points, one connection for each beam being at the end ofthe end frame and the- .other at an intermediate ,point-thereof and both connections being away from the channel extremities, means for insulating the beams from the end yframe membersy at the several points of connection, posts rising from each channel extremity, track beams carrying wheels to run on the track and guided by said posts, and means for raising and lowering said track beams.

In a drilling machine, a main frame comprising side beams of angle construction, end frame members separate from the side beamsl and extending laterallyi beyond lthe sidebeams and there ofychannel-construction, guideposts carried by,` thechannelends of theend `frame `members, -ltrucks traversed and guided by-theguideposts,and adjusting `means carried bythe trucksandichannel portions ofthe end framemembers and connecting the trucks and end framelmembers together, thewadjusting means including manipulating p arts carried by fthe side beams, the side vbeamslbeing electrically insulated from the end frame members and thesaid adjusting means.
